Gary Rossington, guitarist and last surviving original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies at 71

Gary Rossington, guitarist for Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away Sunday at the age of 71, according to an announcement on the band's Facebook page.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” the band shared. “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.”

The statement added, “Please keep [his wife] Dale, [his daughters] Mary [and] Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family's privacy at this difficult time.”

Rossington, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2005, was the last original member of Skynyrd’s lineup remaining in the group.  He had been the last surviving original member of the band, following the death of Larry Junstrom in 2019.

He played guitar on many of the band's biggest hits, including “Simple Man,” which he co-wrote with Ronnie Van Zant, as well as “Sweet Home Alabama” — which he also co-wrote — and “Tuesday's Gone.” He played slide guitar on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s signature “Free Bird.”

Rossington was one of the passengers who survived the October, 20, 1977 Mississippi plane crash that took the lives of Lynyrd Skynyrd members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines and three others, though he broke both arms, legs, wrists, and ankles, in addition to his pelvis.

Outside of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rossington, along with Skynyrd member Allen Collins, formed the Rossington Collins Band, which released two albums in 1980 and 1981 before disbanding in 1982. He also formed The Rossington Band with his wife Dale Krantz; they released two albums in 1986 and 1988.

Parker McCollum's video for “Rest Of My Life” shines a light on addiction

Parker McCollum has unveiled a powerful music video for his song “Rest Of My Life.” The cinematic visualizer tells a heart-rending and, at times, too-hard-to-watch story of addiction, devastation, sobriety and redemption.

“'Rest Of My Life' is my favorite song I have ever written, and I always felt like it deserved a music video,” Parker tells the press. “I really wanted to push the limits, and I didn't want to get done with this video and feel like we could've done more. So many talented people working on it made it easy to capture the feeling this song is about, even if it's more graphic and intense than what I was going through at the time I wrote it. Hopefully, it helps somebody.”

“Rest Of My Life” is featured on Parker’s third studio album, Gold Chain Cowboy. The 2021 project was his first with MCA Nashville and spawned the No. 1 hit single “Pretty Heart.”

Parker is currently climbing up the Mediabase country chart with his latest single, “Handle On You,” which previews his forthcoming record, Never Enough, dropping May 12.

Lee Brice sends “Save Your Roses” to country radio in memory of his longtime friend Kyle Jacobs

Lee Brice had plans to send a new single from an upcoming album to radio, but things changed when his confidant, producer and co-writer Kyle Jacobs died on February 17.

This left Lee wanting to honor Kyle’s life and legacy with another single – “Save the Roses.”

The touching ballad is told from the viewpoint of someone who has passed away as he observes his bereaved family and friends from heaven. Instead of being stuck in grief, he wants them to “save the roses” and live their lives to the fullest.

In an email to radio stations and streaming platforms, Lee’s label home, Curb Records, wrote, “Last week, Lee came to us with his desire to honor Kyle by releasing a beautiful song he and Lee co-wrote with another friend, Joe Leathers. The song is called ‘Save the Roses,’ an incredibly moving song made far more personal and poignant in light of losing Kyle.”

“To respect Lee’s wishes and to help honor Kyle and his legacy, we immediately pledged our support and pivoted from plan to come with a song from an upcoming project,” they revealed. “Instead, we’re asking our friends at radio and streaming to help us rally behind Lee and all the people that loved Kyle and support ‘Save the Roses.'”

Kyle, who was married to Kellie Pickler for 12 years, died in their Nashville home “from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom/office,” the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said.

“Save the Roses” is the fourth single off Lee’s 2020 album, Hey World.

Alex Murdaugh found guilty in murders of wife and son

After deliberating for three hours on Thursday, a jury of seven men and five women convicted 54-year-old Alex Murdaugh of two counts of murder in the fatal shootings of his wife Margaret, 52, and their youngest son, Paul, 22, in June 2021. The disgraced South Carolina lawyer was accused of murdering his wife and son to gain pity and distract from financial crimes threatening to topple his reputation; he faces 30 years to life in prison without parole. The jury also convicted Murdaugh of two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, which carry five more years in prison.

