Trump Administration to reevaluate green cards from 19 nations following DC guard shooting

The Trump administration on Thursday ordered an extensive review of green card holders from 19 countries the government classifies as security concerns, announcing the move just one day after two National Guard members were ambushed near the White House.

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the directive came directly from President Trump. In a statement on X, Edlow wrote, “At the direction of @POTUS, I have directed a full scale, rigorous reexamination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern.” He added that safeguarding the country “remains paramount” and that the U.S. would not continue “the prior administration’s reckless resettlement policies.”

The list of nations flagged for heightened screening was outlined in a June administration memo and includes Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran, Venezuela, Somalia, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Burundi.

The decision follows Wednesday’s attack in downtown Washington, where National Guard members Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolfe, 24, were shot near the Farragut West Metro station. President Trump announced Thursday night that Beckstrom had died, while Wolfe remained in critical condition.

Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, an Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, the Biden-era resettlement program for Afghans who had assisted U.S. forces during the war.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said her office is reviewing the suspect’s immigration record and the vetting conducted prior to his arrival. The administration later confirmed that Lakanwal was granted asylum this April, after Trump returned to office.

FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators are examining the suspect’s past ties to U.S.-partnered Afghan units, noting that “This subject had a relationship in Afghanistan with partner forces.” The CIA also confirmed he previously worked with a U.S.-supported team in Kandahar before the 2021 withdrawal.

Family members told NBC News that Lakanwal had served alongside U.S. Special Forces for a decade and was living with his wife and five children in Bellingham, Washington, before driving cross-country shortly before the attack.

In response, the Trump administration immediately suspended all pending immigration requests involving Afghan nationals. Homeland Security officials said they are also reviewing all asylum approvals issued under Biden-era policies and an earlier court settlement that sped up Afghan asylum processing.

Separately, the administration this week ordered USCIS to “re-interview” roughly 200,000 refugees who entered the United States in recent years—part of a broader effort to reassess vetting procedures. Officials indicated that refugee protections could be revoked if new concerns surface.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Lakanwal. He has been charged with multiple counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, though additional charges are expected following Beckstrom’s death.

One of two injured National Guard Soldiers has died after ambush near White House

President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that one of the West Virginia National Guard soldiers wounded in what authorities have described as a deliberate attack near the White House has died.

U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries hours after she and fellow Guardsman Andrew Wolfe, 24, were shot while patrolling near the Farragut West Metro station on Wednesday afternoon. Beckstrom’s death, he said, occurred just before his planned holiday call with deployed U.S. troops. Calling her a “highly respected, young, magnificent person,” Trump told service members, “She’s just passed away. She’s no longer with us.” Wolfe, he added, “is fighting for his life” and remains in critical condition.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro issued a statement shortly afterward, honoring Beckstrom as a hero who “volunteered to serve DC on Thanksgiving for people she never met.” She wrote, “May she rest in peace. It is now time to avenge her death and secure justice.”

Beckstrom enlisted in the West Virginia National Guard in June 2023, where she served as a military police soldier with the 863rd Military Police Company. The commander of the Joint Task Force District of Columbia confirmed Army National Guard Spc. Sarah Beckstrom’s death in a statement Thursday night, hailing her as “a hero.”  Col. Larry Doane said in a statement: “This is a devastating loss to our National Guard family. Spc. Sarah Beckstrom came to the District from West Virginia to make our nation’s capital safe and beautiful. She is a hero and we mourn her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones and with the West Virginia National Guard.”

Federal officials say the shooting occurred around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect — identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal — allegedly approached the Guardsmen and opened fire with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. Pirro said the shooter first struck one soldier at close range, leaned over, fired again, then shot the second Guardsman repeatedly. Nearby National Guard members responded immediately, confronting and ultimately wounding the attacker before taking him into custody. Lakanwal, 29, was hospitalized under guard.

Authorities described the attack as both “brazen” and “targeted,” noting that investigators believe the suspect drove from Washington state with the intention of harming Guard personnel. FBI Director Kash Patel said the shooting is now part of an “ongoing investigation of terrorism.” Patel confirmed that investigators have executed multiple search warrants across the country, including at the suspect’s residence in Bellingham, Washington, where he lived with his wife and five children. Agents have interviewed family members and associates both there and in San Diego.

According to federal officials, Lakanwal is an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 through a Biden administration resettlement initiative and was granted asylum in 2024. CIA Director John Ratcliffe said Lakanwal previously worked with “a partner force in Kandahar” alongside U.S. government personnel before the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Patel said authorities are scrutinizing the suspect’s background and any potential connections overseas or within the United States. Evidence from the scene has been sent to the FBI laboratory in Quantico as part of what he described as a “coast-to-coast investigation.”

The National Guard remains a major component of the administration’s security strategy for Washington, with more than 2,000 personnel assigned to the city.  Trump said “millions of Americans” were praying for the soldiers’ families. “Unfortunately,” he added, “two families are shattered and destroyed and torn apart as the result of the actions of one man.”

Meghan Trainor releases the holiday single ‘Gifts For Me’

Meghan Trainor has dropped the single “Gifts For Me,” her latest holiday music since the 2020 album A Very Trainor Christmas, and her 2023 track ‘Wrap Me Up’ (ft. Jimmy Fallon).

