“Craig is a real human”: Walker Hayes introduces fans to the man who inspired a song and his new book

On Country Stuff The Album, Walker Hayes brings back a new version of one of his most important older songs: “Craig,” a track that originally appeared on his 2017 project, boom.

Back when he first released it, “Craig” was a fan-favorite, and even led to the foundation of Walker's Be a Craig Fund. The song tells a special story about the singer's friendship with a man he met at church, who helped him navigate his then-nascent relationship with his faith.

Craig also went above and beyond to help out Walker's family, gifting him a minivan when he was too broke to buy a vehicle with enough seatbelts for all six of his kids.

It's a great story, and a true one. On social media, Walker recently introduced his fans to Craig Cooper, the real-life person who inspired the song. Craig joins Walker in the video, while they're in the middle of playing a family game of Horse — or, as they call it, “Craig” — in a driveway.

These days, Craig and Walker are more than just buddies: They're also neighbors. The pair are also working together on a new book, Glad You're Here, which will be out in May.

Eric Church is opening a BBQ joint and music venue in downtown Nashville

Move over, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Dierks Bentley: There's a new country star-owned bar coming to downtown Nashville.

Eric Church is planning to open a new hot spot called Chief's. Occupying the spot formerly owned by John Rich-owned Cotton Eyed Joe — which Rich and his partners sold for $24.5 million late last year, per the Tennessean — Chief's is due to open in 2023.

The country superstar says opening his own bar is the “culmination of catching” a dream that he's been chasing ever since he first moved to town.

“Like everything else we do in our career, I wouldn't even attempt a project like this if I didn't think it would be the best, so that's what Chief's will be: The best,” he explains.

Named for Eric's 2011 Chief album, and the nickname that fans have given him, the singer's new spot is personal on every level. Drawing on his Carolina roots, Eric's enlisting James Beard Award winner and Charleston native Rodney Scott to bring his Whole Hog BBQ to a rooftop restaurant at the top of Chief's six-story building.

Plus, the bar and restaurant will have a designated seated music venue, ready to host ticketed shows. That's a big difference from many of the other spots on Nashville's neon-splattered Lower Broadway, known for its boisterous, packed, standing-room-only honky tonks.

Chief's is the latest in a fast-growing trend of country stars opening up their own bars. Florida Georgia Line and Miranda Lambert are two more who've gotten into the bar and restaurant game in recent years.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire at end of term

Justice Stephen Breyer will step down from the Supreme Court at the end of the current term. Breyer is one of the three remaining liberal justices, and his decision to retire after more than 27 years will allow President Biden to appoint a successor who could maintain the current 6-3 split between conservative and liberal justices. CNN reports that Breyer does not plan to leave until a new nominee is confirmed to the nine-member court.

Breyer, at 83, is the court’s eldest member. He was appointed by former President Bill Clinton and joined the court in 1994. Prior to that he served on the 1st Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals for from 1980 to 1994, the last four years of which he was chief judge. He was nominated to the appellate court by former President Jimmy Carter. Prior to his judicial career, Breyer served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg and as a special assistant to the attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. During his career he also worked on the Warren Commission and the Watergate Special Prosecution Force.

Liberal activists have urged Breyer to retire while Democrats hold both the White House and the Senate; an appointment by Biden could keep Breyer’s seat on the liberal side of the court for years or decades to come. President Biden declined to comment, saying that he will leave it to Breyer to formally announce his retirement. White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted saying, “It has always been the decision of any Supreme Court Justice if and when they decide to retire, and how they want to announce it, and that remains the case today.”

During his 2020 campaign, Biden pledged to select a Black woman to be his first nominee to the Supreme Court should there be an opening. White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters Biden plans to stick to that promise: “The president has stated and reiterated his commitment to nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court and certainly stands by that. For today, again, I’m just not going to be able to say anything about any specifics, until, of course, Justice Breyer makes any announcement, should he decide to make an announcement.”  Among likely contenders are U.S. Circuit Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, a former Breyer law clerk; and Leondra Kruger, a justice on California’s Supreme Court.

One body found, 38 missing amid Coast Guard search after boat capsizes off Florida

One body has been recovered as a search continued Wednesday for 38 other passengers on a boat that capsized in the northern Straits of Florida.  The boat, carrying 40 people, left the Bahamas in a suspected human smuggling attempt, the U.S. Coast Guard said.  Officials say that a man was found clinging to the overturned hull of the boat Tuesday morning.

