World leaders increase sanctions on Russia in an attempt to stop Putin’s attack on Ukraine

The Group of Seven economic powers announced economic sanctions on Thursday in an attempt to stop President Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine. Thursday’s measures did not target the Russian president personally, but Biden said sanctioning Putin is “on the table”. The US move comes after Russia launched a large-scale military operation in Ukraine late on Wednesday.

European countries began imposing sanctions on Russia over the invasion on Thursday, with the United Kingdom announcing measures targeting dozens of Russian banks, businesses and wealthy elites, and banning Russia’s national airline Aeroflot from the country’s airspace.

At an afternoon news conference from the White House on Thursday, President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia, vowing to impose a “severe cost” on the country for its invasion of Ukraine. Biden voiced support for Ukraine and said the sanctions package will limit international trade with Moscow and penalize Russian President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. “Putin is the aggressor; Putin chose this war, and now he and his country will bear the consequences,” Biden said. The sanctions target four Russian banks that hold more than $1 trillion in assets, including the country’s largest bank, Sberbank. Biden also said the United States will halt more than half of Russia’s tech imports and sanction more Kremlin elites.

Ukrainian officials have said fighting also is taking place on the ground, with Russian forces on Thursday capturing the former nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, in the country’s north. Biden said American forces will not fight in Ukraine, which is not a NATO member, underscoring that the U.S. had sent additional troops to Europe over the past weeks, announcing the deployment of forces already on the continent to “NATO’s eastern flank allies, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania”.

“Keep an ace up your sleeve”: Luke Bryan explains what it takes to make it as an 'American Idol' finalist

The new season of American Idol kicks off this month, complete with a whole new batch of talented stars in the making.

But what does it take to make it to the final rounds of the competition? Judge Luke Bryan says it's all about keeping the audience on their toes.

“To make it all the way to the finals in American Idol is to constantly keep an ace up your sleeve,” the country superstar explains. “Constantly keep growing and surprising us and constantly being true to yourself — but surprising the viewers at home.”

This season of the show marks American Idol's 20th anniversary, which means that the competition is fiercer than ever. This time around, Luke and his fellow judges kick things off by awarding the most talented contestants with a platinum ticket that allows them to sit out the next round of performances and go straight to Hollywood Week. But those platinum ticket holders will be held to an even higher standard: They'll have to quickly adapt and evolve, delivering a blockbuster performance each time they step on stage.

“Keep everybody guessing, keep everybody on their toes,” Luke advises. “Once we think we got you figured out, then show us that we don't have you figured out.”

Season 20 of American Idol premieres Sunday, February 27 on ABC.

“Fancy Like” the NHL: Walker Hayes gears up for a 2022 Stadium Series performance

Walker Hayes has signed on to help kick off a partnership between the NHL and TikTok. The singer will take the stage ahead of the 2022 NHL Stadium Series game later this month.

He's performing on the TikTok Tailgate Stage at the NHL Pregame, and his set will be available to watch on TikTok beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 26.

Of course, it'll include his breakout hit, “Fancy Like,” which went viral on TikTok after the singer posted a clip of himself dancing to it with his teenage daughter, Lela. Since then, the video has amassed over 34.9 million views on the app, and “Fancy Like” skyrocketed to the top of the country charts.

Ahead of his performance, Walker told NHL.com that he's still not used to his newfound stardom.

“Just being involved in something of this caliber is still very new to me,” he pointed out. “Fancy Like' — the song that exploded my career — is not even a year old. For [me], my wife and kids, especially playing a show like this involved with the NHL, these are dreams coming true for us.”

“Fancy Like” is on Walker's new Country Stuff: The Album.

Thomas Rhett hilariously enlists the help of a new PR expert, Rodney, to help promote his new album

Any press is good press, right? Maybe not, Thomas Rhett discovers, in a hilarious skit he posted to social media this week.

Thomas is gearing up for the release of his Where We Started album, so of course, he needs publicity. In this goofy clip, the singer “hires” a new PR expert named Rodney, who coaches TR through some unorthodox approaches to selling his record.

For example, Rodney — who bears a resemblance to Dwight from The Office, with a personality to match — encourages Thomas to get on the phone and cold-call potential album buyers. First up on the phone is Brent, who apparently previously bought pool chlorine from Rodney, and who has no clue who Thomas Rhett is.

“Hey buddy,” Rodney says, hopping on the phone when he sees that TR isn't impressing this potential customer. “He's gonna make you a custom monogrammed duck call, Brent.”

“Brent, I can't promise you that,” the singer adds drily.

TR might not make you a custom duck call, but you can pre-order his new album, Where We Started, now. Its lead single, “Slow Down Summer,” is out now, and the full project will drop in April.
