Half of all U.S. adults have received COVID-19 vaccination as of this week

Half of all adults in the United States are expected to have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 this week, it was announced at a briefing of the White House COVID-19 Response Team. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says almost 130 million U.S. adults are now fully vaccinated — or about 49.8% of the adult population. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden announced a goal of 70% of Americans having at least one dose by July 4.

CDC data shows that at least 25 states and Washington, D.C., have fully vaccinated at least half of their adult residents. Early on Tuesday, Moderna announced that its vaccine is safe and effective in children between the ages of 12 and 17. If approved by regulators next month, it would be the second coronavirus vaccine available in the United States to children.

Kristen Clarke confirmed as first black woman to lead Justice Department Civil Rights division

The Senate confirmed Kristen Clarke as the first Black woman to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights division on Tuesday with a 51-48 vote following an additional procedural step as Republicans objected to her nomination.

Clarke is a first-generation American whose parents immigrated from Jamaica West Indies, and she earned degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University School of Law before working as a trial attorney for the Civil Rights division’s criminal and voting sections during the George W. Bush administration. She also served as co-director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s voting rights group and most recently as president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

During her confirmation hearing, Clarke said she does not support defunding the police but does support “finding strategies to ensure that law enforcement can carry out their jobs more safely and effectively and channeling resources to emotional health treatment and other severely under-resourced areas.” Clarke’s nomination comes one year after George Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Biden pushed for Clarke’s confirmation last month when Chauvin was convicted on murder charges in Floyd’s death, saying she and Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta would “root out the unconstitutional policing and reform our criminal justice system.”

Blake Shelton says wedding to Gwen Stefani would be “classless” if he was the one planning it

Blake Shelton is a chart-topping country star, but he admits those skills don’t translate to wedding planning.

As Blake and fiancee Gwen Stefani prepare for their upcoming nuptials, Blake says it’s a good thing he’s not in charge of planning the event — especially the food.

“If I was picking our meal, it would just literally be everything fried,” he divulges to USA Today, mentioning chicken tenders and french fries as items he’d put on the menu. He jokes, “I think she knows that it would be a pretty classless wedding if I was in control.”

The “God’s Country” singer adds that Gwen is actively planning the wedding, much to his delight.

“I want her to do all of that stuff and handle it because it’s going to be great. She’s in the middle of planning the thing, and she’s always so mindful . of me,” Blake reveals. “She’s like, ‘Hey, I don’t want to just take this thing over.’ I know she’s having a blast doing it.”

Blake popped the question to his fellow The Voice coach in October 2020. He recently revealed that their first dance might be to “If You Leave,” the Orchestra Manoeuvres in the Dark, from the classic ’80s film Pretty In Pink.

Tenille Arts is feeling “open and vulnerable” as she preps new album

Though Tenille Arts is still reeling from the success of her hit single “Somebody Like That,” she’s looking ahead to her upcoming album.

Tenille made history when the song took a record 70 weeks to reach #1 on the country charts in April, making her the first Canadian female artist to achieve the feat since Terri Clark‘s “Girls Lie Too” in 2004.

“I don’t even know how this happened but I’m so grateful,” Tenille shares with People“I feel lucky that I had something so exciting and so positive to think about during the pandemic and throughout the last year. It’s been a very special time.”

The Canada-born singer recently released her follow-up single, “Back Then, Right Now,” and is working on her forthcoming album that follows 2020’s Love, Heartbreak, & Everything In Between.

“This album has me looking back, doing a lot of songs I wish I had when I was a teenager. It touches on a lot of life topics that I don’t think are touched on enough in country music,” she describes. “I’m just feeling very comfortable and open and vulnerable right now. This is some of my most favorite music I have ever made.”

Tenille will head out with Lady A on the trio’s What a Song Can Do Tour, launching July 29 at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.
