Mourners Pay Respects To Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg At U.S. Supreme Court

The late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s flag-draped coffin was placed outside the Supreme Court building on Wednesday as the United States began three days of tributes to the liberal icon.

Hundreds of mourners lined up outside the court for a chance to pay their respects to the pioneering women’s rights advocate, who died on Friday at age 87. Inside the court, Ginsburg’s fellow justices celebrated her life in a private ceremony. Chief Justice John Roberts said, “Her voice in court and in our conference room was soft. But when she spoke, people listened.”

Ginsburg’s casket was then moved under the court building’s massive columns for a public viewing due to last two days. On Friday, Ginsburg will become the first woman to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol when her casket is placed in National Statuary Hall. Both historic events for Ginsburg will come with modifications due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Capitol ceremony will be limited to invited guests only, and social distancing and face coverings will be required at the courthouse. Flowers and other offerings are forbidden on the court’s plaza or its steps.

The courthouse ia closed to the public and the justices are due to hear oral arguments by teleconference next month. Ginsburg’s courtroom chair and the bench in front of it were draped with black wool crepe to mark the occasion, a tradition that dates back at least to 1873. A black drape also hung over the courtroom doors.

Public viewing runs until 10 p.m. on Wednesday and between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday. A private interment service is planned for next week at Arlington National Cemetery. Ginsburg’s husband, Martin Ginsburg, was buried there in 2010.

One of The Three Louisville Police Officers Involved In The Breonna Taylor Shooting Is Indicted

A grand jury on Wednesday indicted one of three police officers involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor in her Louisville apartment. However, the charges relate to the firing of shots into the home next door – and not Taylor’s killing. A grand jury indicted former officer Brett Hankison on three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. The other two involved in the shooting, Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove, were not indicted.  A wanton endangerment charge is a a felony that carries one to five years in prison if Hankison is convicted. A judge issued a warrant for his arrest and set a $15,000 cash bond.

Taylor, 26, was shot during the serving of a “no-knock” search warrant on March 13 related to a narcotics investigation. The officers arrived without warning and drew resistance from Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who said he didn’t know it was police who entered the apartment and was alarmed by the sudden interruption. Taylor was not the subject of the raid, and she had no criminal history.

Ben Crump, an attorney for Taylor’s family, and co-counsels Sam Aguiar and Lonita Baker, released a statement in reaction to Wednesday’s announcement: “This is outrageous and offensive to Breonna Taylor’s memory. It’s yet another example of no accountability for the genocide of persons of color by white police officers. If Hankison’s behavior constituted wanton endangerment of the people in the apartments next to hers, then it should also be considered wanton endangerment of Breonna. In fact, it should have been ruled wanton murder. How ironic and typical that the only charges brought in this case were for shots fired into the apartment of a white neighbor, while no charges were brought for the shots fired into the Black neighbor’s apartment or into Breonna’s residence.”
