Nate Smith's simply “telling the truth” with “Whiskey on You”

Not that long ago, Nate Smith was a worship leader whose hometown of Paradise, California, had been devastated by a fire.

Now he has his first top-five hit with “Whiskey on You,” which he recently found out has been certified Gold.

“I got really surprised at the Opry the other night when they surprised me with that plaque, and I did a little bunny hop in front of everybody in the world,” he laughs. “But I was excited. I was genuinely excited.”

The secret to the success of “Whiskey on You”? Nate suspects it’s simply authenticity.

“It came out of a breakup and I was a little mad when I wrote it, and was drinking Jack Daniels at the time and wrote the song,” he tells ABC Audio. “And it just seemed to connect with other people. You know, there’s something about just telling the truth out there.”

Nate’s self-titled, 20-song debut is set to arrive February 17, before he heads out on tour with Thomas Rhett in May.

Jimmie Allen hits No. 1 with “Down Home”

Jimmie Allen has reached No. 1 on the country charts with his latest single “Down Home.” The song is a tribute to his late father, James Allen, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 65.  Down Home was released as the second single off Jimmie’s 2022 album, Tulip Drive, which is named in honor of the street his grandmother grew up on in Lewes, Delaware. It also marks Allen’s fourth No. 1 single, following “Best Shot,” “Make Me Want To” and “Freedom Was a Highway,” featuring Brad Paisley.

To celebrate Down Home hitting No.1,  Allen wrote a letter to his dad on social media: “Dear Dad, I knew you existed and now the world knows too. Thank you to country radio for helping me share the memory of my father through this song … I’m thankful to y’all for pushing me to do this song but I also thank you for being patient and writing it with me when I was emotionally ready…To every person that listened to this song thank you. I read every message about how this song related to you and the person you lost. I’m sending love and peace your way in dealing with your loss. #BigJim #RipDad #15″

Bailey Zimmerman heads into 2023 with a handful of Platinum

2022 was a good year to be Bailey Zimmerman. The newcomer grabbed two Platinum singles: one with his first #1, “Fall in Love,” and another with his current hit, “Rock and a Hard Place.”

That makes Bailey the reigning country king of RIAA’s Class of 2022, but not the only one who made an impressive showing. Avery Anna (“Narcissist”), Nate Smith (“Whiskey on You”), Chase Matthew (“County Line”) and Corey Kent (“Wild as Her”) all scored first-time Gold records.

A Gold record means combined sales and streaming equaled more than half a million units. For Platinum, on the other hand, it’s 1 million.

“Me for Me”: A glimpse inside the friendship of Tyler Hubbard, TR and Russell Dickerson

How well do Thomas Rhett and Russell Dickerson know their longtime friend Tyler Hubbard? Well, you’ll find some of the answers in Tyler’s new track “Me for Me.”

“We weren't even planning on writing that day but it just kinda happened,” Tyler explains on social media. “It quickly became one of my favorite songs on the album. We know each other so well that I think this song could have only been written with these two.”

In the accompanying picture, all three are hamming it with their wives, complete with funny glasses, hats, and an inflatable guitar and flamingo. The photo’s reminiscent of others taken during the couples’ longstanding tradition of going caroling in costume during the holidays.

You can also check out the new unofficial video for “Me for Me,” which is the latest track from Tyler’s self-titled full-length debut, which arrives January 27. The record also includes his first solo #1, “5 Foot 9,” as well as his new single “Dancin’ in the Country.”

You'll never think of “Tulsa” the same way again after you hear Elle King's new track

What is “Tulsa” spelled backward? Well, that’s a revelation Elle King delivers in the latest track from her first full-length country album.

“Tulsa is a song about doing someone wrong,” the “Drunk (And I Don’t Want to Go Home)” hitmaker explains.

“This is not about tearing women down but it's about putting the blame on the wrongdoer,” Elle continues. “If a man is cheating on you, it's not her fault because there are a million other girls he would do it with. And he'll just cheat on her, too. It's a song about uniting and not taking s*** from this real P.O.S.”

If you listen closely, you can hear Ashley McBryde helping out on background vocals, while John Osborne lends his guitar chops to the tune.

Come Get Your Wife arrives Friday, January 27, before Elle’s A-FREAKIN-MEN Tour kicks off February 14 in New Orleans.
