Walker Hayes reflects on fatherhood with two new songs

“Fancy Like” hitmaker Walker Hayes reflects on fatherhood, loss, life and fame in his new songs “6 string american dream” and “if father time had a daughter.

In “6 string american dream,” Walker takes a long, hard look at his life and the journey he’s trekked, with its highs and lows.

“Yeah I'm a little bit higher up on that Nashville ladder/ But money didn't fix anything that really matters/ My haters still say I can't sing/ My marriage still needs counseling/ My sons don't know how not to fight/ My daughter's shorts are too short & too tight/ If I'm drinking honestly/ Still can't drink responsibly/ I'm a 6 string American dream/ But I still wake up sad/ I still need Jesus/ And I still miss my dad,” Walker sings in the candid chorus.

Meanwhile, in “if father time had a daughter,” the singer begs the fictional Father Time to slow down the clock for dads so that their daughters don’t have to grow up so quickly.

“Been waiting to get these two songs out for a long time,” Walker says. “As I look at the body of work and the songs I'm sitting on, I think about what I want to say – and this is what I want to say to the world right now. These songs wreck me in different ways and it's my hope that everyone that listens will leave feeling real feelings.”

Walker will kick off his The Duck Buck Tour on April 13 in Rosemont, Illinois. For a full list of dates and to get tickets, visit Walker’s website.

Luke Combs is grateful for his “5 Leaf Clover”

Luke Combs is a lucky man, and he’s reflecting on that in his new song, “5 Leaf Clover.”

Penned by Luke, Chase McGill and Jessi Alexander, the track finds the country star counting his blessings for the beautiful life he has.

“I know I'm a lucky man, but I ain't sure why I am/ ‘Cause it ain't like anyone deserves the world in the palm of their hand/ Now I hit my knees, thankful as can be/ But the one thing I can't get over/ How'd a guy like me, who'd have been fine with three/ Wind up with a five-leaf clover?” Luke sings in the midtempo chorus.

“One of the 1st times I ever played 5 Leaf Clover, and y'all have politely let me know to release it ever since. Haha. I'm glad to say it's now out everywhere, and I hope y'all love it!” Luke writes in an Instagram post alongside a performance video of “5 Leaf Clover.”

“‘I know I'm a lucky man but I ain't sure why I am.’ My wife, son, family, friends, and Y'ALL are some of the biggest reasons why I'm a lucky man,” he adds. “And I'll be forever grateful to y'all for giving me the opportunity to get to do something I love – create and play country music. Thank you!”

“5 Leaf Clover” is the latest preview of Luke’s forthcoming album, Gettin’ Old, which drops on March 24.

Poland becomes first NATO member to give Ukraine fighter jets

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said Thursday that his country plans to give Ukraine around a dozen MiG-29 fighter jets — making Poland the first NATO member to fulfill the Ukrainian government’s urgent requests for warplanes. President Duda said Poland would hand over four of the Soviet-made warplanes “within the next few days” and that the rest needed servicing and would be supplied later (the Polish word he used to describe their number can mean between 11-19).

Duda said of the aircrafts: “They are in the last years of their functioning but they are in good working condition,” adding that Poland’s air force would replace the planes it gives to Ukraine with South Korea-made FA-50 fighters and American-made F-35s.  He did not say whether other countries would be making the same move, although Slovakia has claimed it would send its disused MiGs to Ukraine. Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller said some other countries (who he did not name) with MiGs also had pledged them to Kyiv.

NATO allies have expressed hesitancy to share fighter jets, despite pleas from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Western supporters.  Ukraine had several dozen MiG-29s before Russia’s invasion that it inherited in the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it’s unclear how many of them remain in service after more than a year of fighting.Duda made the announcement during a joint news conference in Warsaw with the visiting Czech president, Petr Pavel.

11 big banks pledge $30 billion rescue package for First Republic

On Thursday, eleven of the biggest banks in the U.S. announced a $30 billion rescue package for California-based First Republic Bank, in an effort to prevent them from becoming the third bank to fail in less than a week. First Republic serves a similar clientele as Silicon Valley Bank, which failed Friday after depositors withdrew about $40 billion. First Republic — which had deposits totaling $176.4 billion as of Dec. 31 — was facing a similar crisis.

JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup and Wells Fargo have agreed to each put $5 billion in uninsured deposits into First Republic. Meanwhile Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs would deposit $2.5 billion each into the bank. The remaining $5 billion would consist of $1 billion contributions from BNY Mellon, State Street, PNC Bank, Truist and US Bank. The group of 11 banks confirmed in a statement that other unnamed banks had seen large amounts of withdrawals of uninsured deposits, which are those that exceed the $250,000 level insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The banks said in their statement: “The actions of America’s largest banks reflect their confidence in the country’s banking system.”  U.S. banking regulators also issued a statement in support of the bank rescue package. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said: “This show of support by a group of large banks is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system.”

On Monday, First Republic’s shares dropped more than 60% even after the bank said it had secured additional funding from JPMorgan and the Federal Reserve. The bank’s shares were down as much as 36% on Thursday, but rallied after reports the rescue package was in the works and closed up nearly 9%.  The collapse last week of Silicon Valley Bank was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history after the demise of Washington Mutual in 2008. New York-based Signature Bank was shuttered two days.

One thing that you won't find Thomas Rhett doing? Listening to podcasts

While many have jumped on the podcast train and admitted to bingeing their favorite shows for hours, Thomas Rhett hasn’t. In fact, the country star and father of four says it’s foreign territory and he doesn’t listen to any.

“I think I'm the last person in the world that has hopped on the podcast train,” Thomas says.

“I'm also never alone in the car. I'm always, like, got two kids in the back seat, and if I were to turn on, like, a Joe Rogan podcast, I think they'd be like, ‘What are we listening to?'” he says. “So, maybe one day when all four of my kids are in school I'll become a podcaster type of person, but I am not as of late.”

Thomas is currently climbing up the country charts with his latest single, “Angels Don't Always Have Wings.” This summer he will hit the road for his Home Team Tour 23, with Cole Swindell and Nate Smith as opening acts. The 40-city trek kicks off on May 4 in Des Moines, Iowa, before concluding in Nashville on September 29.

For tickets, visit Thomas’ website.
