Parkland school shooter sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole

The gunman who murdered 17 people at a Florida high school was formally sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. After a months-long trial, a jury in October recommended Nikolas Cruz, 24, be sentenced to life in prison for the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he killed 14 students and three school staff members

Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer sentenced Cruz  to serve a life sentence with no possibility of parole for each of the 17 counts of murder to which he had pleaded guilty, with the sentences to run consecutively. Scherer also imposed a sentence of life in prison with a minimum of 20 years to serve on 14 of the 17 counts of attempted murder, and life without the possibility of parole for the remaining three counts of attempted murder.

Last month, in a 9-3 vote, a jury leaned toward sending Cruz to death row, but Florida law dictates that anything less than a unanimous vote automatically shifts the sentence to life without parole. Ahead of the sentencing, survivors and families of those killed in the Parkland shooting made victim-impact statements. For two days, parents, wives, siblings and other relatives of slain victims and some of the surviving wounded addressed Cruz face to face.

Prosecutors had sought the death penalty, while the defense had asked for life in prison. The jury’s decision on Oct. 13 shocked family members of victims who were visibly distraught by the verdict. During the the three-month penalty trial, the defense argued that Cruz is mentally ill and his condition led him to the 2018 Valentine’s Day rampage in which he wielded a semi-automatic rifle at his former school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Cruz will be taken within days to the Florida Department of Corrections, before he is assigned to a maximum-security prison in the state.

The Judds' final tour dates are unlike any other show — even for a seasoned pro like Wynonna Judd

Wynonna Judd has been touring nearly all her life, but she's never experienced anything like her current dates on the The Judds: The Final Tour.

“We are taking full advantage of the love and support,” the singer acknowledges, speaking about the fan response to the performance. “I will tell you, as an artist, I've never experienced this kind of emotion at a show.”

It makes sense that these concerts would be the most emotional of Wynonna's career. She and her mom, Naomi Judd, first announced the tour as a final goodbye from legendary mother-daughter country duo The Judds. But Naomi died by suicide at the end of April, months before the run was scheduled to begin.

Wynonna decided to go ahead with the tour, reenvisioned as an all-star girls' night with guests artists like Trisha Yearwood, Ashley McBryde, Kelsea Ballerini and many more. Those nights have been so special that she recently announced she'll extend the tour into 2023.

Not only is it a chance for fans to bid farewell to The Judds, it's also a chance for Wynonna to celebrate her mom’s life and legacy onstage.

Those emotions will be running extra high this Thursday, when she recreates the final concert from The Judds' 1991 Farewell Tour for a CMT special called The Judds: Love is Alive — The Final Concert at the very same venue where she and Naomi first played that show three decades ago.

“Thirty-one years ago, almost to the day, I did my last concert with my mom,” Wynonna remembers. “And we are recreating it … the stage is similar, but it's modernized enough for new fans to go, Oh, that's hip.'”

The Thursday night show will air as a TV special on CMT in March 2023.

Take a look at Machine Gun Kelly in trailer for the film ‘Taurus’

The trailer for the upcoming music industry drama Taurus has been released, starring Machine Gun Kelly — the musician otherwise known as Colson Baker.

MGK plays Cole, ‘a depressed musician on the verge of self-destructing amid his seemingly glamorous L.A. lifestyle.’ As events in the trailer grow increasingly bleak, Cole begins writing new music; he says “I want it to sound far from everything … Like everything’s upside down.”  Taurus also stars MGK’s real-life fiancée Megan Fox as well as Maddie Hasson, Scoot McNairy and Ruby Rose and will feature a soundtrack of new music by Kelly.

Earlier this month, MGK wrapped up the European leg of his Mainstream Sellout Tour with a show in Amsterdam. This December, he’s slated to play at Tampa, Fla.’s MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre before hitting the stage at Audacy Beach Festival 2022 in Fort Lauderdale.

Ashley McBryde to host TV special benefitting first responder families

Ashley McBryde is getting into the holiday spirit, and in this case, that means giving back to the families of fallen first responders.

The singer has signed on to host Homes for the Holidays, a television performance special featuring artists playing their music all over the U.S. In addition to her hosting duties, Ashley will contribute a performance of “Amazing Grace,” which serves as the grand finale of the show.

Other musical acts who have signed on to participate in the special include Travis Tritt, Runaway June, Bret Michaels, Ian Munsick and Robert Rudolph. Plus, Cole Hauser — one of the stars of the runaway TV hit Yellowstone — is on the bill, too.

The broadcast will benefit The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps provide mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen first responders. “What better way to celebrate the holiday season than by helping Tunnel to Towers showcase the love, resilience and hope of these military and first responder families?” Ashley says of the show.

Homes for the Holidays will air Thanksgiving weekend through New Year's Day across a variety of network affiliates, including Fox, Scripps and Gray stations, plus the Circle Network and AXS TV.

Carrie Underwood copes with a breakup in “Hate My Heart” music video

Carrie Underwood's latest music video is here and it's a master class in all the different ways to get over heartbreak.

The video for “Hate My Heart” starts with five women — Carrie and four of her pals — simultaneously slamming the door on a relationship, both literally and metaphorically. In the group chat, all of them swear they're done and they all start heading down different paths toward healing with their different coping mechanisms.

Carrie immediately heads to the gym, sprinting on a treadmill and taking all her frustration out on a punching bag. Meanwhile, one of her friends is eating ice cream and watching sad movies, another is checking out dating apps and a third is enjoying a little online retail therapy.

In a fun Easter egg for Carrie's longtime fans, the final friend in the group is sitting in her recent ex's car, carving her name into his leather seats — a nod to a lyric in Carrie's 2005 megahit “Before He Cheats.”

Another scene shows Carrie onstage, singing to a packed house, as the other version of herself — the recently single version who's been hitting the gym to ease her heartbreak — makes her way toward the front of the crowd. Finally, she jumps up and the two Carries sing face to face in the final chorus of the song.

Carrie debuted the music video for “Hate My Heart” on Facebook, and it’ll be available on YouTube on Friday. The song is the latest single off her Denim & Rhinestones album.

Maren Morris isn't done with her Humble Quest era yet. On Wednesday, she announced plans to release a reimagined collection of seven songs from her newest album, Humble Quest: In Rare Form.

To go along with the new project, Maren will also release a short film. She shared a preview of the visual element on social media, showing footage of her sitting around a campfire with a group of musicians.

“It's been amazing, playing this record live,” Maren tells her collaborators in the teaser clip. “Y'all did so much prep before I even walked into the rehearsal space.”

The new versions of Maren’s Humble Quests songs will take another perspective on the album's central questions of what matters most in life and how to create and value meaning in life. “What are we gonna leave behind? As long as we have each other, it doesn't really matter, but our songs, we get to leave behind,” Maren continues.

The teaser also shows snippets of the singer performing Humble Quest's title track in the woods, backed by a group of string musicians.
