President Biden condemns Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in a speech to the United Nations

President Biden condemned Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine during his keynote address at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. During his remarks at U.N. headquarters in New York City as part of the General Debate, Biden said President Vladimir Putin is acting aggressively and irresponsibly by threatening to use nuclear weapons.

Biden said Russia has violated the tenets of the United Nations by going to war with Ukraine in February, and  called the military aggression “outrageous”. He pushed the United Nations to support Ukraine: “The world should see these outrageous acts for what they are. Putin claimed he had to act because Russia was threatened. No one threatened Russia and no one other than Russia sought conflict. In fact, we warned he was coming.” Biden pointed to Russian attacks that have targeted civilian centers, residential areas, schools, hospitals, rail stations, and said evidence of war crimes is everywhere: “This war is about extinguishing Ukraine’s right to exist as a state, plain and simple. That should make your blood run cold.”

Biden noted that 141 countries have condemned Russia for the war and dozens have given billions in emergency aid.  He said Putin must pay, or else it will only motivate other autocratic regimes to act in a similar fashion in the future:  “If nations can pursue their imperial ambitions without consequences, then we put at risk everything this institution stands for. This past year, the world was tested as well. We did not hesitate. We chose liberty. We chose sovereignty. We stood with Ukraine. Like you, the United States wants this war to end, on just terms. On terms, we all signed up for. You cannot seize a nation’s territory by force. The only country that is standing in the way of that is Russia.”

Putin, in a rare national address on Wednesday, threatened to use nuclear weapons in the conflict and said he was partially mobilizing hundreds of thousands of reservists in Russia to bolster the military in Ukraine. It’s believed to be the first troop mobilization in Russia since World War II.  Putin said: “I want to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and some components are more modern than those of the NATO countries. And at the threat to the territorial integrity of our country, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff.”

Unflinching honesty, 90s bops + a “roller coaster” of emotion? That's 'Subject to Change,' says Kelsea Ballerini

When fans finally get their ears on Subject to Change, Kelsea Ballerini hopes it'll take them on a whirlwind of emotions.

“I loved the idea of having a record that takes you through a roller coaster — of growing up, and love, and a lot of inward conversation and maturity,” the singer tells ABC Audio. “Just airing all that out there in a way that feels witty and poetic and honest.”

As the title suggests there's a major theme of change on the record — good change, bad change and all the growing pains that make us who we are.

“I never really have a start and stop date for writing [for my albums],” Kelsea explains. “When it's time to make an album, I listen through to the demos that I've written over the last year and a half, and I see what they say.”

In the case of the “80 songs” that Kelsea wrote during the Subject to Change era, the songs were talking about different kinds of change. “I was noticing a lot of contrast and a lot of juxtaposition and a lot of change,” she notes.

Any artist would hope that each record sharpens and matures their sound, and Kelsea says that's the case for Subject to Change, too.

“I'm really proud of what this record says about me in the last couple of years,” she notes. “Because I feel like it's really honest. And also I feel like, sonically, it is so heavily 90s-influenced, and I hope it brings people nostalgia, too.”

Subject to Change arrives on Friday. Kelsea previewed the new album, which features lead single “Heartfirst,” before releasing it in full.

Taylor Swift announces title of the 13th track on her upcoming album Midnights, called “Mastermind”

Taylor Swift dropped the name of the 13th song on the tracklist for her upcoming album Midnights. The singer, 32, revealed the song is titled “Mastermind.”

Swift shared the news in a new TikTok series called “Midnights Mayhem With Me.” Said Swift: “I know that I have a habit of dropping cryptic clues and Easter eggs when giving you information about my music, and I am not here to deny that. But I am here to defy that. Welcome to a new series I’m calling ‘Midnights Mayhem With Me.’” Using a bingo ball cage, Swift explained that she was going to allow fate to decide what track titles to announce and in what order, saying: “In this cage are 13 Ping Pong balls labeled one through 13, each representing a track on the Midnights album. So, let’s leave it up to fate.”  The first ball that rolled out of the cage was the one labeled with the number 13, Swift’s favorite number. She said, “Track 13…because of course.” Picking up a red phone, Taylor then revealed the name of the song ‘Mastermind’.

Swift announced her upcoming album at the 2022 MTV VMAs in August while accepting the Video of the Year award.  She has continued to drop hints about Midnights since then, such as by sharing the cover art and posting behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album. In an August Instagram post, Swift described Midnights as “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered” throughout her life.

Midnights will be released Oct. 21.

Mariah Carey plans to release her ‘lost’ alternative-rock album

Mariah Carey revealed in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that she made an alternative rock album in the ’90s, but she kept it hidden until two years ago. The 1995 album Someone’s Ugly Daughter by the band ‘Chick’ was her ‘lost grunge’ album, and Carey’s lead vocals were recorded over by a musician named Clarissa Dane. In a 2004 interview with Dane, the Chick singer explained that she was Carey’s roommate at the time of the recording sessions.  While the Chick album isn’t currently available to stream, upon its initial release it had major label support and spawned singles such as “Malibu” and “Demented.”

Back in 2020, Mariah tweeted – “Fun fact: I did an alternative album while I was making [my 1995 album] Daydream ..my friend Clarissa … performs the lead, [with] me as a hidden layer.” Carey said at the time she recorded it “just for laughs, but it got me through some dark days.”

Now according to a new interview with Carey on Rolling Stone’s Rolling Stone Now podcast, a version with Carey’s original vocals has evidently been recovered by the star, and she plans to release it. Carey discovered the buried version of her secret alt-rock album with her own lead vocals intact. Carey said she is planning to release those versions, and is also planning something ‘mysterious’ related to the project with ‘another artist.’ It is currently unknown who the other mystery artist is.

Maren Morris might not attend the CMA Awards this year: “I don't feel comfortable going”

Maren Morris' Humble Quest is up for Album of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards, but she says that she might not attend the ceremony this year — even though she's grateful for the nomination.

“Honestly, I haven't decided if I'm gonna go,” Maren tells the Los Angeles Times in a new interview. “I'm very honored that my record is nominated. But I don't know if I feel [at] home there right now.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Maren spoke about her recent feud with Jason Aldean's wife, Brittany, regarding some transphobic comments that Brittany made in an Instagram reel. It's not the first time that Maren has spoken out against racism, sexism or other hate-filled speech and actions in the country music industry.

“So many people I love will be in that room, and maybe I'll make a game-time decision and go,” the singer says of the CMAs. “But as of right now, I don't feel comfortable going.”

She went on to say that she's at peace with that decision, especially because she's previously felt uncomfortable at awards shows.

“I think I was more sad going last year,” Maren admits. “Some nights are fun. Others I'm just crawling out of my skin. I'm not good at those events because I'm awkward. But this time I kind of feel peaceful at the notion of not going.”

The 2022 CMA Awards will air live from Nashville November 9 on ABC. Luke Bryan is set to co-host the show alongside Peyton Manning.
