Nashville notes: Fresh tracks from Kassi Ashton, Dylan Marlowe + more

Kassi Ashton has released a new track, “I Don’t Wanna Dance.” Of the song, Kassi says, “It doesn’t matter how good the band is, how long the bartender has been perfecting her margarita recipe, or how hot the cowboy is who’s offering, I don’t wanna dance if I ain’t dancing with you.” Kassi’s current single, “Called Crazy,” is now in the top 50 of the country charts.

Dylan Marlowe‘s tapped rapper Yung Gravy for a fresh version of his single “Boys Back Home.” The original version, featuring Dylan Scott, is currently in the top 40 and ascending the country charts.

Annie Bosko has teamed with country icon Dwight Yoakam for a new duet, “Heart Burn.” “Dwight is not only my musical hero but an icon, from his music to his sense of style, and we both share Bakersfield roots,” says Annie. “I love that he effortlessly crosses genres, blending everything from country, Americana, rock and latin influences, and it feels like we were able to capture that in this song.”

Maddie & Tae are ready for a “Sad Girl Summer”

Don’t be deceived by the title of Maddie & Tae‘s new song, “Sad Girl Summer” – it’s not actually a sad tune.

Instead, it’s a vibrant, uptempo track that’s all about celebrating one’s newfound freedom following a breakup.

“This ain’t no sad girl summer, girl, we’re sayin’ goodbye/ To that bummer of a boy who’d been makin’ you cry/ There’s a good time waitin’, quit wastin’ your time/ Let’s get somethin’ new cookin’, ooh, ’cause you lookin’/ Hot, hot, hotter than a hundred degrees/ Think of the shots, shots, shots you could be gettin’ for free/ I know that a broken heart hurts like a mother/ But this ain’t no sad girl summer,” the duo’s Maddie Font and Taylor Kerr sing in the triumphant chorus.

“‘Sad Girl Summer’ was such a blast to write. We co-wrote this with Tae's husband, Josh Kerr, wanting to create an empowering summertime anthem for our fans to jam to this year!” Maddie & Tae share. “This song is the first look at the bold, confident songwriting you'll hear woven through this upcoming chapter of music for us.”

Maddie & Tae’s latest projects are 2022’s Through The Madness Vol. 1 and Through The Madness Vol. 2, which followed their 2020 full-length album, The Way It Feels.

Maddie & Tae are currently on their headlining Here’s To Friends Tour. On June 8, they’ll celebrate CMA Fest with appearances at the UMG Nashville Takeover at Skydeck on Broadway and the sold-out Tracy Lawrence and Friends concert at Ascend Amphitheater.

Jackson Dean dedicates “Big Blue Sky” to late dog

Jackson Dean‘s paying tribute to his late childhood dog in his new song, “Big Blue Sky.”

“He got that big blue sky on his mind/ Running like he’s still got time on his side/ Dying just to see it/ Living just to breathe it/ Has he just been dreaming/ Or is it somewhere somewhere underneath that big blue sky,” Jackson sings in the chorus as he imagines meeting his remarkable pup, Carl, as a human living life to the fullest.

“We had Carl since he could fit in the palm of my hand and I was thinking about him, all of the adventures we went on together and all the times he'd been there for me-he was just a damn good dog, and I wanted to write a song with a really big sound to really do his personality justice,” shares Jackson.

“The inspiration may be a little bittersweet but there is a real joy to ‘Big Blue Sky’ and it fills my cup to watch the boys in the band absolutely tear it up on stage as a tip of the hat to Carl,” he adds.

“Big Blue Sky” previews Jackson’s follow-up to his 2022 debut album, Greenbroke, which spawned the chart-topping “Don’t Come Lookin’.”

The eight-track project features Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce, Ashley McBryde, Lauren Alaina, Kelly Clarkson and Nashville-based singer/songwriter Ben Rector joining Terri on duet renditions of her hits.

“These songs very literally changed my life. To now have the chance to say thank you by giving them a new life with some of the hottest artists in music has been one of the most soul-fulfilling experiences of my career,” shares Terri. “We began working on these duet versions over a year ago, and the time has come when I finally get to share them with all of you.”

Donald Trump found guilty on all 34 counts in ‘hush money’ criminal trial

Former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts by the jury in his “hush money” trial in New York on Thursday, making him the first former president in U.S. history to be convicted of a crime. At the end of their second day of deliberations the 12 person jury found Trump guilty on all counts.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office brought the unprecedented case against Trump, aiming to prove he falsified financial records – “with intent to defraud” – to mask a $130,000 hush money payment his former-attorney Michael Cohe nmade to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in the final days of his 2016 presidential election, and also that he did so in order to conceal a second crime (elevating the charges from misdemeanors to felonies). Trump pleaded not guilty to the 34-count indictment.

