Nashville notes: Annie Bosko + Vince Gill's duet, Oliver Anthony's debut album

Annie Bosko has teamed up with Vince Gill for her new track, “Higher Ground.” “Sometimes it takes someone else believing in you to make you believe in yourself. I hope this message provides hope for those who are navigating tough times, like it did for me,” says Annie, who penned the song with Vince in mind after he gave her his number and offered to collaborate after being impressed by her vocals at a private event.

Oliver Anthony, whose song “Rich Men North of Richmond” became a viral hit in 2023, is releasing his debut album, Hymnal of a Troubled Man’s Mind, independently on Sunday, March 31. “‘Hymnal of a Troubled Man’s Mind’ is the story of my life, from 2013 until 2023,” shares Chris Lunsford, whose moniker is Oliver Anthony. “This album represents the most pure and transparent view inside my heart and soul that I could offer. While Richmond was the song that got my name out in the public, this release represents the true foundation of the music that got me through life up until now.”

Dalton Dover‘s dropped a new track, “Bury Me In This Bar.” Of the song, Dalton shares, “We really wanted to capture the fun and energy of those ’90s country bar anthems that you just can't skip or resist singing along with when you hear it. I believe it's one that would make my heroes proud, and we can't wait to hear people sing it with us on the road.”

Dolly Parton reacts to Beyoncé's “Jolene” cover on 'Cowboy Carter'

Dolly Parton is giving Beyoncé‘s “Jolene” cover her seal of approval.

The country music legend took to Instagram on Friday, the day Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album dropped, to weigh in on the singer’s cover of her iconic 1973 song.

“Wow, I just heard Jolene,” she shared in a statement. “Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it! Love, Dolly P.”

Dolly — who previously praised Beyoncé when her Cowboy Carter track “Texas Hold ‘Em” debuted at #1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart — signed the statement as “Dolly P,” a playful reference to the interlude on Cowboy Carter of the same name in which Parton introduces Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover.

“Hey, Miss Honeybee, it’s Dolly P. You know that hussy with the good hair you sing about?” Dolly says in the interlude, referencing Beyoncé’s song “Sorry” off her 2016 album, Lemonade, in which she sings, “He only want me when I’m not there/ He better call Becky with the good hair.”

“Reminded me of someone I knew back when,” Parton continues. “Except she has flaming locks of auburn hair. Bless her heart. Just a hair of a different color, but it hurts just the same.”

There are a lot of similarities between the two versions, but Beyoncé adds her own flare to her cover.

The tone is different, as well. While Parton’s version is pleading with Jolene not to take her man, Beyoncé’s version reminds Jolene “you don’t want no heat with me.”

The rest of Beyoncé’s “Jolene” cover continues this trend, taking Parton’s iconic tune and fully reinventing and modernizing the song to fit her own story through to the very end.

Cowboy Carter is what Beyoncé recently described in an Instagram post as “act ii” and “a continuation of RENAISSANCE,” which was released in July 2022.

Scotty McCreery on releasing “Red Letter Blueprint”: “My faith is everything to me”

Scotty McCreery‘s gearing up for Easter Sunday with his new faith-inspired track, “Red Letter Blueprint.”

Scotty wrote the song with Derek George, Brent Anderson, Jeremy Bussey and Monty Criswell, and it finds Scotty proudly underscoring one of the most important things to him: his Christian faith.

“My faith is everything to me. It's held me up during my lows, and it's been with me when I celebrate my highs,” shares Scotty. “This new album was influenced by the rises and falls in my life through the years, so I wanted to sing about what sustains me.”

“I've featured songs about my wife and my son, but I also wanted to share a song about my faith,” he continues. “I hope it is comforting to anyone who may need to hear these words.”

Lyrically, “Red Letter Blueprint” follows Scotty’s reflection on life’s ups and downs and how his religion, through the Bible, has been a steadfast anchor.

“Where can you go when you ain’t getting nowhere/ Every turn is a dead-end road/ The rain starts to fall and you’re so lost out there/ Really only one place I know/ When your whole world falls to pieces/ And you don’t know how to build it back/ There’s a red letter blueprint in King James black,” Scotty sings in the chorus with his signature baritone.

You can find “Red Letter Blueprint” on Scotty’s forthcoming fifth album, Rise & Fall. Due out May 10, the 13-track project will also feature its lead single, “Cab in a Solo,” which is now in the top 10 of the country charts.

Come April 20, Scotty will also be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as a member by Josh Turner.

Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' has left the stable

Beyoncé's eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, is available worldwide now.

The superstar already had a smash on her hands with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which made Beyoncé the first Black female artist to reach #1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs and Hot 100 charts with a country song.

The lead track, released along with “16 Carriages” on Sunday, February 11, also spent four weeks at the top of the U.K. music charts.

In a statement, Bey said of Cowboy Carter, “The joy of creating music is that there are no rules. The more I see the world evolving the more I felt a deeper connection to purity. With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones.”

The release, which blends the genres of country, blues, zydeco, and Black folk among others, also drew inspiration from films like Quentin Tarantino‘s Hateful Eight, The Coen Brothers‘ O Brother, Where Art Thou? and more.

Queen Bey said, “I didn’t want some layers of instruments like strings, especially guitars, and organs perfectly in tune. I kept some songs raw and leaned into folk.”

She continued, “All the sounds were so organic and human, everyday things like the wind, snaps and even the sound of birds and chickens, the sounds of nature.”

Beyoncé revealed the album was five years in the making, and follows Renaissance. “I was initially going to put Cowboy Carter out first,” she explains, “but with the pandemic, there was too much heaviness in the world. We wanted to dance. We deserved to dance. But I had to trust God's timing.”

“I think people are going to be surprised because I don't think this music is what everyone expects,” she says, “but it's the best music I've ever made.”

Suspect charged in connection with stabbing attack that left 4 dead, 7 injured in Rockford, Illinois

A man has been charged in connection with a stabbing attack that left four people dead – including one teenager – and seven others injured Wednesday afternoon in Rockford, Illinois. Rockford is a city of around 150,000 about 60 miles northwest of Chicago.

On Thursday morning, the Rockford Police Department confirmed to ABC News that the suspect, 22-year-old Christian Soto, was arrested as a suspect in the knife attack. Soto faces four counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder, as well as two counts of home invasion with a dangerous weapon. Authorities said that Soto is being held in the Winnebago County Jail.

Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana said that the brutal attack first began during a home invasion near Florence Street and Eggleston Road; a young woman trying to get away was stabbed in the face and hands and seriously wounded, while a Good Samaritan who tried to help the woman also was stabbed. The attacker then went on a rampage in the areas of Holmes Street, Winnetka Drive, and Cleveland Avenue in Rockford, police said. Calls for police and paramedics were soon coming in at multiple scenes in Rockford and surrounding parts of Winnebago County.

Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd said a total of four people were killed, with one critically injured, and four others taken to hospitals, where they remain in stable condition. Redd said not all of the victims were stabbed, but there were no gunshot victims. The victims who were killed include a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man.

Police confirmed Thursday, that there were no other offenders involved in the attack, with Mayor Tom McNamara releasing the following statement: “Today, we are shocked by another horrific act of violence against innocent members of our community. We can report that the suspect is in custody and the threat has been neutralized. Now that he is in custody, our primary concern is ensuring that our community members directly impacted by this violence are supported throughout their healing and recovery. We are working with community partners to provide support and services quickly and conveniently to those residents. We will announce those details soon. We have multiple jurisdictions working on multiple crime scenes to develop an understanding of what transpired in an effort to prevent this from happening again. We will continue to provide updates.”
