President Biden, Vice President Harris pay tribute to 500,000 lives lost to COVID-19

President Joe Biden called on all Americans to remember the 500,000 lives lost to COVID-19 and to remain vigilant against the virus during remarks and a national moment of silence on Monday. Biden said, “The people we lost were extraordinary. They span generations — born in America, immigrated to America…But just like that, so many of them took their final breath alone in America. I ask all Americans to remember — remember those who were lost and those who were left behind,” the president said. “But as we remember, as we all remember, I also asked us to act, to remain vigilant.”

Biden ordered flags on federal property lowered to half staff for five days as he prepared to lead a moment of communal mourning for those lost to the virus, telling the nation he knows it’s hard but that “to heal, we must remember.”

The COVID-19 death total in the United States had just crossed 400,000 when Biden took the oath of office. An additional 100,000 have died in the past month. The milestone comes just over a year after the first confirmed U.S. fatality from the coronavirus. The pandemic has since swept across the world and the U.S., stressing the nation’s health care system and the economy.

Kenny Chesney releases new single, ‘Knowing You’

Kenny Chesney is releasing his new radio single, “Knowing You,” which appears on his 2020 album, Here & Now

“Knowing You” is reminiscent of some of Chesney’s earlier releases, and the singer said: “It sounds like coming home in a lot of ways. This is the essence of all the music that country is. When you hear this, something inside tingles, because it’s more than production tricks, the guitars, or how hard the drums hit, it’s just so pure… Country at its very best is true, it’s from the heart. ‘Knowing You’ is just that, it’s all heart.”

“Knowing You” was co-written by Brett James,  Adam James and Kat Higgins. You can take a listen at the link here.

Daft Punk announces their split after 28 years

After nearly three decades, Daft Punk is calling it quits. French multi-instrumentalists Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo announced their retirement on Monday morning in an eight-minute video dubbed “Epilogue,” shared on their digital media platforms. Other high-profile collaborations include production on a number of tracks on Kanye West’s critically acclaimed 2013 record “Yeezus,” as well as The Weeknd’s 2016 album “Starboy,” particularly its title track “I Feel It Coming.” Their music has been sampled by a number of popular mainstream artists, including 50 Cent, Nicki Minaj, Will.i.am, Machine Gun Kelly and perhaps most notably in Kanye West’s “Stronger.”

United Airlines grounding Boeing 777 planes after engine explosion over Denver

Federal aviation regulators have ordered United Airlines to step up inspections of all Boeing 777s equipped with the type of engine that suffered a catastrophic failure over Denver on Saturday. The announcement comes a day after United Airlines Flight 328 had to make an emergency landing at Denver International Airport after its right engine blew apart just after takeoff. The plane with 231 passengers and 10 crew on board landed safely, and nobody aboard or on the ground was reported hurt, United said it is temporarily removing those aircrafts from service.

The Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Steve Dickson said in a statement Sunday that based on an initial review of safety data, inspectors “concluded that the inspection interval should be stepped up for the hollow fan blades that are unique to this model of engine, used solely on Boeing 777 airplanes. In a separate statement, The National Transportation Safety Board said that two of the engine’s fan blades were fractured and the remainder of the fan blades “exhibited damage.” The NTSB did caution that it was too early to draw conclusions about how the incident happened.

United said it currently has 24 of the 777s in service, and also said it will work closely with the FAA and the NTSB “to determine any additional steps that are needed to ensure these aircraft meet our rigorous safety standards and can return to service.”