New York Judge Juan Merchan set a sentencing date of July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where Trump will be formally nominated. He could face up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each count, but Merchan could limit the punishment to a fine, probation or home confinement.

Actor Nick Pasqual arrested at U.S.-Mexico border after stabbing of estranged girlfriend

Actor Nick Pasqual has been arrested and charged with stabbing his estranged girlfriend. According to prosecutors, Pasqual, 34, allegedly attempted to kill his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her multiple times on May 23 at her home in the Sunland neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Pasqual allegedly fled the scene and was later apprehended at a U.S.-Mexico border check point in Texas.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on Wednesday that Pasqual, 34, had been charged with one count of attempted murder, a count of first-degree residential burglary with a person present, and one count of injuring a spouse, cohabitant, fiancé, boyfriend, girlfriend or child’s parent. The actor was detained at a check point in Sierra Blanca, Texas, and will be extradited to Los Angeles County, where he faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison if convicted.

District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement: “My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the victim in this horrific incident. Our office, including our Bureau of Victim Services, extends our support and resources to her as she embarks on the long and difficult journey of healing from both the physical and emotional trauma inflicted upon her. This heinous incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence. We will ensure that the individual responsible for this egregious act is held accountable for their actions.”

The DA’s office did not identify the victim by name, but Entertainment Tonight reported that the victim is makeup artist Allie Shehorn. A GoFundMe account has been launched and verified by the platform to help cover Shehorn’s medical expenses. Shehorn, who recently filed a restraining order against Pasqual, was hospitalized with critical injuries. Friends said she has already gone through multiple surgeries and is expected to have an extended hospital stay as part of her recovery.

Pasqual has appeared in film and TV projects including “Rebel Moon: Part 1,” “Mean Girls” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Archive 81. ”

Dasha on how her “scorned woman” sentiments fueled “Austin”

Sometimes you enter a songwriting room completely open to ideas and topics to write about. And sometimes you walk in after a breakup, feeling contemptuous about an old flame who did you wrong.

That was what happened to Dasha on the day she wrote her debut single, “Austin.”

“I was in a session in LA and we were writing this completely different song,” Dasha recalls to ABC Audio. “I was already writing this album, What Happens Now?, and I knew I wanted this upbeat, scorned woman song. I was going through this kind of gnarly breakup at the time, and I was pretty upset with this guy. There’d been a lot of excuses and I’d been mistreated very much so.”

Dasha wanted to let art imitate life, but she didn’t want a sad, woe-is-me ballad.

“I was like, ‘You guys, no. This is too slow. I want my scorned woman song. I’m pissed right now,'” Dasha recalls. “I had so much fury inside of me about this guy. And so we restarted and then we started playing the chords for ‘Austin.’ And literally, the first thing that came out of my mouth was like, freestyle, ‘Did your boots stop working? Did your truck break down?'”

“Everyone’s like, ‘What’d you say?’ And I was like, ‘Did your boots stop working.’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah. No, that’s it.’ And so we wrote the song in less than an hour, and it was just like pure magic in the room,” she shares.

“After I wrote the song, everyone on my team was like, ‘Yeah, girl. This is gonna be the one that puts you on the map,'” recounts Dasha. “So the whole roll out to the album was around pushing ‘Austin,’ and it worked.”

Carly Pearce reveals heart condition, shares plans to adjust upcoming shows

Carly Pearce took to social media Thursday to share a health update, revealing that she has been diagnosed with the heart condition pericarditis. Pearce, 34, said she plans to tone down her performances as she recovers, and that while she plans to fulfill the upcoming dates on a current tour, she needs to follow doctor’s orders.

In a video to fans on Instagram captioned “health update. love y’all 💛, Pearce shared: “You guys know that I’ve been dealing with some health issues and through that, I have developed something called pericarditis, which is a heart issue. I’ve been working with doctors and talking to my cardiologist, and I still want to be out on the road — it’s really important to me — but we have all decided that it’s in my best interest as I’m healing to alter my shows a little bit.” Pearce added: “So if my shows look a little bit different, just know it’s because I have to keep my heart rate under control right now. And the doesn’t mean I’m not going to be completely fine, it just means right now I’ve got to really take this seriously. So if you’re coming to the shows … It is all going to be great, it just might look a little different. So I’m asking for a little bit of grace.”

Pearce is currently on the road as special guest on Tim McGraw’s Standing Room Only tour which kicked off in March, with dates scheduled through June. The singer has a new album, “Hummingbird,” out June 7, which drops just two days before she is scheduled to appear on the main stage at the CMA Festival in Nashville.  Aside from some summer festival dates planned, Pearce’s next scheduled headlining tour is set for early 2025.
