Old Dominion's unlikely, unplanned visit to the “Lonely Side of Town” with the Empress of Soul

When Kenny Rogers tried to record “Islands in the Stream” solo, it just didn’t work. But it wasn’t long before he and producer/writer Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees suspected Dolly Parton might be what was missing. She happened to be nearby in Los Angeles, and a country/pop classic was born.

Last year when CMA and ACM Group of the Year Old Dominion traveled to North Carolina to write and record their fourth album, a similar thing happened on a song called “Lonely Side of Town.”

“We weren’t thinking about having a collaboration on it,” lead singer Matthew Ramsey tells ABC Audio. “We had written it, and we’d tracked it, and were just listening to it and thought, like ‘Man it would be cool to have somebody like Gladys Knight on this thing.'”

“It’s this weird mix of like Motown and the Eagles kind of in one song,” he explains, “and we could just hear her on it. And when we said her name, somebody was like, ‘She lives in Asheville… right down the street from us.'”

“So it was just kinda like this moment of ‘This has to be meant to be then,'” Matthew remembers.

From there, it wasn’t long before the 77-year-old “Midnight Train to Georgia” hitmaker arrived.

“We talked to the studio manager and she was like, ‘Oh, yeah. I’m great friends with them, I’ll call her,'” Matthew recalls in minor disbelief. “And so she called her and Gladys was like, ‘I love those guys. I don’t even need to hear the song. I’ll be a part of it.'”

“So it was amazing,” he laughs.

You can hear Matthew and the soul legend contemplate a trip to the “Lonely Side of Town” when Time, Tequila, & Therapy arrives October 8.

CDC advisory panel votes to recommend Pfizer COVID-19 boosters for those 65 and older, or considered high-risk

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s independent advisory panel has unanimously voted to recommend booster doses of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for people aged 65 and older, along with long-term care facility residents, at least six months after their second dose. The panel also voted to recommend booster doses for people between the ages of 50 and 64 years old who have underlying medical conditions, at least six months out from their second dose.

The CDC’s recommendation follows authorization Wednesday night from the Food and Drug Administration, who approved the third shot for anyone 65 or older, as well as for people as young as 18, if they have a medical condition that puts them at risk of severe COVID-19 or if they work a frontline job that makes it more likely that they would get infected.

The CDC advisory panel’s vote follows weeks of debate amongst top health experts over who should get a booster dose and when.Advisory panelists voted to recommend the booster shot due to data showing the gradually waning immunity from the vaccine impacting the elderly and high risk groups.

Regarding Tenpenny, RaeLynn added: “I’ve known Mitchell since I moved into town. We’ve had so many fun memories of going down [to] Printers Alley and singing at the karaoke bar. The first person I thought of who could pull this song off was Mitchell. Elton John and Charlie Puth have released a new song, “After All,” off Elton’s upcoming album of collaborations, ‘The Lockdown Sessions,’ due out October 22nd. ‘The Lockdown Sessions’ also features collaborations with Dua Lipa, Eddie Vedder, Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X, Gorillaz, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks, Young Thug, and Nicki Minaj.

John says in a statement: “With ‘After All’ Charlie and I were in the studio, just the two of us. He’s got a little home set up with his keyboards, synths, and Pro Tools. I played electric piano and actually wrote the song all the way through and then Charlie wrote the lyrics pretty quickly. He’s incredibly quick, Charlie. We just had an amazing chemistry in the studio.”

Puth added, “As a songwriter, I have admired and looked up to Elton John my entire life. It is truly incredible how the melodies and chords seem to come to him instantly whenever he sits down at the piano. I got to witness that firsthand when we wrote this song together. He is world-class and the true definition of a musical genius. Being a part of his musical journey is a dream come true.”

Take a listen to “After All” – here.   John and Puth are both set to perform at the upcoming Global Citizen Live event in Paris, which will air on September 25th. The Weeknd hit with copyright lawsuit over ‘Call Out My Name’

The Weeknd, along with collaborators Nicolas Jaar and Frank Dukes, are being sued by Suniel Fox and Henry Strange, who make up the group Epikker. The lawsuit accuses the Weeknd, Jaar and Dukes of plagiarizing their 2015 song “Vibeking” for his 2018 single, “Call Out My Name.”

The suit alleges, “Both works are in a minor key. Both works are in a 6/8 meter that is less common in popular music. Both works are played at a similar tempo. And both works use features of electronica, ambience, pop, hip-hop, rock, and R&B to achieve a particular atmospheric and melancholic sound.”  Fox and Strange allege they were in correspondence with the Weeknd’s DJ and engineer PNDA, who told them that he wasn’t going to credit them on the song. The two artists seek all profits that “Call Out My Name” has amassed, along with legal fees, and want the Weeknd blocked from performing the song until the case is settled. Universal Music Group and other entities that back the Weeknd were also named in the suit.

“Call Out My Name” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and amassed over 700 million YouTube views and 836 million Spotify streams. Fox and Strange’s “Vibeking” is currently unavailable on any streaming services.

Darius Rucker's biggest accomplishment might be changing country music

When Darius Rucker first announced that he was focusing on a career in country music, after years spent fronting Hootie & the Blowfish, it wasn’t an easy transition. The South Carolina native admits that it was hard getting radio to play his music at first, only because of the color of his skin.

“When I came to Nashville 14 years ago, I was going into the radio stations and being told that they didn’t think it was going to work because I was African American,” he tells The Tennessean. “That was tough. But I was glad to get the truth, and it was what it was.”

Now, with numerous chart-topping singles to his credit, and several  Black artists joining him on the charts, including Kane BrownJimmie Allen and Mickey Guyton, Darius is optimistic about the future of country music.

“Country music has this stigma of rebel flags and racism, and that’s changing,” Darius says. “I think it’s changing drastically. And I’m just glad. I hope I’m remembered as one of the people that tried to fight that, and one of the reasons that changed.”
