On 10th anniversary of 'Chief,' Eric Church shares the sentimental story behind the album's name

To commemorate this month’s 10th anniversary of his breakthrough album, Chief, Eric Church is reflecting on the personal meaning behind the title.

Eric reveals that he earned the nickname “chief” while on tour. After frequently losing his contact lenses on stage, the singer started wearing sunglasses instead, accompanied by a hat to stop the sweat from pouring onto his face. Thus, the look on the album’s cover was born.

“We got in bigger venues, I tried to adjust that, but people in the crowds would have on hats and sunglasses and wouldn't let me adjust that, so it just became this thing naturally. So show time, it was my uniform,” he explains. “The band starting joking with me, when I put the hat and sunglasses on, they go all right, it’s Chief time, Chief's here.' But I laughed about it, it was a joke.”

But the nickname that started as a joke has sentimental value. Eric shares the nickname with his grandfather, who was the chief of police in his hometown of Granite Falls, North Carolina.

“My dad called him ‘Chief’ as his son-in-law, so it was very neat to me, that across generations, it became my nickname naturally and nobody knew about it being my grandpa's nickname,” Eric continues. “So when it came time to title the record, because it felt live and because it was something I wanted to show this part of our live show, Chief was the right title from my point of view, but also because of my grandfather and what he meant to me.”

Released in July 2011, Chief features the #1 hits “Springsteen” and “Drink in My Hand.” It also was named Album of the Year at the CMA Awards and ACM Awards.

Mickey Guyton‘s son got the best gift from Carrie Underwood

Mickey recently shared on Twitter that she was elated to open the mail and find a toy piano from Carrie for her five-month-old son. It’s no surprise that Grayson is also a lover of music, as demonstrated by a video that shows him gleefully tapping the piano keys.

“Grayson, you a piano player bubba? Yeah!” his dad and Mickey’s husband, Grant Savoy, cheers on in the background

“I was having a rough day when this showed up in my mailbox. Then I opened it up to see that @carrieunderwood got my baby a piano!” Mickey praised in the caption. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To watch him light up as he plays is the heart explosion I didn't know I needed.”

“Oh, I'm so glad he likes it! Figured it was a good bet that he's musical!!! What a cutie!” Carrie replied

Jimmie Allen also sent Grayson a copy of his new children’s book, My Voice Is a Trumpet. “Thank you @JimmieAllen Gray loves it,” the proud mom wrote alongside a photo of the infant touching the book’s cover.  “Love y'all,” Jimmie responded.

House Speaker Pelosi nominates Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger to join Jan. 6 committee

On Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Ilinois to serve on the select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Pelosi noted Kinzinger’s experience as an Air Force veteran and Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, and said he “brings great patriotism” to the committee after vetoing two of five selections for the committee made by House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy.  Said Pelosi:  “On January 6th, insurrectionists attempted to overthrow the government during the worst assault on the Capitol since the War of 1812. It is imperative that we get to the truth of that day and ensure that such an attack can never again happen. That is why we established the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol, which is bipartisan.”

Kinzinger tweeted that he has accepted Pelosi’s nomination:  “For months, we have searched for answers and what process we should use to get them. For months, lies and conspiracy theories have been spread, threatening our self-governance. For months, I have said that the American people deserve transparency and truth on how and why thousands showed up to attack our democracy, and ultimately, what led to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Complex on January 6, 2021.”

Kinzinger will join Pelosi’s other picks: Republican Rep. Liz Cheney; Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Adam Schiff, Pete Aguilar, Stephanie Murphy, Jamie Raskin, Elaine Luria, and Rep. Bennie Thomas, who will chair the committee nomination.

California’s Dixie Fire continues to grow, destroying 16 structures; Oregon’s Bootleg Fire reaches 46% containment

Fire officials said Sunday that California’s Dixie Fire — the largest active blaze in California — has destroyed 16 structures throughout the state as multiple wildfires continue to burn on the West Coast.  According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, more than 10,700 structures in Butte and Plumas Counties remain threatened by the Dixie Fire as it has grown to 190,625 acres and is just 21% contained

Officials deployed 5,022 fire personnel to combat the fire, but weather conditions have made efforts difficult.  The U.S. Forest Service said in a statement: “Atmospheric conditions are less stable and therefore large pyrocumulus clouds are expected to develop over the fire increasing the potential for spot fires and rapid fire growth.”

Firefighters in Oregon worked to improve containment on the Bootleg Fire, the largest active blaze in the United States, increasing containment to 46% as the blaze has burned 408,930 acres. Joel Hessel, incident commander for the Oregon Department of Forestry Incident Management Team said: “The progress that we have made is due to the continuous, vigilant work by our crews. Severe fire weather conditions and extremely dry fuels continue to challenge us on this fire.”

Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean team up for “If I Didn’t Love You”

Jason Aldean has released a brand new duet with Carrie Underwood called “If I Didn’t Love You,” the lead single from his forthcoming 10th studio album. The song was produced by Jason’s longtime friend and collaborator Michael Knox, co-written by his bandmates Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy alongside John Morgan and Lydia Vaughan.

“If I Didn’t Love You” marks the first time Aldean and Underwood have released a duet together.  Aldean said: “We were pretty close to finishing up this album, but this song came in and we knew we had to record it. I went ahead and put my vocals down while we asked Carrie in the meantime. Luckily she loved the song and it was kind of like a rocket from there. She did her thing like only Carrie can…and I don’t know how, but she made it sound even better than what we expected. It’s a really special song to start this album.”
