Nashville notes: Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs + more

In case you missed it, Carrie Underwood was on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night to perform her new song “Pink Champagne.”

Speaking of Carrie, she's one of the artists lining up to celebrate Barbara Mandrell on her 50th anniversary of being a Grand Ole Opry member. The country legend will be feted with a 50th anniversary celebration on July 30.

Before his “The Kind of Love We Make” song and video officially come out Friday, Luke Combs shared a special poster for the release on his social channels. It features the front page of a fictional small-town newspaper, offering some hints about the subject matter of the music video, as well as the lyrics to the song.

Brian Kelley is set to release a new song on July 1. Called “American Spirit,” it'll be a patriotic musical celebration, just in time for Independence Day.

Kane Brown joins an all-genre cast of collaborators for EDM artist Steve Aoki's new album

Kane Brown might be focusing on his country roots for his next album, but when it comes to collabs and features with other artists, nothing's off the table.

Case in point: The singer has been announced as one of EDM star Steve Aoki's duet partners for his next project, HiROQUEST. Kane is part of an all-star, all-genre list of collaborators, also including Taking Back Sunday, Mod Sun, PnB Rock, Georgia Ku and more.

Kane's feature comes on track five of the 16-song collection. Called “Move On,” the song also boasts a contribution from self-appointed “Cowboy DJ Rikstar,” Ricky Retro.

On his Instagram stories, Kane recently shared a video of himself recording a song that features rap-style vocals and an EDM-inspired beat; it's not clear whether it's a clip of “Move On” or whether Kane's teasing another new project.

Meanwhile, fans who prefer Kane's country side have plenty to be excited about, too: Not only is he working on an album that he says will be a full track list of country songs, but he also recently released his honky-tonkin' new country banger, “Like I Love Country Music.”

Garth Brooks will conclude his 2022 North American Stadium Tour shows with a Texas stop

Garth Brooks announced his final 2022 North American Stadium Tour stop on Wednesday: He'll conclude the run in Houston, Texas.

The show, which is set for August, will take place at the city's NRG Stadium. It's the first time Garth has ever played that venue, and the first time in seven years that he's played in Houston.

Though it's the last Stadium Tour show he'll play in the U.S., it's not the end of the tour by any means. Garth has already set five September dates for Dublin's Croke Park, all of which have sold out. Before that happens, Garth has big plans for the summer: His Stadium Tour will take him to cities across the U.S., including a show in Buffalo, New York and back-to-back Charlotte dates in July.

Tickets for Garth's Houston show go on sale July 24 at 10 a.m. CT, and though the stadium seats over 70,000, fans should still hurry to snap up their tickets. Since it launched, the Stadium Tour has been breaking sales records left and right.

As always with Garth's Stadium Tour shows, the concerts will feature in-the-round seating, and ticket purchase assumes COVID-19 risk. The ticket price for Houston is $98.95 per seat.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announces support for bipartisan gun reform framework

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Tuesday he supports the framework agreement for a gun reform plan announced by a bipartisan group of senators over the weekend. A total of 60 votes would be required to pass the measure with the Senate split 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats.

McConnell said during his weekly press conference that he would likely lend his vote to the deal announced by a group of 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats: “I’m comfortable with the framework and if the legislation ends up reflecting what the framework indicates, I’ll be supportive….I think if this framework becomes the actual piece of legislation, it’s a step forward, a step forward on a bipartisan basis, and further demonstrates to the American people that we can come together, which we have done from time to time on things like infrastructure and postal reform, to make progress for the country.”

A group of 20 senators led by Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas announced Sunday they reached consensus on the key priorities of a deal to reform the nation’s gun laws. The agreement would provide incentives for states to pass so-called “red flag” laws, boost mental health resources, provide funding for school safety resources, clarify the definition of a federally licensed firearms dealer and crack down on criminals who illegally straw purchase and traffic guns. It would also expand background checks for firearms buyers under 21, by requiring an investigative period to review juvenile and mental health records.

