“Better Together”: Luke Combs returning to perform at 2022 Daytona 500

NASCAR has announced that Luke Combs will perform at The Great American Race next year ahead of the Daytona 500, marking the first time an artist has performed two years in a row at the iconic event.

The hitmaker made his Daytona 500 debut in 2021, but played for a limited capacity audience due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Restrictions at the Daytona International Speedway have since been lifted.

In a Twitter video, Luke shares memories of watching NASCAR races with his grandfather and cites his desire to play for a full audience at the famed race track as one of the reasons he wanted to come back.

“I never could’ve imagined playing before the Daytona 500…and while carrying on the tradition was something that I’ll never forget, it just wasn’t the same without a full house, and that’s why I’m excited to come back,” he expresses. “To feel the energy of the excitement, the atmosphere. To connect with the crowd and get them pumped up for The Great American Race, moments like this are what I live for and it’s why I do what I do.”

The 2022 Daytona 500 is scheduled for February 20.

FAA announces new fines for ‘unruly’ airline passengers who refuse to wear masks

Airline passengers who refuse to wear masks this year could face fines as high as $15,500, officials said on Monday.  The fines are part of an increased effort to crack down on what federal authorities described as “unruly and dangerous behavior” in the skies. The Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) made the announcement amid alcohol bans aimed at calming in-flight tensions and thousands of reports of out-of-control passengers. The FAA said as of Monday it had received 2,800 such reports since Jan. 1, with 3/4 of those reported refusing to comply with federal mask rules, it said.

The steepest proposed fine, $15,500, involved a passenger on a Feb. 5 JetBlue flight between Florida and Las Vegas who ignored at least 10 requests from flight attendants to wear a mask over his nose and his mouth. Other potential fines, from $10,500 to $7,500, were proposed for a passenger on another JetBlue flight who was alleged to have become “disruptive” after a flight attendant asked her to wear a mask, a passenger on an Alaska flight who was alleged to have smoked an e-cigarette in the restroom and refused to wear a mask in the cabin and a passenger on a Southwest flight who also refused to wear a mask.

In addition, passengers who assault, threaten or interfere with aircraft crew members could face fines of $35,000 on top of criminal charges.

Authorities say that Illinois chemical plant fire could last for days, forcing 100s of home evacuations

Dozens of homes in northern Illinois were evacuated Monday after A massive fire destroyed a chemical plant in northern Illinois on Monday forcing dozens of evacuations and producing smoke so thick that it could be seen for miles. Fire officials in Rockton, Ill., issued a mandatory evacuation order affecting about 150 homes near a Lubrizol Corp., facility in the town of about 7,600 along the Wisconsin border 100 miles northwest of Chicago.

The evacuation was ordered moments after first responders arrived at the scene at 7 a.m. to find the Chemtool facility completely consumed by flames as a thick, black plume of smoke spread hundreds of feet overhead. About 70 plant employees were safely evacuated from the facility while one firefighter sustained minor injuries. According to Rockton Fire Chief Kirk Wilson:  “The fire was through the roof when we arrived, and the cause remains unknown at this point. Everything is still under investigation.” There was no danger to people at ground level from contaminants, the chief added.

Emergency officials are opting to let the fire burn out rather than douse it with water because of possible contamination from the runoff reaching the nearby Rock River.

Darius Rucker admits son Jack doesn't introduce him to new music: “I can't handle it”

Darius Rucker is close with his youngest son, Jack, but that doesn’t mean they have the same taste in music.

The crossover country star shares that during a recent trip to the golf course, he allowed his 16-year-old son to be in charge of the music during the drive, but admits he was not a fan of the selections.

“He plays six songs as we’re driving to the golf course, and we get to the golf course and I turn to him and I said, ‘Jack, that’s 24 minutes of my life I’m never going to get back. Every song you played sucked,” Darius laughs with his signature giggle. “‘I don’t ever want to hear any of those songs again as long as I live.'”

Apparently, this isn’t the first time Jack has tried to introduce modern music to his famous father. The “Wagon Wheel” singer says his son has also played him songs by Grammy-nominated rapper Travis Scott that he had a hard time grasping.

“Jack definitely doesn’t turn me [onto music], he tries, but I keep telling him…he was playing some Travis Scott or somebody the other day and I said, ‘this kid is not speaking English. You can’t tell me this is English. I do not believe it. He’s not speaking English.’ I just couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘that’s not English,'” Darius adds with a chuckle. “But they’re awesome. Jack definitely doesn’t bring me music. I can’t handle it.”

On the country music front, Darius scored his ninth #1 single earlier this year with “Beers and Sunshine,” while his current single, “My Masterpiece,” is climbing the charts.
