President Joe Biden visits farmers to speak on rising inflation, says he’s working on lowering costs and expanding food production

On Wednesday, President Biden visited farmers in Kankakee, Ill., to speak on the impact of the Russian-Ukraine war on the economy, and the White House’s efforts to lower food prices in the face of rising inflation.  Said Biden: “America’s fighting on two fronts. At home, it’s inflation and rising prices. Abroad, it’s helping Ukrainians defending their democracy. Putin’s war has cut off critical sources of food.”

Biden said efforts will be made at the upcoming G7 meeting to both provide food to the world, and to lower prices – something that the war in Ukraine is preventing from getting to market. Said Biden: “They’re going to see what action we can take to increase fertilizer supplies globally and identify how we can work together to prevent export restrictions on food and bring more global production to market, which will stabilize prices [and] bring more certainty to our farmers and keep people from dying of hunger.”  He added that his administration is working to “drive down the costs to farmers and prices to consumers,” and that the market has been distorted by lack of competition, which increases prices.

The White House said in a statement earlier Wednesday: “[Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine has cut off a critical source of wheat, corn, barley, oilseeds and cooking oil. It has also disrupted global supply chains for fertilizer, which farmers depend on to maximize yields. These and other actions, combined with the ongoing pandemic-related disruptions to global supply chains, have put pressure on food prices, with global food prices increasing nearly 13% following Putin’s invasion.”

Earlier Wednesday, the Labor Department said that consumer prices rose by 0.3% during the month of April — slightly more than most economists projected. In particular, the report said that food prices increased almost 1% last month.

A sound that “feels like the next step”: Kelsea Ballerini hints at what's in store for her new album

Kelsea Ballerini's “Heartfirst” is a breezy single that she says is very different from last number-one hit, “Half of My Hometown” — and that's on purpose.

“In my career, I've loved to zig zag with singles,” she tells ABC Audio. “With Half of My Hometown,' it's a ballad about the story of me leaving my hometown. The fact that it was accepted like it was — it just went number-one, [and] that's so incredible — that gives me the confidence to zig zag back.”

That “zig zag” leads Kelsea to “Heartfirst,” an uptempo song that she describes as a “breezy, summer, warm, 90s-inspired country bop.” It's fans' first taste of the record that lays ahead, though Kelsea admits that she doesn't have all the details nailed down about what that project will be just yet.

“It's not finished,” she continues. “It's kind of all I'm doing. I have worked really hard on finding a sound that feels like the next step.”

Kelsea's working with new producers this time around, she continues, and honing in on a smaller circle of co-writers. “I just really wanted to zoom in and find something special and different and finesse it,” she explains.

But while some of the new album is still up in the air, there's one thing she knows for sure: The sonic leanings of “Heartfirst” are here to stay.

“Sonically, that is the direct of the record,” Kelsea confirms. “So I'm excited to see what people think.”

Brooks & Dunn will announce the next Country Music Hall of Fame inductees next week

The Country Music Hall of Fame is planning to announce its next class of inductees on Tuesday, May 17.

Fans can follow along from home, as the event will be livestreamed on the CMA's YouTube channel beginning at 10 a.m. CT that day. Brooks & Dunn — who joined the Hall of Fame as part of its 2019 class — will be on hand to announce the new inductees.

Each year, the Country Music Hall of Fame welcomes inductees in three different categories. Modern Era and Veterans Era inductees join the Hall each year, and there's one more rotating category, which can be in the Non-Performer, Songwriter and Recording and/or Touring Musician fields.

The new inductees will be announced less than a month after the last class of inductees were welcomed in the Hall's annual Medallion Ceremony. This year, The Judds, Ray Charles, Eddie Bayers and Pete Drake joined the Hall. Just one day before the ceremony, Naomi Judd — one half of The Judds — unexpectedly died.

The next class of inductees will be formally welcomed into the hall at a Medallion Ceremony of their own, taking place at a later date.

Jon Pardi promises to “Fill Er Up” on Friday with the next new tune off his upcoming album

Jon Pardi is keeping the new music rolling. He took to social media this week to preview another new song, called “Fill Er Up,” which will be out in full on Friday.

“Fill er up again, I need another round/ Yeah, I'm cuttin' loose cause I'm all wound up and I wanna knock em down,” Jon sings in the snippet he shared of the mid-tempo track.

When it arrives, “Fill Er Up” will be the next installment off an as-yet-unnamed upcoming album. He's already shared the lead single from that project — a song called “Last Night Lonely.”

Though Jon hasn't revealed all that many details about his next project, it can't be too far away. Back in April, he shared a celebratory studio shot to mark the album's completion.

His last studio album, Heartache Medication, came out in 2019. During the pandemic, Pardi also dropped a fun covers project called The Rancho Fiesta Sessions, plus a deluxe version of Heartache Medication.

Naomi Judd's public memorial service will be televised on CMT

Fans will be able to watch the public memorial service for Naomi Judd live: It's being aired commercial-free on CMT.

The event, called Naomi Judd: A River of Time Celebration, will be held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Sunday, May 15 at 6 p.m. ET. Wynonna Judd — Naomi's daughter and The Judds duet partner — will pay tribute to the late country legend during the ceremony, as will Naomi's other daughter, actor Ashley Judd.

More performances and special appearances from Naomi's friends and fellow country stars are expected to be announced in the days ahead.

Naomi died unexpectedly on April 30, just one day before The Judds were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Wynonna and Ashley issued a statement announcing the news. “Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness,” the statement reads in part.

In the wake of her death, CMT re-aired The Judds' final performance of “Love Can Build a Bridge,” which originally took place during the 2022 CMT Music Awards. The televised memorial service will “celebrate her timeless voice, unforgettable spirit and the immense impact she left on our genre through the best form of healing we have — music,” according to a statement from CMT.
