Joran van der Sloot, prime suspect in Natalee Holloway disappearance, arrives in U.S.

Joran van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of American Natalee Holloway in Aruba, arrived in the United States to face charges of extortion and wire fraud. On Thursday, van der Sloot was transferred to U.S. law enforcement custody in Lima, Peru, and a plane departed at 9 a.m. Eastern carrying him to Birmingham, Alabama. It was unclear when he might first appear in a U.S. court.

van der Sloot was indicted in the U.S. on extortion and wire fraud charges in 2010 in connection with an offer he allegedly made to sell information about the whereabouts of Holloway’s remains to her mother, Beth, for $250,000. The indictment alleges that Beth Holloway paid van der Sloot some of that money directly, and made another payment through a lawyer, but the information turned out to be false.

van der Sloot, a Dutch national, lived on the Caribbean island nation of Aruba when then 18-year-old Holloway went missing during a high school senior trip. She was last seen alive leaving a bar with van der Sloot; but noone has ever been charged in her disappearance, and her body has never been found. In 2012, an Alabama judge declared her deceased.

van der Sloot is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in Peru for the 2010 murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, whom he confessed to killing in his hotel room in Lima. Temporary extradition is allowed under the terms of a 2001 treaty between the U.S. and Peru, where a suspect can face trial in the other country. van der Sloot will remain in the U.S. until the end of the American criminal proceedings, and is then expected to be returned to Peru to complete his sentence.

Carly Pearce confirms split from boyfriend Riley King after 2 years together

Carly Pearce confirmed her split from boyfriend Riley King after two years of dating, telling People that she and King ultimately weren’t a good fit.  Said the 33-year-old Pearce: “For the most part, it was great. People date to see if they’re gonna go the distance, and we weren’t. We just simply were not right for each other, and that’s the bottom line. I am on such a beautiful journey, and I am really excited about the next chapter of my life.”

King had also confirmed the split to Page Six, sharing: “Yes, things didn’t work out. Carly and I have parted ways and I wish her nothing but the best in both her career and personal life.” Pearce was previously married to country music singer Michael Ray; the former couple split in June 2020 after eight months of marriage.

Pearce will release her latest single “We Don’t Fight Anymore” with Chris Stapleton on June 16.  She said on Instagram that the song explores feeling distant in a relationship: “This song embodies a place that I think, if we are honest with ourselves, we’ve all felt at some point in a relationship. The distance that feels heartbreaking, yet you’re also indifferent. I’ve always been a writer who never wanted to shy away from the ‘uncomfortable’ moments in all of our lives, and this song feels too important not to share. @chrisstapleton, you made my dreams come true by lending your incredible talents to this song.”

Dierks left his autograph on a baby's head: “I didn't want to do it”

Albums, posters and T-shirts aren’t the only things artists have to sign sometimes. There are other items like boots, cowboy hats and bandanas, especially if you’re a country singer.

But, those are a far cry from one of the most bizarre things Dierks Bentley recalls autographing: “A baby's head.”

“Yeah, like a 2-week-old baby. I didn't want to do it. I didn't want to do it. The woman was like, ‘Please.’ I was like, ‘Alright,'” Dierks recounts. “The head at that point is so vulnerable, transparent, so I'm just hoping they didn't get any ink in the child's brain.”

Dierks will be wearing multiple hats at this week’s CMA Fest. On Thursday, June 8, he’ll take the CMA Close Up Stage inside Fan Fair X for an Artist of the Day conversation hosted by Charlie Worsham. On Sunday, June 11, the “Gold” singer will perform his hits and more at Nissan Stadium.

Additionally, Dierks has been tapped to co-host CMA Fest with Lainey Wilson and Elle King. The three-hour television special is slated to air July 19 on ABC.