During a news conference Wednesday morning, a U.S. Coast Guard official said search and rescue crews are in a race against time to find any survivors. Capt. Jo-Ann F. Burdian said that finding the other migrants alive is their highest priority: “It is dire. The longer they remain in the water … exposed to the marine environment … with every moment that passes, it becomes much more dire and more unlikely that survivors will be found.”

The 25-foot capsized boat was discovered around 8 a.m. on Tuesday roughly 40 miles east of Florida’s Fort Pierce Inlet. A commercial tug-in barge operator radioed in that one survivor was found clinging to the hull of the overturned vessel.   The man said he was part of a group of 40 people who left the island of Bimini in the Bahamas on Saturday evening in what the maritime security agency suspects was a human smuggling operation The man said they capsized shortly thereafter, and none of them were wearing life jackets.

The survivor was brought to a hospital for symptoms of dehydration and sun exposure. Capt. Burdian wouldn’t provide more details about him, saying he’s now in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security. Burdian said searchers saw indications of more victims, but no more bodies yet. “The aircraft have reported items in the debris field that’s consistent with a number of people being on the vessel,” she said.

Breland's glad he didn't know Dierks Bentley's “Beers on Me” was going to be a single when he wrote his verse

Breland's got his first-ever country radio single — not to mention, his first-ever top-twenty and rising hit — in the form of “Beers on Me,” his Dierks Bentley-led collaboration that also includes Hardy.

Dierks, Hardy and a few other co-writers penned the song at a writing retreat in Colorado, but when Dierks asked Breland to be a part of it, the up-and-comer asked if he could add a verse of his own.

“I wanted to be able to add some of my own flavor to it, so I was really glad that they were cool with me trying to write my own thing,” Breland remembers. “And it came together really fast. It might have been, like, 10 minutes, 15 minutes or so.”

His verse was a hit with his duet partners, and “Beers on Me” became a big song for Dierks: He sent it to country radio, and borrowed its title for his tour.

But that day in the studio, when Breland asked to make changes to “Beers on Me,” he had no idea just how important the song was. Looking back on it, he says, that was a good thing.

“You know, I've never had a song at country radio before,” the singer points out. “So it was a really big opportunity for me. I'm glad I didn't know that when I was writing the verse. Then I probably would've been second, third-guessing myself.”

Breland's currently on the road with Russell Dickerson for the All Yours, All Night Tour, which kicked off on Tuesday in New York City.

Post Malone announces new album “Twelve Carat Toothache”

Two years after Post Malone put out his chart-topping album “Hollywood’s Bleeding”, Malone revealed to Billbord that his next album will be titled “Twelve Carat Toothache.”

As of now, an official release date hasn’t been revealed — however, Malone did note that this will be his shortest album to date, clocking in at 45 minutes.  Said Post: “Trying to shove 20 to 25 songs, it doesn’t work. Talking to the label [it’s like], ‘Oh, if you have less songs, you’re not going to stream as much,’ but the whole thing is that you don’t want to compromise your art and your gut vibe on anything.”

Earlier this month, Malone’s manager Dre London wrote on Instagram that Post’s label, Republic, was holding up the album — possibly over the album’s length. Post explained: “I’ve made a lot of compromises, especially musically, but now I don’t feel like I want to anymore. I don’t need a No. 1; that doesn’t matter to me no more, and at a point, it did.”

Grimes releases music video for her new song “Shinigami Eyes” featuring BLACKPINK’s Jennie

After teasing her new song “Shinigami Eyes” on social media, Grimes has dropped the new video for her latest single featuring BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

Grimes told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe in an interview: “Shinigami Eyes” was a “label executive decision song” that didn’t fit into the “space opera” narrative of her next project, a planned double album.  “Shinigami Eyes” was inspired by the cult Japanese anime and film Death Note — the song’s title is a reference to the blood-red eyes in that story — about a high school student who discovers a magical book that allows him to kill anyone whose name he writes on the pages.

“Shinigami Eyes” is the follow-up to Grimes’ Dec. 2021 single “Player of Games“; it’s unclear if either of the two singles will wind up on her upcoming double album.  Grimes said of the double LP, which currently has the title Book 1“I think I decided that the record needs to be a double album. I made a bunch of stuff and I just want to make a bunch more stuff. There’s just more kind of sonic, conceptual ideas that I think need to get done to make everything make more sense. And we kind of have two album covers and it seems like a waste to throw on one of them away.”
