Midland's Mark Wystrach stares into 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' this Friday

Back before he found success with MidlandMark Wystrach was an actor and model, starring on the NBC soap, Passions

This Friday, the “Drinkin’ Problem” hitmaker again steps in front of the camera, taking a pivotal role in the new film, The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

“I play a character named Gary Paxton,” Mark explains, “who is kind of a little-known, very large character in the music world. He had very young success in his career as an artist and as a songwriter.”

“I guess he's best known for producing and writing a song called ‘Monster Mash,'” Mark continues, “and probably even better known for ending up being Tammy Faye Bakkers producer on multiple albums of hers that were recorded at their compound out in North Carolina.”

With Jessica Chastain taking the lead role and Andrew Garfield playing Tammy’s husband, Jim Bakker, Mark admits it would’ve been easy to psyche himself out.

“You find yourself suddenly, in the back of your head saying, ‘Wow, I'm the only person in this room right now on the set without an Academy Award,'” he confesses. “And that could be intimidating or you can just jump in and have fun.”

“And it was really easy with Jessica and Andrew and [director] Michael [Showalter],” Mark reflects. “They're so gracious and so easy to work with that you just kinda jump in and go with the flow, and you just kind of swim in the river. And it was a blast, an amazing experience.”

“And I think the film — which I’ve had a chance to see — turned out brilliantly,” he adds.

You can check out Mark’s performance when The Eyes of Tammy Faye opens on Friday.

Meanwhile, Midland’s new EP, The Last Resort, is out now, featuring their single, “Sunrise Tells the Story.”

Sec. of State Anthony Blinken defends Afghanistan withdrawal at House hearing

In an appearance before a House committee Monday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan. Blinken testified in front of the House foreign affairs committee via video link during a hearing entitled “Afghanistan 2001-2021: Evaluating the Withdrawal and U.S. Policies.”

In his opening statement, Blinken reiterated that the scenes of chaos at the Kabul International Airport, where thousands of Afghans sought to flee from the Taliban, could not have been predicted. “Even the most pessimistic assessments did not predict that government forces in Kabul would collapse while U.S. forces remained,” Blinken said. “As General (Mark) Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said, ‘Nothing I or anyone else saw indicated a collapse of this army and this government in 11 days.”

He added that the State Department was “able to draw down our embassy and move our remaining personnel to the airport within 48 hours. And the military — placed on stand-by by the president — was able to secure the airport and start the evacuation within 72 hours.” The result was “one of the biggest airlifts in history, with 124,000 people evacuated to safety,” said Blinken, followed by massive efforts by U.S. personnel to house and process tens of thousands of Afghan refugees.

The House committee hearing is just the first among what is expected to be a series of congressional probes of the Afghanistan withdrawal this week. Blinken will also appear before the Senate foreign relations panel on Tuesday.

Why Eric Church says plotting his Gather Again Tour is “maddening”

Eric Church is offering fans an inside look at his upcoming Gather Again Tour.

In a behind-the-scenes video, the singer shows off his in-the-round stage at rehearsals in Pennsylvania, setting up shop on a massive stage in the center of the venue for the first time in his career.

“The hardest thing I’ve done thus far in my career is this set list,” Eric admits, explaining how adding the 28 new songs from his three-part album, Heart & Soul, to an already packed song roster was a challenge. However, the singer is still “committed” to changing the set list each night so the audience gets an entirely new show than the one before.

“We’re still going to play the different set, we’re going to give people different experiences. It has been maddening,” he declares.

The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year is also seen rehearsing his current single, “Heart on Fire,” the chart-topping hit “Hell of a View,” and “Stick That in Your Country Song.”

“It’s the most musical we’ve ever been. I think to see the way the new music happens in the show is something that I’m excited to see,” he continues, adding that he’s reimagining songs he’s played throughout his career. “There’s going to be a lot of songs that fans aren’t going to recognize at first. I think it’s fun after this many years to change it up and make it about music and make it musical,” he describes. “I’m just excited to see the reaction.”

Eric launches the Gather Again Tour on Friday in Lexington, Kentucky. The hefty tour schedule runs into 2022, concluding with a set at New York’s Madison Square on May 20.
