Blake Shelton takes a hard look at faith with “Bible Verses,” off his upcoming 'Body Language' album

Blake Shelton has dropped “Bible Verses,” off of his forthcoming Body Language album.

An intimate ballad backed by acoustic guitar, “Bible Verses” lays bare the struggles a person can face as they reconcile their faith with their own imperfections.

“…I keep praying for the day / That I can open up that Good Book / And Heaven don't look like it's out of reach / When it feels like those Apostles are giving me the gospel / And not the third degree,” Blake sings in the song's chorus. “I just want it to read like Bible verses / And not the Bible versus me.”

Before he shared the song on Friday, Blake teased it on social media with a close-up clip of the flipping pages of a Bible.

“Bible Verses” is the 12th and final track off of Body Language, which also includes Blake’s chart-topping duet with Gwen Stefani, “Nobody but You.” The album's title track is an as-yet-unreleased duet with former The Voice contestants The Swon Brothers, whom Blake mentored on his team during the show’s fourth season.

Body Language arrives in full on May 21.

“Somehow You Do”: Reba McEntire shares a powerful message in her new song and video

Reba McEntire on Friday shared her gripping new song, “Somehow You Do,” which is featured in the upcoming movie, Four Good Days.

As an accompaniment to the film's themes of recovery from addiction and the complex power of family bonds, “Somehow You Do” is an empowering and emotional message to anyone facing seemingly insurmountable odds. The song was written by Diane Warren, the award-winning songwriter who’s collaborated with Reba three times since the mid-'90s.

“It is a song about strength of the human spirit and no voice can convey that as much as Reba McEntire,” Diane points out. “She makes you feel with every note that that you might think you can't get through it, but somehow you will, and somehow you do.”

Reba also dropped a poignant music video for her new song, a cinematic clip that follows Reba as she walks along a highway, through a jaw-dropping Southern California desert landscape. Interspersed are clips from the movie itself, which stars Mila Kunis and Glenn Close. The video was directed by filmmaker Jon Avnet.

“It's an honor to get to sing a Diane Warren song anytime, but then to be associated with talented actors in a movie like Glenn and Mila is just icing on the cake,” Reba says. “Add in Jon Avnet directing the video and it just doesn't get much better!”

Four Good Days had its worldwide premiere at the 2020 Sundance Festival. It opens in select theaters on April 30.

Anti-Asian hate crime bill is passed by Senate

The Senate passed an anti-Asian hate crimes bill introduced amid a spate of violence spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act passed the chamber with a 94-1 vote on Thursday. Sen. Maize Hirono, D-Hawaii, introduced the bill last month along with Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., and Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y.

Hirono said in a statement: “Today’s historic, bipartisan vote on the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act sends a powerful message of solidarity to the [Asian American and Pacific Islander] community — that the United States Senate rejects anti-Asian hate. Now, I urge the House to swiftly pass this legislation so the bill can go to President [Joe] Biden to sign into law.”

The legislation seeks to combat a surge in incidents of physical, verbal and online attacks. The bill also directs state and local law enforcement to establish a method for hate crimes and incidents to be reported online in multiple languages, expand public education campaigns and have the secretary of Health and Human Services issue best-practice guidance to mitigate racially discriminatory language in describing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senate Republicans unveil $568B counteroffer on infrastructure package

On Thursday, Senate Republicans unveiled a $568 billion infrastructure package. The proposal focuses on roads and bridges, public transportation, railways, drinking water, wastewater, safety, waterways, airports, water storage, and broadband Internet.

The Republican proposal would cost $568 billion over five years, the bulk of which would go toward the Federal Highway Administration for roads and bridges. The Federal Transit Administration would receive $61 billion for public transit; rail would receive $20 billion; the Environmental Protection Agency would get $35 billion for drinking water and wastewater; $13 billion would go toward safety; $17 billion for ports and inland waterways; $44 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration for airports; and $65 billion for broadband infrastructure.

Meanwhile the Biden administration proposed raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28% to pay for its $2.2 trillion infrastructure package. The White House said the tax hike would fund the infrastructure plan within 15 years and would be combined with plans to discourage firms from listing tax havens as their address and offshoring profits. Biden indicated the 28% tax rate isn’t a hard figure and he’s willing to compromise to win approval for his overall infrastructure plan.

Jana Kramer and husband Mike Caussin to divorce after 6 years of marriage

37-year-old country music singer and actress Jana Kramer has filed for divorce from husband Mike Caussin. Kramer announced the news on social media that her six-year marriage to the former football player was over, posting on Instagram: “As I try to make sense of a reality I never wanted to believe could be possible again, those words have now become a reality. I’ve fought y’all. I’ve loved hard. I’ve forgiven. I’ve put the work in. I’ve given everything I have, and now I have nothing else to give. It’s time.”  She continued, “Please know that I still believe whole heartedly in marriage, love and rebuilding. I just can’t fight any longer. It’s time to heal. Thank you for all the love, heart and support, in many ways you have fought on this journey alongside me, and for that I am grateful. I’ll always encourage you to continue the good fight, but you can’t fight it alone.”

A source told People magazine that the divorce is due to infidelity, which was an ongoing issue in the marriage. The split comes just seven months after the couple released their book The Good Fight: Wanting to Leave, Choosing to Stay, and the Powerful Practice for Loving Faithfully. In the book, Caussin spoke candidly about sex addiction, infidelity, and seeking treatment following a string of affairs.  After numerous cheating scandals, Mike went to rehab to help treat his sex addiction in 2016, and the spouses had been working on their relationship ever since. Jana and Mike share two children together, Jolie Rae, 5, and Jace Joseph, 2.
