Justice Department launches probe of Louisville PD’s use of force

The Justice Department launched a wide-ranging “pattern or practice” investigation of Louisville’s police department on Monday, in the wake of last year’s police shooting death of Breonna Taylor.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a news conference that the civil investigation into the Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government and the Louisville Metro Police Department is to determine “whether LMPD engages in a pattern or practice of violations of the Constitution or federal law.” The investigation, he said, “will assess whether LMPD engages in a pattern or practice of using unreasonable force, including with respect to people involved in peaceful expressive activities” as well as if it “engages in unconstitutional stops, searches and seizures” or “unlawfully executes search warrants on private homes.”

Taylor was killed in her apartment by LMPD officers in March 2020 while they were executing a search warrant. Two Louisville detectives connected with the incident were fired in January, five months after Officer Brett Hankison was similarly dismissed for blindly firing 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment during the search.

Under the probe, if the Justice Department concludes there is reasonable cause to believe there is a pattern or practice of constitutional or statutory violations, it will issue a public report and will “aim to work with the city and police department to arrive at a set of mutually agreeable steps” that can be taken to correct problems. If an agreement cannot be reached, the department has the authority to bring a civil lawsuit seeking injunctive relief to address violations.

Tenille Arts' heartbreak lights the flame for her first #1

Canadian newcomer Tenille Arts is celebrating the first number one of her career this week as “Somebody Like That” claims its place at the top of the country chart.

During the song’s 70-week climb to the pinnacle, Tenille performed the song on ABC’s The Bachelor, earned a spot on the prestigious New Faces show at Country Radio Seminar, and was nominated for Best New Female Artist by the Academy of Country Music.

But the uptempo, aspirational “Somebody Like That” can trace its beginnings back to Tenille’s own heartbreak.

“I had just gone through a breakup right before writing the song,” she tells ABC Audio. “So I had written a ton of breakup songs and was just kind of like, ‘Okay, I’m done writing those. I don’t want to write another sad song.'”

“You know, I want to write something hopeful about looking for love and just kind of the love that we look up to,” she continues, “whether it was our grandparents or our parents, and just kind of pull from that and and make it a realistic love.”

Luckily, co-writers Allison Cruz and Alex Kline were on board.

“You know, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies,” Tenille says of true love. “There’s gonna be ups and downs, and I think we really tried to paint that picture in this song…”

“You could be in a relationship, you could be heartbroken,” she adds, “and it all just kind of says the same message about not settling until you find something really great and until you find your person.”

Though she’s now a Nashville resident, Tenille was born and raised in Weyburn, a small prairie town in Saskatchewan.

“Somebody Like That”: Tenille Arts hits #1 on country radio

Tenille Arts has officially claimed her first #1 song in the U.S.

The native Canadian has topped the country charts with “Somebody Like That” after 70 weeks.

The song has accumulated several achievements, including being the first #1 country song to be written, performed and produced by an all-female team. The track was co-written by Tenille, with Allison Cruz and Alex Kline, the latter of whom also served as producer, making her the first solo female producer to have a #1 single at country radio.

Tenille is also the first Canadian artist to reach #1 on country radio in the U.S. in 14 years and the first female Canadian to do it since Terri Clark‘s 2004 hit, “Girls Lie Too.”

“Words cannot describe how I feel right now,” Tenille says in a statement, thanking country radio, her team and all her fans. “You've changed my life forever…I can't wait to continue to write this story together. Dreams really do come true!”

“Somebody Like That” is featured on Tenille’s latest album, Love, Heartbreak, & Everything in Between.

Luke Combs tells the story of “Joe” in unreleased song

Luke Combs debuted a new song, “Joe,” during his appearance on the Grand Ole Opry this weekend.

Standing in the sacred circle with a guitar in hand, Luke treated the audience to a previously unheard track that was written just days before the performance. The singer explained how friend and songwriter Erik Dylan had approached him with a partially complete song he co-write with James Slater, tentatively titled “Joe.”

“I just thought it was real awesome and we finished it together,” Luke explained. “Just hear me out and tell me what you think.”

He then launched into an acoustic rendition of the song about a Texaco worker named Joe, a recovering alcoholic who’s admittedly made a few “wrong turns” and done hard time, yet works hard to stay on course.

So here’s to good days/And better tomorrows/And a light at the end of the bottle,” Luke sang, to cheers from the crowd.

The superstar is currently working on his third studio album following the massive success of his sophomore installment, What You See Is What You Get. His current single, “Forever After All,” shot to #2 on the Billboard 200 last year and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It’s currently inside the top 15 on country radio.

Miranda Lambert on supporting female artists: “I take it close to the heart”

As Miranda Lambert‘s platform continues to grow, she hopes to be the kind of mentor and confidant for up-and-coming female artists she wishes she had at the start of her career.

Miranda tells Entertainment Weekly how she grew up idolizing such icons as Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, and later admiring the ladies of the 90s including Shania Twain, Faith Hill and Reba McEntire

But Miranda notes that after the 90s, she started noticing a downturn of female country artists, especially when she came onto the scene in 2005 with her debut album, Kerosene.

“There was a gap, and it was a big gap. I didn’t really have a lot of help,” she says of her early days touring as an opening act. “I only went on tour with men because the men were touring. I didn’t have anyone who I could call when I was having a meltdown or having PMS and having to go on stage. I wanted to talk to somebody.”

Miranda has now become that safe space for other artists, bringing an all-female lineup with her on her 2019 Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour that featured Maren Morris, Elle King and Ashley McBryde, plus Pistol Annies, Miranda’s trio with Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, and more.

“I didn’t have that, so now that I’ve gotten to this place, I want to be that for anyone that might need it,” says Miranda. “It’s a different game out there for girls, like, ‘you can try to find a decent shower to wash your hair every three shows.’ Sometimes, no one understands that but a female artist. I take it close to the heart to be there.”

Last month, Miranda picked up the Best Country Album Grammy for Wildcard.
