Brittney Griner Files Appeal Following 9 Year Prison Sentence

WNBA star Brittney Griner filed an appeal on Monday after being sentenced to nine years in prison. Griner was detained in Russia back in February after being found with vape canisters that contained cannabis oil in her luggage at the airport.

The appeal was no surprise as Griner’s lawyers already made plans to file it once she was convicted. Griner admitted that she had canisters in her luggage but said it was accidentally packed and had no intent on breaking the law. Griner’s lawyers argued that the sentence was extreme and defendants in similar cases received on average a five year prison sentence.

Nashville Songwriter Awards: Taylor Swift named Songwriter-Artist of the Decade, Jordan Davis & Luke Combs to perform

Taylor Swift is being honored as the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards.

The country-turned-pop superstar is being awarded for her consistent songwriting success between 2010 and 2019 for Nashville-associated songs that appeared on a variety of Billboard charts, including Country Airplay and Pop Songs. The Songwriter-Artist award requires that the songwriter is also the artist who recorded the songs.

“She's constantly mining, digging, untethered, uncovering new forms of artistic expression and going at it in such a way that I'm not sure if she's fearless, or just able to compartmentalize fear,” Keith Urbanshares in a statement. “Answering your calling is not for the faint of heart, but when you do you forge new frontiers and inspire others to do the same. Congrats Taylor. Lead on!”

The “Love Story” singer follows in the footsteps of previous recipients Toby Keith and Vince Gill

Additionally, Ashley Gorley has been named the Songwriter of the Decade for writing 62 #1 hits, including “Marry Me” by Thomas Rhett and Jon Pardi‘s “Dirt on My Boots.”

Luke Combs, Jordan Davis and Parmalee have been added to the list of performers who will pay tribute to their favorite songwriters, alongside previously announced performers Thomas, Walker Hayes, Hardy and more. Garth Brooks has also been tapped to receive the Kris KristoffersonLifetime Achievement Award.

The fifth annual event will be hosted at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on September 20.

Kenny Chesney Setting Records

From Kenny Chesney: “You live these songs,” Chesney marveled. “You come to these stadiums and see the faces, share the moments and it becomes your life, my life. It’s why I like to say No Shoes Nation is the most passionate place on earth. No matter what we throw at the people who come out, they bring it back to us with just as much heart and just as much fire. Whether it’s a birthday or ‘There Goes My Life,’ the people who come out come with everything they’ve got – and I am so grateful for it.”

This is the third personal attendance record Chesney has surpassed on the trek. In May, the country superstar set a Nissan Stadium record as he performed to 57,211 fans in Nashville. Nearly a month later, he topped that at Chicago’s Soldier Field with 52,792.

Four more cities, four more stadium shows – and Here And Now 2022 will be complete. Presented by Blue Chair Bay Spirits and fueled by Marathon, Chesney, band and crew can’t believe it’s almost over. “We waited for so long, and you wish it could go on and on.”

Ruth Ann Casto, Mother of Billy Ray Cyrus has Passed

From Billy Ray : “My mamaw Ruthie made her way home and into heaven yesterday,” Noah tells fans in the caption of her post. “Not sure I can find the words, to sum up exactly how I feel. I was able to spend the last month of her life by her side and for that, I’m honored and beyond lucky to have had that time together. We talked a lot. We laughed a lot, but we sometimes just sat and soaked in each other’s company and said nothing at all.”

Luke Combs' “The Kind of Love We Make” is reminiscent of the '90s pop acts he grew up listening to

Luke Combs is a bona fide country star, but he notes that his new single, “The Kind of Love We Make,” is a call back to the ’90s music he grew up listening to.

Though known for his extensive list of #1 country hits, Luke reveals he spent much of his childhood listening to pop acts like Boyz II MenBackstreet Boys and NSYNC. That pop influence shines through on “The Kind of Love We Make,” which he quickly picked up on when co-writers Jamie DavisDan Isbell and Randy Isbell played him the melody of the song for the first time.

“They had come out to write with me and they said, ‘Here’s this thing that Jamie came up with and what do you think about it?’ And I was like, ‘I think this is fantastic,'” Luke recalls. “I loved listening to Boyz II Men and Backstreet Boys and NSYNC and all that stuff. I was right in that age demo when all that stuff was absolutely crushing.”

Luke says that he learned to sing while listening to those hit ’90s acts and that the melody of “Love” is “reminiscent” of the era. But he did want to find a way to put his own stamp on it.

“How do we do this thing and and really still make it sound like a country song? I don’t want it to sound like an R&B song, and I want to be open and honest about where … those kind of melodies and things come from,” he explains. “But I also wanted it to still sound like something that you would come to expect from me.”

“The Kind of Love We Make” is the second single of Luke’s current album, Growin’ Up.
