NFL Hall Of FamerJoe Montana And Wife Rescue Grandchild From Attempted Kidnapping

Authorities say that NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana and his wife, Jennifer, rescued their grandchild from an attempted kidnapping Saturday at their home in California.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the suspect, identified as Sodsai Dalzell, entered the Montana residence in Malibu around 5 p.m. Saturday. The statement alleged that she kidnapped the Montanas’ 9-month-old grandchild by removing the child from a playpen in the living room, then walked upstairs with the child, where she was met by Montana and his wife, according to the sheriff’s department.

The statement said, “Mr. Montana, and his wife Jennifer, confronted the female, attempted to de-escalate the situation, and asked for the suspect to give back their grandchild. A tussle ensued and Mrs. Montana was able to safely pry the child out of the suspects arms. The suspect fled to a nearby house, where she was located and arrested by Malibu/Lost Hills Deputie. She was charged with kidnapping and burglary. The child was not injured.”

Montana said in a statement on social media.: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well. We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time.”

The New York Times Alleges President Trump Avoided Paying Federal Income Taxes In Years Leading To His Presidency

Citing tax-return data, the New York Times reported on Sunday that President Donald Trump paid just $750 in federal income taxes in both 2016 and 2017, after years of reporting heavy losses from his business enterprises to offset hundreds of millions of dollars in income. The Times also said the President also paid no federal income taxes in 10 of the previous 15 years through 2017, despite receiving $427.4 million through 2018 from his reality television program and other endorsement and licensing deals.

The disclosure of previously private tax information came little more than a month before the Nov. 3 election between Trump and Joe Biden. Calling the report “total fake news” at a White House news conference, Trump again cited an ongoing audit as his reason for not releasing his returns. In a statement to the Times, Alan Garten, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, said Trump had paid millions of dollars in personal taxes over the last decade, without weighing in on the specific finding of minimal income taxes.

Trump’s consistent refusal to release his taxes has been a departure from standard practice for presidential candidates. He is currently in a legal battle with New York City prosecutors and congressional Democrats who are seeking to obtain his returns.

House Democrats Prepare New $2.2 Trillion COVID-19 Relief Package

House Democrats are preparing a revised coronavirus relief proposal focused on unemployment and direct payments that would cost roughly $2.2 trillion. Democrats and Republicans have been deadlocked in negotiations for more aid despite CARES Act funds expiring over the summer.

The bill would include unemployment insurance, direct payments, small-business loan funding and aid for airlines, at a cost of about $1 trillion less than the House’s previous plan.

Formal talks between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows broke down without a deal on Aug. 7, with the two sides far apart. Pelosi and Mnuchin have since spoken by phone.

“We’re ready for negotiation,” Pelosi told reporters on Thursday, saying she had last spoken to Mnuchin on Wednesday.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer added, “I don’t have an expectation at this point in time, because our focus is we want to get a deal or an agreement with [Treasury Secretary Steven] Mnuchin and the Senate because we want a bill passed and signed so that’s what our focus is — trying to get an agreement before we go home. “

President Trump Unveils Health Care Plan And Signs Twin Executive Orders On Program

On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on healthcare for Americans, a hot-button issue in light of the upcmoing Nov. 3 presidential election.

Trump signed the twin orders implementing his “America First Healthcare Plan,” and in describing part of the program said, “Under my plan 33 million Medicare beneficiaries will soon receive a card in the mail containing $200 that they can use to help pay for prescription drugs.” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told reporters on Thursday that one of the executive orders is aimed at ensuring Americans with pre-existing conditions retain healthcare coverage. Azar also said Trump was directing him via the second executive order to work with Congress to pass legislation banning surprise healthcare bills by the beginning of next year, and explore executive action to address the goal if the legislative bid fails.

The president’s action, unveiled less than six weeks before Election Day on Nov. 3, also comes amid long-standing criticisms that he has failed to follow through on promises to propose an alternative to Obamacare even as he works to dismantle that program.