It does not, however, include a provision supported by President Joe Biden and other Democrats to raise the minimum age for purchasing semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21 years old that was included in a bill passed by the Democrat-led House last week.

Lainey Wilson is excited to step “outside my comfort zone” with acting gig in 'Yellowstone'

Lainey Wilson has a special relationship with ?Yellowstone. After featuring several of her songs in the revered show, including her #1 hit “Things a Man Oughta Know,” creator Taylor Sheridan has now written a part for her in the upcoming season.

In addition to being grateful to the popular series for introducing her music to a new audience, Lainey also connects with Yellowstone on a deeper level, as it aligns with the beliefs her parents instilled in her growing up in rural Louisiana.

Yellowstone‘s been real good to me. They’ve put three of my songs in the show so far and really introduced my music to a crowd of people who might not listen to radio or stream music, so it’s been very helpful for me and my career,” she says. “It is crazy how what the show stands for, it really does align with the way that I grew up and the way that I was raised and the things that my parents taught me, the importance of family and believing in things wholeheartedly.”

The Baskin, Louisiana, native will continue to grow her role with the show, as she will make her acting debut in season 5. She’s become “dear friends” with Sheridan over the years, and when he called in February to offer her a part created specifically for her, it was an opportunity she couldn’t refuse.

“I’ve been acting a fool my whole life, so let’s see what happens,” Lainey jokes. “I’ve been taking a few acting lessons and I’m really enjoying it. I love stepping outside of my comfort zone and doing things that are a little scary, and this is a little scary, but it’s going to be great.”

Yellowstone season 5 premieres on November 13 on Paramount+.

Russian court extends detention by 18 days for WNBA star Brittney Griner

A Russian court on Tuesday extended pre-trial detention for American basketball star Brittney Griner, who was detained in February and so far has spent more than three months in prison on drug charges. Griner, 31, had been detained in Russia  after an airport stop for allegedly carrying vape cartridges with hashish oil in her luggage. Griner’s pre-trial detention was previously extended to May 19, and then for another 30 days before Tuesday’s addition. Now, Griner will remain in custody at least through July 2, according to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency Tuesday. The agency said that the court’s 18-day extension for Griner came at “the request of the investigation.”

Griner was taken into custody at Sheremetyevo International Airport, near Moscow, on Feb. 17 after officials allegedly found vape cartridges with hashish oil in her bag, which is illegal to possess in Russia. She was charged with “large-scale transportation of drugs” and could face up to 10 years in prison.

The arrest came about a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, and some U.S. officials are concerned that Americans jailed in Russia could be used as leverage. Last month, the U.S. government changed Griner’s status to “wrongfully detained,” which means that the United States will take more proactive measures to free Griner and will no longer wait for the Russian justice system to resolve the issue.

Griner was visiting Russia to play basketball for the Russian Premier League team UMMC Ekaterinburg during the offseason.  Women basketball players often compete for teams overseas during their U.S. offseason to earn more income. The 6-foot-9 center won an NCAA title at Baylor in 2012; a WNBA title with the Phoenix Mercury, her current team, in 2014; and gold medals with the U.S. women’s team at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. When the WNBA kicked off this year’s season on May 6, it honored Griner with a floor decal bearing her initials and jersey number (No. 42) on the sideline of all 12 WNBA courts.

Lainey Wilson has been cast as musician Abby in a recurring role on the Paramount Network series Yellowstone which returns for Season 5 this fall on November 13th. Wilson’s one of several new castings announced by the network.

Wilson spoke about the news, saying:  “This is the first time I’ve said it out loud. So this is my first interview since we announced, this is my first time I’m sayin’ it, I’m gonna be a co-star on season five Yellowstone. You know, she’s gonna be a musician and so I get to play my songs too, it’s perfect. Taylor Sheridan, the writer and producer of the show, called me back in February and was like, ‘I’m creating a character specifically for you.’ And I’m like, ‘Thank you God and thank you Taylor Sheridan.’ It’s a blessing.”
