Trump special master overturned by appeals court in Mar-a-Lago document review

A panel of judges on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday to overturn the appointment of a special master tasked with reviewing thousands of documents seized by the FBI from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate this summer. The ruling by the three-judge panel goes into effect in seven days, absent intervention by the full circuit court or the Supreme Court.

The judges found: “The law is clear. We cannot write a rule that allows any subject of a search warrant to block government investigations after the execution of the warrant. Nor can we write a rule that allows only former presidents to do so.”  The order eliminates a major obstacle in federal authorities ongoing criminal investigation into whether Trump illegally retained highly classified records after leaving the presidency and obstructed efforts by the government to recover them. Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The appellate judges repeatedly expressed concern that the appointment of third-party judge Raymond Dearie by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida lacked any clear precedent. Cannon had empowered Dearie, as special master, to evaluate the approximately 13,000 materials taken from Trump’s club, including roughly 100 documents with classification markings. Dearie was supposed to analyze if any of the documents that were taken raised privilege concerns, either executive privilege or attorney-client privilege.

Jason Aldean and his family are celebrating a very special birthday: The singer's son, Memphis, turns five years old today.

“Happy bday to my little rock star today,” the singer wrote on social media, alongside a carousel of photos showing Memphis through the years. The snapshots show Memphis hanging out in the water, chilling on a couch with a large stuffed deer and posing for photos with his parents: Jason and wife Brittany Aldean.

“5 years ago I was blessed with my only son and it has been an honor being his daddy and watching him grow,” Jason continued. “You are a special lil guy and we love u more than you will ever know. Happy bday Bubba.”

Garth Brooks extends his Las Vegas residency through 2024

For Garth Brooks, one year in Las Vegas just isn't enough.

The singer announced this week that he's extending his Garth Brooks/Plus ONE Vegas residency due to massive fan demand for the 27-date 2023 residency that he initially put on the books.

Garth previously shared that his 2023 shows sold out in the first day of presale and hinted that he was working on a way to expand his Vegas stay. “How do you take care of those people who weren't taken care of?” he wondered in an installment of his Facebook Live series, Inside Studio G.

The answer to that question, it seems, is to stay in Vegas through 2024.

“You're scared to death, you know, when they tell you that they're going to put on a whole year of shows. And then…the first day of on-sale…they call you and tell you that the whole year is gone,” Garth recounts. “That's an amazing feeling, as you can imagine. And all of a sudden it hits you — they want to extend this!”

Dates for the new performances will be announced in May 2023, surrounding the kick-off of the Garth Brooks/Plus ONE residency. All shows will take place at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

“Well…the only thing better than one year at Caesars Palace in Vegas would be two years, right?!! So I'm there!!” he continues.

One Night at a Time: Morgan Wallen plans a 2023 world tour and readies a three-pack of new songs

Morgan Wallen is gearing up for a massive 2023. This week, the singer announced his upcoming One Night at a Time World Tour, which will bring him to a wide array of U.S. cities as well as stops in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

News of the new trek comes just weeks after Morgan wrapped his 2022 Dangerous Tour. The singer says he's not interested in taking much time off.

“I have been writing and making so much music in my off-time because I feel as inspired as I ever have,” he states. “It feels like new songs are pouring out of me, and I love that feeling.”

To kick things off, the singer will drop a three-pack of new songs at midnight, December 2. One of those, “One Thing at a Time,” inspired the name of his new tour, and the other two are the fan-requested “Tennessee Fan” and “Days That End in Why.” Morgan says there's more where that came from.

“Also, I'm not quite done making this new album, so I'm going to keep making it through the holiday break and early January to chase this inspiration,” he continues. “I promise I won't wait too long to reveal the album details.”

Hardy, Parker McCollum, Ernest and Bailey Zimmerman are special guests on the trek. Tickets for the One Night at a Time Tour go on sale December 9; three dollars of every U.S. ticket will benefit the Morgan Wallen Foundation, supporting causes like Greater Good Music, Children Are People, the Salvation Army and the National Museum of African American Music.

U.S. House Democrats elect Hakeem Jeffries to become first Black party leader

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York has been elected the next Democratic House leader, making history as the first black lawmaker to lead a political party’s caucus. The 52-year-old Jeffries was elected on Wednesday in a unanimous vote, as Democrats prepare to relinquish control of the House in January. Jeffries will take over for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who announced earlier this month she would not seek leadership next session. Pelosi has served as the House Democratic leader since 2003.

Jeffries was first elected to Congress in 2012; his top deputy will be Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., 59, who served under Jeffries as vice chair of the Democratic Caucus and rose to assistant speaker in this Congress. The trio represents a generational shift for Democrats, who are currently led by a trio in their 80s.  Jeffries told reporters in the Capitol: “This is a moment of transition  We stand on the shoulders of giants, but are also looking forward to being able to do what’s necessary at this moment to advance the issues.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Jeffries’ election a turning point in the history of the United States Congress: “It’s not surprising that House Democrats are turning to someone from Brooklyn to lead the way next year, because when you’re from Brooklyn, you learn quickly traits like persistence and serious mettle. It’s a crowded place and a diverse place. You learn how to work with all kinds of different people. You learn how to stand your ground. You learn to not take things personally.”