The holiday single follows Trainor’s recent announcement of her seventh full-length album Toy With Me, dropping April 24, 2026.  Trainor also shared news of the 2026 ‘The Girl Get In Tour’ in support of the LP.

Speaking about the album, Meghan said: “’Toy With Me’ feels like the most honest and fearless I’ve ever been — it’s all about self-confidence, freedom, and learning how to meet people where they are at. I wanted to kick off this new chapter with a song that makes people feel unstoppable, and I can’t wait to bring that same energy to everyone on The Get In Girl Tour next summer.”

To preview the upcoming album, Meghan dropped the track ‘Still Don’t Care’; and shared of the track:  “‘Still Don’t Care’ really sets the tone for this whole Toy With Me era — it’s bold, fun, a little cheeky, and full of confidence. This song came from a place of growth for me; I’m learning to care less about perfection and more about what actually makes me happy. I’m learning to shake off negativity, choosing joy, and living life my way — because at this point in my life and career, I’m ready to be done worrying about pleasing everyone. ‘Still Don’t Care’ is my reminder to myself — and to anyone who’s ever felt judged.”

The Get In Girl Tour will make stops across over 30 arenas and amphitheaters in North America next summer. Kicking off in Clarkston on June 12, Meghan will be supported on tour by Icona Pop and Ryan Trainor. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Trevor Project, a non profit organisation with a charitable mission to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) young people.

Luke Combs would perform at the Super Bowl – under these circumstances

It’s been years since a country artist performed during Super Bowl halftime, but Luke Combs says he’d be interested in the gig – under certain circumstances.

During an appearance on the MNF ManningCast, hosted by NFL icons Eli Manning and Peyton Manning, Eli asked Luke if he’d rather perform during a Super Bowl or see his favorite team, the Carolina Panthers, win a Super Bowl.

“That’s a big question,” Luke replied. “I’d like to perform at the Super Bowl and the Panthers win in the same Super Bowl. Why not both, Eli? Why not both?”

Luke recently teamed with the Panthers to release a special merch collection.

While many country stars have performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl in recent years – including Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Mickey Guyton, Chris Stapleton, Reba McEntire and Carrie Underwood – it’s been more than 20 years since a country artist did halftime. However, it was only as part of a multiple-artist show, as Shania Twain joined No Doubt and Sting for a performance in 2003.

Prior to that, the last fully country halftime show took place in 1994: The Judds, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt and Clint Black all performed.

Tucker Wetmore, others save Tracy Lawrence’s annual Thanksgiving event

A Thanksgiving miracle came to Nashville on Tuesday.

Tracy Lawrence‘s annual Mission: Possible Turkey Fry hit a snag when a broken refrigerator truck spoiled 650 turkeys out of 3,600 in total – turkeys he planned to use to feed 36,000 people throughout Middle Tennessee. Tracy put out a call for people to donate turkeys to make up the shortfall, and people came through in a major way, donating more than 2,400 birds. That extra food led to over 50,000 meals being provided to those in need.

One of those donors was Tucker Wetmore, who surprised Tracy by delivering more than 100 turkeys. Other stars came out to support the event, including Dustin Lynch, Clint Black, Rhett Akins and Jamey Johnson. Steve Wariner, Rhett and Clint also made their own turkey donations.

After the Turkey Fry, the event’s annual benefit concert took place at Luke Combs‘ Category 10 Nashville eatery, featuring Tracy, Gretchen Wilson, Eric Paslay, Chris Cagle and more. A record-breaking $355,000 was raised from donations, ticket sales and silent auction items.

“I cannot imagine a better 20th anniversary for the Mission: Possible Turkey Fry and Concert,” Tracy said in a statement. “What started as a day of uncertainty turned into a day of our community coming together in a way I couldn’t have imagined. … I was blown away once again by the kindness of our neighbors.”

And if you want more Lainey holiday viewing, she appears as an animated version of herself in Disney's Hulu's Family Guy's Hallmark Channel's Lifetime's Familiar Holiday Movie, which begins streaming on Hulu Friday. Speaking of “Somewhere Over Laredo,” it just became her ninth top-10 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Thomas Rhett mourns the passing of another family dog, Kona

Thomas Rhett and his family are mourning the loss of another beloved pet, after losing their dog Cash in October.

On Wednesday he posted a photo of his dog Kona and wrote, “It's been a tough dog month for our family. We lost our little Kona girl. I think after cash passed she just wanted to go be with him.”

“It's weird losing a dog, cause whether you know it or not they are just always there, always by your side at the dinner table,” he continued. “They are truly a part of your family. Got the courage last night to listen to @hardy song ‘Dog years’ I cried like a child, but dang that song is so spot on about the life of a dog if they could talk.”

“Kona and Cash yall will be missed a lot. I know yall are having a blast up in heaven together.”

When Cash passed, TR paid tribute by writing, “He was the most loyal, kind dog that I have ever known. He was [my wife] Lauren's best friend. He was there when every single baby came home for the first time.”

Thomas and Lauren share four children and are expecting their fifth in 2026.
