Lady A's Charles Kelley puts his spin on “Georgia on My Mind” for an ESPN The Masters ad

Charles Kelley hails his home state in a new rendition of “Georgia on My Mind,” which appears in an ESPN commercial leading up to this year's Masters golf tournament.

The Masters tournament takes place in Charles' hometown, Augusta, adding extra meaning to his performance. “Growing up in Augusta I have been going to the Masters for as long as I can remember, so this was a special full-circle moment for me,” the singer notes.

“Georgia on My Mind” dates back to 1930, but it's most closely associated with Ray Charles — another Georgia native — who released it as part of his The Genius Hits the Road album in 1960. Ray is best known as a blues, soul and pop singer, but he's got strong country ties, too, thanks to his 1962 Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music album. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year.

“No one can sing this song like Ray Charles,” Charles acknowledges, “but I hope I did him justice and I can't wait to get back home and experience the Masters in person.”

Charles is also an avid golfer who multiple tournaments as a preteen before his focus shifted to music. But he still loves to unwind on the golf course, especially with fellow country stars like Darius Rucker and Jake Owen.

This year's Masters tournament will begin on April 7.

Carrie Underwood delivers a “different kind of revenge song” with the spooky new “Ghost Story”

Carrie Underwood made good on several new music teases Friday morning, releasing her new single, “Ghost Story.”

Carrie's known for songs about taking revenge after a breakup, with the most famous example being her crossover chart-topper from 2005, “Before He Cheats.” Her newest release, though, is a more understated tale of getting back at an ex. It's “a different take on a revenge song,” the singer explains.

“Instead of smashing headlights, this scorned lover is letting her ex know that she will continue to haunt him, no matter how hard he tries to forget her,” she goes on to say.

Though this spooky new single is different than anything fans have heard from Carrie before, she's long had a penchant for ghost stories in her downtime. The singer has often said that she's a big fan of horror movies, and loves to watch films like Friday the 13th when she's not on the road.

“Ghost Story” follows Carrie's number-one duet with Jason Aldean, “If I Didn't Love You.” She's also in the middle of her Reflection Las Vegas residency, which resumes later this month.

House passes legislation to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus

In a move designed to further isolate Moscow’s economy in response to President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, the House passed a bill on Thursday that will suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus.  Biden is expected to sign the trade suspension measure into law when it reaches his desk. The House-passed bill now heads to the Senate.

The bill would revoke Russia’s “most favored nation” status in the World Trade Organization and pave the way for President Biden to introduce higher tariffs on Russian goods such as steel, aluminum and plywood. It’s the latest in a series of punitive actions in coordination with the E.U. and Group of Seven industrial nations after Russia invaded Ukraine last month.

The vote came a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a virtual address to Congress, calling on lawmakers to do more to help Ukraine.  The Biden administration has already imposed a series of punitive measures to block Russian oil and gas imports in coordination with the European Union. However Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked for his allies to take military steps to protect Ukraine, such as imposing a no-fly zone over parts of the country and providing fighter jets.

Federal judge allows Capitol riot suspect to plead guilty for assault of a police officer

A federal judge has allowed a Texas man accused of assaulting a police officer during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to plead guilty in an unusual move from the court.  U.S. District Judge Randy Moss repeatedly asked the defendant, Lucas Denney, if he was aware of his rights and if he wanted to proceed with pleading guilty to assaulting an officer at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021. Prosecutors violated laws by waiting months to file charges against Denney; just recently they filed a one-count indictment despite initially having Denney arrested on additional charges.

William Shipley, an attorney for Denney, had earlier moved at a hearing for a guilty plea in part because he believes doing so would preclude the filing of more charges; Judge Moss rejected him.  During Thursday’s hearing, however, the judge was particularly focused on telling Denney that pleading guilty to one charge didn’t mean he wouldn’t face more charges in the future.

Denney consulted with his lawyers before pleading guilty, and Judge Moss accepted Denney’s plea, having determined there was a factual basis for the plea. Denney admitted to picking up a pole from the ground and swinging that item at a law enforcement officer. saying, “The purpose was to block the pepper spray, but I did.” Denney had told the FBI that he was a member of the group Patriot Boys of North Texas, which he described as a conservative group that supported President Donald Trump. Denney was accused of lying about not knowing anybody who went to Washington to enter the Capitol.

If prosecutors had filed all the charges listed in the complaint, Denney would have faced some two dozen charges. Prosecutors say at this time, they have not made a decision on pursuing additional charges. Following his guilty plea, Denney faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

Old Dominion are wrapping their latest album with “No Hard Feelings,” and excitement about what lays ahead

Old Dominion are closing out their Time, Tequila & Therapy album with the bittersweet “No Hard Feelings,” which they selected as their next single because it’s a perfect blend of sadness and optimism.

“It’s a serious song, but it does have a little bit of an uplifting quality to it,” explains the group’s Matthew Ramsey. “It sort of has the underlying message of the entire album wrapped up in one song.”

A grown-up take on heartbreak, “No Hard Feelings” describes the best-case scenario of a breakup. “You hope to get to that point in a relationship — if it happens to end, you would hope to get to that point where you can look at this person and say, ‘I am truly happy for you, I care for you and I’m truly happy that you have found what you want,'” Matthew details.

It’s also a fitting song for where the band is at musically, as they bid a fond farewell to their Time, Tequila & Therapy album. Old Dominion aren’t planning to release a deluxe version of the record, and although they’re sad to close that chapter, they’re excited to begin the next.

“It’s extended as far as it can be extended,” says the band’s Brad Tursi.

Matthew then chimes in, hinting that a new album lies in store.

“We went to Key West for a little while and recorded some new music down there,” he says.  “I think we are just on to whatever the next one is.”

In the meantime, Old Dominion are spending this summer on the road, joining the bill of Kenny Chesney‘s Here and Now Tour.

The Chainsmokers share the video for their latest single “iPad”

The Chainsmokers have released the video for their new single, “iPad,” directed by Kid Studio. The clip finds band member Drew Taggart wandering through the streets of New York City as he ponders his emotions after ending an unhealthy relationship.

Taggart said in a statement:  “We wrote this song when I felt like I didn’t have anyone to talk to. It wasn’t that I didn’t have anyone that would listen, but I had reached a level of cognitive dissonance that I felt was unexplainable. I don’t keep a journal so writing this song and the others on this album (and past albums) is my opportunity to organize my thoughts.”

“iPad” follows the release of the band’s recent single, “High,” which both appear on the Chainsmokers’ as-yet-untitled fourth album.   Take a look at the video for iPadhere.
