Department of Justice to monitor voting rights across 24 states

The Justice Department will send monitors to 24 states to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws in Tuesday’s elections. The action comes as civil rights groups and the federal government have raised alarm over potential voter intimidation at some polling places and ballot boxes. The 64 jurisdictions where federal monitors will be dispatched include the three Florida counties of Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach.

The DOJ said Monday that the monitors are being sent to protect the rights of voters as they have for decades: “Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Division has regularly monitored elections in the field in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters. The Civil Rights Division will also take complaints from the public nationwide regarding possible violations of the federal voting rights laws through its call center.”

The DOJ said: “Complaints related to disruption at a polling place should always be reported immediately to local election officials (including officials in the polling place). Complaints related to violence, threats of violence or intimidation at a polling place should be reported immediately to local police authorities by calling 911.”  On Election Day, the public may report possible violations of the federal voting rights laws by a complaint form on the department’s website or by telephone toll-free at 800-253-3931.

Lionel Richie named 2022 American Music Awards ‘Icon Award’ recipient

Lionel Richie will be honored with the prestigious Icon Award at the 2022 American Music Awards (AMAs). The AMAs represents the year’s top achievements in music determined by the fans, for the fans. The Icon Award honors an artist whose body of work has marked a global influence over the music industry.

Said Richie: “I’m immensely grateful for a career that has taken me to places I never imagined that I’d go, from arenas worldwide to studio sets to the AMA stage. I can recall one of the first times I got to perform at the AMAs. It was to sing ‘We Are the World’ among the most iconic musicians of my generation, so it is surreal to be receiving this recognition 36 years later.”

Richie has won 17 AMAs over the course of his career, starting with the 1979 hit pop/rock single “Three Times a Lady” with the Commodores and again in 1980 with the Commodores for Soul/R&B Group. Throughout his solo career, he took home two awards in 1982, two in 1983, and one in 1984.  Richie hosted the 1985 show, where he won six AMAs in one night that year; and in 1987, he earned four awards throughout the night. To this day, Richie holds the record for most music video AMAs with six wins, and is among the most decorated AMA winners of all time.

As the world’s largest fan-voted awards show, the AMAs will air globally across a footprint of linear and digital platforms in more than 120 countries and territories. Fan voting is now open via VoteAMAs.com and Twitter in all award categories.  The 2022 American Music Awards, hosted by Wayne Brady, will air live from the Microsoft Theater at LA Live in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 20th at 8 pm EST/PST on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.

Carrie Underwood once crowd-surfed at a Green Day concert

Carrie Underwood might not crowd-surf much these days, but if she looks like a natural during the crowd-surfing scene of her “Hate My Heart” music video, there's good reason for that: She's done it in real life.

“When I was 16, maybe 17, at a Green Day concert,” Carrie reveals to ET Online. “This isn't my first rodeo. It is fun to get to do cause it is out of character, cause I don't go around doing these things on a regular basis.”

Another scene in the music video revisits another wild memory from the singer's real life: riding a mechanical bull.

“I have [ridden] a mechanical bull before. It was [at] a CMA after-party,” Carrie shares. “It was just silly. It was one of those things where everybody was getting on the bull [and] I did as well.”

Carrie's “Hate My Heart” music video is a fun foray into all the classic ways to get over a breakup — from sad movies to dating apps to working out — and it even ends with Carrie singing the final chorus to her double onstage.

“I Still Pray”: Mickey Guyton finds peace in the turmoil with her gospel-tinged new song

Mickey Guyton seeks clarity in her faith in “I Still Pray,” an inspirational, new song that spotlights the singer's sparkling voice and delivers a poignant message.

“Sometimes when I don't know what to do or how to help, I pray,” Mickey says of the song, explaining that when she wrote it, she needed to hear its message herself.

She continued, “Before writing this song, I'd been feeling kind of overwhelmed with all that's going on in the world and how, at times, it feels like we have no control. And we don't…I don't have the answers. I just pray. So, I wrote this song from that place and hope when people hear it, in brings them some inspiration in the moments when it's needed.”

Mickey wrote “I Still Pray” with fellow country star Tyler Hubbard and two other collaborators. It's the latest in a series of songs she's put out recently, including “Somethin' Bout You” and “How You Love Someone.”

To go along with her new song, Mickey released a simple, powerful music video for “I Still Pray,” which features black-and-white closeup shots of her singing the song.

Dolly Parton says her rock album will be out next “summer or fall”

Dolly Parton officially became a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer over the weekend, an honor she initially tried to recuse herself from because — despite being a legend of the country and pop worlds — she didn't quite think she qualified as a rock star.

But her fans, fellow artists and the Hall of Fame all begged to differ. Dolly was ushered into the Rock Hall Saturday night, inducted by pop star Pink and joined by an all-genre cast of artists, including Judas Priest's Rob Halford, for a celebratory performance of “Jolene.”

Now, Dolly says she's been inspired to put out a rock album. On the red carpet before the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, she dropped some details on that project to ET Online.

“It is happening. I'm gonna have one come out next summer, summer or fall,” the singer said, going on to say that the track list will include covers of rock classics and some big-name special guests.

“I'm doing a lot of classic rock songs and I'm gonna have a lot of icon singers sing with me, so it's gonna be fun for me,” she continued. “Hope the crowd enjoys it.”

Keith Urban is returning to Las Vegas for an all-new residency show

Keith Urban heads back to Las Vegas next March for an all-new residency, according to Billboard.

After a three-year residency that lasted from 2019 to 2022, Keith's created an all-new show for a different venue — Zappos Theater — that he says will accommodate a somewhat larger crowd and a new, exciting feel for the fans coming to see the show.

“I haven't played in there yet, but I've been in there and it felt a little more geared towards the kind of energy I was trying to create at [the venue for the last residency,] the Colosseum,” Keith explains.

As for what concertgoers can expect? Keith says that he's hoping to strike a happy middle ground between flashy production and a simple, performance-driven show.

“I want to take advantage of being able to build stuff that's just going to stay, but the spirit of my show, I'm never going to change that,” he says. “I'm going to have a certain way of playing that isn't going to be too dependent upon behemoth props and production that kind of sweeps and drowns me. I've never been a fan of that for what I do.”

Keith's residency launches March 3, with shows continuing on March 4, 8, 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18. He'll be back a couple of months later for more shows on June 16, 17, 21, 23, 24, 28, 30 and July 1. Tickets go on sale to the general public November 12.
