Four reported dead after Tropical Storm Nicole makes landfall in Florida

Hurricane Nicole made landfall on Florida’s Atlantic coast early Thursday, leading to at least four deaths, widespread power outages, and the collapse of several homes. Nicole made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, just six weeks after Category 4 Hurricane Ian, and weakened into a tropical storm shortly after making landfall.  Destructive winds and heavy rains along the coast created widespread damage as the storm travels over Florida.

The National Hurricane Center said that the hurricane made landfall just south of Vero Beach around 3 a.m. ET on the east coast of the Florida Peninsula on North Hutchinson Island, with sustained winds estimated to be around 75 mph.  The Orange County sheriff’s office said Thursday afternoon: “Earlier today deputies responded to the intersection of Bayfront Parkway and Pershing Avenue and found a man who was unresponsive after he exited a vehicle and made contact with a downed power line. A woman traveling with the man was also electrocuted and was transported to the hospital, where she died.”   Authorities in Orange County, Florida, said that two more people have been killed in a storm-related incident. Florida Highway Patrol said a pickup truck driving on the turnpike around 5:30 a.m. swerved toward the shoulder of Florida’s Turnpike after losing control and struck a driver of a tow truck who was standing behind his parked truck; both drivers were killed.

Residents also faced widespread power outages Thursday with more than 303,000 customers without electricity in the state as of 1:30 p.m.  Nicole making landfall is rare for the region, as only two hurricanes on record have made landfall in Florida during November: Hurricane Yankee in 1935 and Hurricane Kate in 1985.

The National Hurricane Center warned that Nicole is forecast to bring a dangerous storm surge along parts of the east-central and the northeastern coasts of Florida, as well as portions of coastal Georgia and the Florida Big Bend along the Gulf coast. Flooding is also possible through the southeast US and the central Appalachians, extending northward through eastern Ohio, west-central Pennsylvania and western New York on Friday night into Saturday.

President Biden to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in person at G-20 summit

The White House confirmed on Thursday that President Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, Nov. 14, at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. Although they have met virtually, it will be their first in-person meeting between the two since Mr. Biden took office.

A meeting between Biden and Xi had been under discussion by U.S. and Chinese officials in the weeks leading up to the summit, as the U.S. aims to navigate their relationship with China. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement: “The leaders will discuss efforts to maintain and deepen lines of communication between the United States and the [People’s Republic of China], responsibly manage competition, and work together where our interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community. The two leaders will also discuss a range of regional and global issues.”

During a press conference, Biden said he has told Xi in the past that he’s “looking for competition, not conflict,” adding, “and so what I want to do with him when we talk is lay out what each of our red lines are and understand what he believes to be in the critical national interests of China, what I know to be the critical interests of the United States, and to determine whether or not they conflict with one another … And if they do, how to resolve it and how to work it out.”  The president said he anticipated that the two leaders will discuss Taiwan, as well as China’s relationship with other countries in the region. The two leaders spoke by phone in July for more than two hours over tensions in Taiwan.

Biden embarked on a three-part trip to Egypt, Cambodia and Indonesia, and will first stop in Egypt for the COP27 United Nations climate change summit, then head to Cambodia this weekend for the annual U.S.-ASEAN summit and East Asia Summit, and finally travel to Bali for the G20 summit.

Jon Pardi's little ranch hand + John Osborne's dynamic duo: Meet the proud dads-to-be of the CMA Awards

The dads-to-be of country music were out and about at the 2022 CMA Awards on Wednesday night. For one, there was Vocal Duo of the Year-nominated Shay Mooney — one half of Dan + Shay — who is currently expecting his third child with wife Hannah.

In fact, the Vocal Duo of the Year category was brimming with soon-to-be dads this year. Brothers Osborne's John Osborne announced just hours before the ceremony that he and his wife, Lucie Silvas, are expecting twins; when the sibling duo won in their category, John couldn't help but shout out his proud new dad status from the stage.

On the red carpet before the show, John explained that he and Lucie's journey to parenthood hasn't been easy.

“My wife and I have been trying for a very long time and we've done IVF. It was a long journey and finally worked out,” he detailed to ET Online. “If anyone out there is struggling with IVF or fertility, just hang in there. It worked for us and I feel very lucky.”

Meanwhile, soon-to-be girl dad Jon Pardi walked the red carpet with his wife, Summer, who dressed her baby bump in a cut-out white and silver gown.

“Summer, she's perfectly fine. She's not sick. She's super healthy, baby's healthy,” Jon said, updating ET Online on the pregnancy. “We're just gonna get a little nursery soon, and then stay up all night.”

They've also picked out a name for their little girl, and Jon says it's set in stone. “We have a name. It's done,” he said.

After considering sitting out the CMAs, Maren Morris decided to attend – but skipped the red carpet

Maren Morris wound up attending the 2022 CMA Awards on Wednesday night, after telling the Los Angeles Times back in September that she was considering not going.

“I'm very honored that my record is nominated. But I don't know if I feel [at] home there right now,” Maren said at the time.

The singer recently became embroiled in a social media feud with Jason Aldean's wife, Brittany, due to transphobic comments Brittany posted on Instagram and things got pretty heated: Most recently, Jason mentioned Maren's name during a Nashville show and the crowd erupted in boos.

But Maren was always leaving the possibility of going to the CMAs — “So many people I love will be in that room,” she pointed out — and it seems like she eventually split the difference, attending the awards show but sitting out the red carpet (which Jason and Brittany walked).

Instead of hitting the carpet, Maren and her husband, Ryan Hurd, held a “red carpet” of their own at home to showcase their all-black awards night looks on social media.
