Darius Rucker says Kane Brown has the “it factor” on TIME100 list

Kane Brown has earned a spot TIME magazine’s prestigious TIME100 list, honoring the 100 most influential people of 2021. Darius Rucker penned the touching tribute to Kane.

“Kane Brown has that unquantifiable ‘it’ factor,” Darius praised. “He's so laid-back and doesn't take himself too seriously, but he also really cares about his craft and other people. And when it comes to his music, he can do that low, cool, borderline-rapping thing, and then he sings and his vocal ability just blows you away.”

Darius made great strides as a Black man in country music, strides that Darius sees Kane also achieving.

“I'm sure there are kids looking up to Kane right now just like when I looked up at Charley Pride,” Darius says. “One of the most pivotal moments of my career was when Charley shared some of the lessons he learned over the years with me … Kane is setting the bar so high for the next generation. I hope kids see him and now think, ‘I?can do that.'”

StubHub agrees to refund tickets to concerts canceled due to COVID-19

Good news for customers of StubHub: You’re getting your money back.

The ticket resale platform has agreed to give refunds to customers who purchased tickets to events canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. When concerts and other events first started being canceled, StubHub initially stopped honoring its refund guarantee, instead offering customers credits to be used for future events.

On Wednesday, several state attorneys general announced a settlement with StubHub that forces the ticket reseller to reverse the policy and honor refunds for tickets purchased prior to March 25, 2020. The settlement also requires StubHub to be more forthcoming about its refund policies and honor those policies when events are cancelled.

The company will be able to avoid paying a multi-million-dollar penalty if it promptly coughs up the refunds owed to customers. Instead of refunds, StubHub had tried to offer credits of $120% of ticket purchase prices for future events.

The multistate investigation began after several customer complaints, and Stubhub's “lack of responsiveness” to the inquiries, the attorneys general said.

Now, the bad news: The settlement only involves StubHub customers in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Scotty McCreery is “Damn Strait” about his love of country music

Scotty McCreery is sharing another song from his upcoming Same Truck album. The American Idol alum dropped “Damn Strait,” one of only two songs he did not write on his new record.

“Every now and then you hear a song that sounds so much like you,” Scotty says of the song, which was written by Trent Tomlinson and Jim Collins. “I grew up as a huge George Strait fan, and when I heard this song, I raised my hand to say, I want this one.' Every country fan has a George Strait story, and everyone has a memory attached to their favorite songs.”

It was George, along with a couple of other country music legends, who inspired Scotty to become a singer.

“The first country music concert I ever went to was George Strait, Reba [McEntire] and Lee Ann Womack,” Scotty says. “When I saw that show, I said, I'm gonna do that one day.'”

Same Truck will be released on Friday, September 17. Scotty’s current single from the album, “You Time,” is currently in the top 5.

Justice Department restricts use of chokeholds and ‘no-knock’ warrants

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Tuesday that the Justice Department will tighten restrictions on when its agencies can use chokeholds, carotid restraints and no-knock entries. Garland said: “Building trust and confidence between law enforcement and the public we serve is central to our mission at the Justice Department. The limitations implemented today on the use of ‘chokeholds,’ ‘carotid restraints’ and ‘no-knock’ warrants, combined with our recent expansion of body-worn cameras to DOJ’s federal agents, are among the important steps the department is taking to improve law enforcement safety and accountability.”

Under the new guidelines, federal law enforcement agents will be prohibited from using chokeholds and carotid restraints unless the use of deadly force is authorized. The Justice Department allows such force “when the officer has a reasonable belief that the subject of such force poses an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury to the officer or to another person.”  The new Justice Department policies also limits the use of no-knock entries to the execution of warrants in situations where agents believing knocking and announcing before entry would create threat of physical violence.

The use of chokeholds has been under scrutiny after the 2014 death of New York City man Eric Garner, who died of compression of his neck and chest and his prone positioning on the ground as New York City Police officer Daniel Pantaleo held him in a chokehold on the ground. Garner, who had asthma, repeatedly told the police “I can’t breathe.”

