Martina McBride looks back at her career on 30th anniversary of her first recording contract

Martina McBride on Monday celebrated the 30th anniversary of signing her first recording contract, with RCA Nashville.  To mark the milestone, the singer reflected on her illustrious career by breaking down her five biggest hits in an interview with Billboard.

Looking back on her 1994 hit single “Independence Day,” McBride said she “knew I wanted to record this song immediately.”

“Halfway through the first listen I claimed it as mine. Looking back, it was kind of a ballsy move, I guess…to record and release this song,” she grinned. “I recognized the brilliance of the songwriting immediately and also felt a connection with this mother and child. I haven’t heard anything else that sounds like it to this day.”

Martina then dished on her 1995 song “Wild Angels,” telling the outlet, “I have always loved the energy of this song and the melody” and added, “This was my first No. 1 song.”

When looking back at 1997’s “A Broken Wing,” McBride said the song “felt really special” when she heard it, adding she “felt like it would empower someone who needed to hear it. I still haven’t heard a song about emotional abuse that is quite this direct.”

That led her to discussing “Concrete Angel,” a song about child abuse, which she released in 2002. “I hesitated to record it because I thought it might be too heavy. But in the end I followed my gut, which was telling me I needed to do it,” she said. “I think, in the end, it’s a healing song for many.”

Martina ended with 2003’s “This One’s for the Girls,” of which she said, “It can be difficult to find an uptempo song with substance.  I love the way this song hits on different stages of life. It’s really timeless.”

Do Dan + Shay and Carrie Underwood have a collaboration in the works?

On Tuesday, the Grammy-winning duo posted a video of a live orchestra playing in the studio, and tagged the fellow superstar alongside the raised-eyes emoji. President Biden meets with governors in Louisiana, Mississippi to launch coordinated Ida response

President Joe Biden told state and local officials in Mississippi and Louisiana on Monday that the federal government ‘will do everything in its power to help areas impacted by Hurricane Ida to recover quickly.’

Biden met with Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves and others during a virtual briefing, saying that his administration is “there to help you get back on your feet” in the aftermath of flooding and destruction caused by the storm. Ida made landfall in Louisiana Sunday morning, with wind gusts of 172 mph at its peak. The Category 4 hurricane cut power to all of New Orleans, and the city issued a flash flood emergency. Ida also caused flooding in neighboring Mississippi.

The president said he has activated 5,000 National Guard troops to help with rescue and recovery efforts and joined local officials in urging those in affected areas to stay put in their homes for their safety until help arrives. Biden assured, “We’re doing all we can to minimize the amount of time it’s going to take to get power back up for everyone in the region. People in Louisiana and Mississippi are resilient, but it is in moments like these that we can see the power of government to meet the needs of people and respond to people, if government is prepared to respond — that is our job.”

For Niko Moon, it's gold boots and a “Good Time” out on tour with Lady A

Niko Moon‘s debut single, “Good Time,” topped the chart back in March, and now that the accompanying album of the same name is out, the celebration is still underway — sort of.

“I ended up going to Lucchese and getting some boots for me and all the people close to me who helped me make the song,” he explains. “I had ’em made, you know, they’ll measure your foot. I got some custom gold boots made.”

“They’re still not here. I’m not gonna get ’em till December, and I ordered them in March,” he laughs. “So it’s like a nine-month boot baby.”

In the meantime, Niko’s out on the What a Song Can Do Tour with Lady A, and is already working on new music.

“It’s the first big tour I’ve ever been on and, you know, I got to be honest, I didn’t know none of ’em personally before the tour,” he tells ABC Audio. “And they are the kindest, sweetest people. It’s been amazing. And Carly Pearce and Tenille Arts are so sweet too. So I’ve had a lot of fun.”

“Me and Lady A have been writing a lot of songs together,” he reveals, “so it’s been great. These songs are coming out pretty good, I ain’t gonna lie, man. I mean, I got a good feeling that some of ’em are gonna see the light of day.”

You can stream or download Good Time, featuring Niko’s new single, “Paradise to Me,” now.

Pentagon confirms evacuation of Afghanistan is completed, officially ending 20-year war

The Pentagon announced on Monday that the United States has completed its evacuation mission at the international airport in Afghanistan, officially bringing an end to the longest war in American history. Coalition forces were racing to meet the Aug. 31 deadline imposed by the Taliban to withdraw U.S. troops following a conflict that has spanned over four presidencies.

U.S. Central Command leader Gen. Kenneth McKenzie announced that the last C-17 military transport aircraft carrying U.S. citizens and eligible Afghans who assisted the country during the two-decade war had left Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul at 3:29 p.m. EDT. He added that Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, and U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ross Wilson were aboard the final flight. The departure of the last C-17 signals “the end of the nearly 20-year mission that began in Afghanistan shortly after Sept. 11, 2001,” McKenzie said.