The verdict followed a lengthy trial that began in late January and included nearly six weeks of testimony from 75 witnesses, including Murdaugh. Lawyers for Murdaugh moved for a mistrial after the verdicts were read, which was denied by Circuit Judge Clifton Newman, who said that the verdict was a matter for the jury and that there was enough evidence to have found Murdaugh guilty: “The evidence of guilt is overwhelming, and I deny the motion.”  Thanking the jurors, Judge Newman said their verdict was support by the evidence: “All of the evidence pointed to only one conclusion. That’s the conclusion that you all reached.”

Sentencing will take place begining 9:30 a.m. Friday in South Carolina’s Colleton County. Prosecutors have indicated they will spare Murdaugh the death penalty, and instead seek life in prison without the possibility of parole. Murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison for the murder charge.

Blinken and Lavrov meet at G-20 summit for the first time since Russia-Ukraine war began

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine, chatting briefly on the sidelines of a G-20 meeting in India. A Senior State Department official said that the encounter between the two top diplomats involved less than 10 minutes of discussion. Blinken and Lavrov’s last in-person meeting was last January in Geneva.

Blinken urged Moscow to reverse Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision last month to suspend New START, the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty; saying that the treaty is in the interests of both the countries and that the world expects the nations to behave responsibly when it comes to nuclear security. The treaty was originally set to expire in February 2021, but President Biden reached an agreement with Putin to extend New START for five years shortly after taking office. Last year, the United States and Russia committed to create a new agreement “to achieve deeper, irreversible, and verifiable reductions in their nuclear arsenals.”

On Thursday during a press conference, Blinken said he urged Russia to return to implementing New START during his meeting with Lavrov:  “Mutual compliance is in the interest of both our countries, it’s also what people around the world expect from us as inferior products…I told the foreign minister that no matter what else is happening in the world in our relationship, the United States are always ready to engage and act on Strategic Arms, just as the United States in the Soviet Union did even at the height of the Cold War.”

Blinken also stressed the need for the Kremlin to release U.S. citizen and former Marine Paul Whelan, who was arrested in Russia in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in jail on espionage charges. Blinken noted: “The United States has put forward a serious proposal. Moscow should accept it. We’re determined to bring Paul and every other American citizen who is unjustly detained around the world home. We won’t rest until we do.” Blinken and Lavrov’s last phone call occurred last July when they discussed a proposal for the release of Whelan and WNBA star Brittney Griner.

Additionally, Blinken underscored continued U.S. support for Ukraine, and stressed that Ukraine and the U.S. want Russia’s war to end on that basis. Referring to his conversation with Lavrov, Blinken told reporters: “End this war of aggression. Engage in meaningful diplomacy that could produce a just and durable peace. [Ukrainian] President Zelenskyy has put forward a 10-point plan for a just and durable peace. The United States stands ready to support Ukraine on the diplomacy to end the war on this basis. [Russian] President Putin has demonstrated zero interest in engaging, saying there’s nothing to even talk about, unless and until Ukraine accepts and I quote ‘the new territorial realities’ while doubling down on his brutalization of Ukraine.”

Whatever's next from Brothers Osborne, well, TJ and John are working on it

Brothers Osborne haven’t released a new album since Skeletons came out in October 2020. And if you’re anxious for new music from the CMA and ACM Duo of the Year, well, just know it’s at the top of their list.

“We took about, I don’t know, four months off from the road to get ready for this next album, which is another thing that we’re working on,” TJ tells ABC Audio. “We’ve been writing a ton. I have a lot of songs that I’m really excited about, and [we’re gonna] try to take this thing to the next level. That’s really kinda the biggest thing I think we’re focusing on is our next album.”

While John and his wife, fellow artist Lucie Silvas, are expecting twins, he and TJ agree new music is a priority.

“I think all artists, they put an album out and they immediately want to record another one,” TJ says, as John agrees: “100%.”

“We’re definitely that way every time,” TJ adds.

“Because by the time you’re done recording, the process – as fun as it can be – it can be very arduous,” John explains. “And by the end, you’ve heard the songs a million times. It’s been two years since you may have written some of those songs. So by the time it gets there, you’re like, ‘All right, let’s record another record.'”

Of course, John also produced Ashley McBryde‘s Grammy-nominated Lindeville album, and if you need a little Brothers to tide you over, TJ’s featured on the track “Play Ball.”