Thomas Rhett racks up 18 number ones, after learning to dismiss any fear he might “Crash and Burn”

This week, Thomas Rhett claims his 18th #1, as “Country Again” tops the chart. While his last dozen singles have made it to #1, that wasn’t always the case.

“Minus the sunglasses, I wanted to be Eric Church,” he admits. “I used Eric’s producer. I tried to sing like him… My first two singles… did not do anything at all. My first two number ones… were songs that my dad wrote…”

“I put this song out called ‘Make Me Wanna,’ which was very strange to the radio at that point in time,” he continues. “It was like seventies-disco-meets-country-lyric. I was like, ‘Should I put this song out?’ My manager Virginia said, ‘If you’re okay with this song dying at number 40, then that should be your gut feeling and you should go with it.'”

That, it turns out, made the difference.

“It sat at 40 for like 20 weeks,” TR recalls, “and then all of the sudden, it started to catch. And then it became a hit, and that gave me the confidence to put a song out like ‘Crash and Burn.'”

“And then [it] kind of changed this whole trajectory for me,” he reflects. “I was in this lane, and then all of the sudden, I kind of veered left. And it kind of just gave me this confidence to put out songs that may or may not have worked.”

Ultimately, TR hopes he’s helped country’s next generation.

“I followed my gut on a lot of the releases,” he declares. “And I hope that… made a way for a lot of other artists to be able to put some of these songs out… as well, because people like Eric Church and Brantley Gilbert and Jason Aldean did that for me.”

Senate Democrats introduce new voting rights bill

On Tuesday, a group of eight Senate Democrats introduced their latest version of a sweeping election reform bill to counter the record-number of voting restrictions that have passed in GOP-led states, which they say make it harder for minorities and low-income Americans to cast a ballot.

Now known as the ‘Freedom to Vote Act,’ the modified bill is a compromise after the previous For The People Act failed to pass in the Senate last June. The new bill was crafted by a group that included moderate Sen Joe Manchin, a key swing vote, after he opposed an earlier version of the legislation charging that it was too broad and lacked bipartisan support. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday on the Senate floor that he intends to hold a vote to proceed to the compromise measure as early as next week, which would require 60 senators to support advancing to the bill. It’s unclear whether Democrats can garner the support of 10 Republicans, though Schumer said that Manchin has been discussing the bill with GOP senators.

The bill would aim to promote voter confidence and access by “requiring a uniform national standard for states that requires identification for in-person voting, and allowing voters to present a broad set of identification cards and documents in hard copy and digital form,” a summary of the measure says.

Eric Church shares behind the scenes video from ‘The Gather Again’ tour

Eric Church is sharing a behind the scenes video for his first in-the-round tour, titled ‘The Gather Again’ Tour. Church is hitting the road this week to support his triple album, “Heart & Soul,” which features the CMA nominated Single of the Year and Song of the Year, “Hell Of A View”.  ‘The Gather Again’ Tour kicks-off this Friday, September 17th in Lexington, KY at the Rupp Arena and will wrap up on May 20th of next year at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Church said of his very first in-the-round tour, “I’ve never played a stage like this in my career… I’ve never seen anybody play one like this. There’s really no front… It’s kind of like a cage match. I mean once we get out there the crowd is everywhere. They’re behind you, they’re on the sides, and I love that…. The reason it’s called The Gather Again Tour is we want people on top of us, and they will be.”

Thomas Rhett earns his 18th #1 single with ‘Country Again’

Thomas Rhett has earned his 18th No. 1 single with “Country Again” on both the Billboard Country and Mediabase/Country Aircheck Charts. The song also marks the superstar’s 12th consecutive No. 1 hit, making it the longest current active streak on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck Chart.

Said Rhett: “This song is so special to me, because every line really is autobiographical. But it’s also a song about centering yourself and reconnecting with the things that are truly important to you; which is different for all of us. Being able to share this song with fans each night on the road finally and seeing how it’s resonating with them is something I will never take for granted.”

Rhett recently launched his headlining ‘The Center Point Road Tour’ with special guests Cole Swindell and Gabby Barrett. Tickets previously purchased will be honored accordingly for the rescheduled dates due to the pandemic.
