Two charged with murder in death of 1-year-old at NYC day care due to fentanyl exposure

Police confirm that two people have been arrested on murder charges after a 1-year-old died and three other children were hospitalized following suspected exposure to opioids at a Bronx, New York daycare on Friday. The 1-year-old, Nicholas Dominici, died; and three other children were hospitalized after being exposed to fentanyl at the daycare. A spokesperson for the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner said Nicholas’s cause and manner of death was under investigation.

The two suspects — Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, and Grei Mendez, 36 — were arrested Saturday night on multiple counts of manslaughter, assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance and narcotic drug and endangering the welfare of a child. Brito and Mendez’s relationship to the day care center was not immediately apparent. It was also not immediately clear whether Brito and Mendez have lawyers who could speak on their behalf.

Police said that a 911 call came in just after 2:40 p.m. on Friday, and upon arrival at the daycare facility, officers discovered Dominici unconscious and unresponsive. The child was later pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center upon arrival. Officers also found an unconscious 2-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl, who were also transported to Montefiore; the boy is in critical condition and the girl is stable condition. New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that first responders also administered Narcan to the three children who they found at the day care center. Upon executing a search warrant at the day care, NYPD officials found a “kilo press,” which Kenny described as an item “commonly used by drug dealers when packaging large quantities of drugs.”

A third child, a 2-year-old boy, was also hospitalized at BronxCare Health System in stable condition. Detective Kenny said that the third child’s mother took him to the hospital herself after picking him up from the day care center around 12:15 p.m. that day and noticing that he was “acting lethargic and unresponsive” once they returned home. At the hospital, staff administered Narcan, the opioid overdose antidote, to save the boy’s life.

According to Kenny and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Ashwin Vasan, the day care center was a home-based center licensed by the state of NY, and was last inspected by officials with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on Sept. 9. No violations were found at that time, and Vasan added that it was a surprise inspection that the day care officials did not have advance notice of. Vasan said that the day care center, which opened in January, had had two routine inspections early on to secure its license.

Jordan Davis loved celebrating the country music community at ACM Honors

Get ready for another star-studded special: ACM Honors.

The 16th annual Academy of Country Music Honors is airing on Fox September 18. This year’s ACM Special Awards honorees include Tim McGraw (ACM Icon Award), Chris Stapleton (ACM Triple Crown Award), Kane Brown (ACM International Award) and former Universal Music Group Nashville CEO Mike Dungan (ACM Icon Award).

The show will also feature a plethora of performances, including Brett Young‘s cover of Tim’s “Don’t Take The Girl,” Lee Brice‘s spin on Kane’s “Like I Love Country Music” and Jordan Davis‘ performance of “Buy Dirt” with Christian artist Anne Wilson.

For Jordan, being at this year’s ACM Honors goes beyond the hype of singing onstage. It’s about being in the same room with his peers, and celebrating those in the spotlight and behind the scenes.

“Anytime I get to see buddies and people that I haven’t seen in a long time, it’s awesome. But also, too, we get to honor the people behind the scenes, the people that we see on an everyday basis on the road that’s kind of our home away from home,” Jordan tells the press at this year’s ACM Honors.

“A lot of the people that are here tonight, they kind of take care of us when we’re on tour busses,” he says. “So it’s good for us to be able to get together and say thank you.”

The 16th annual ACM Honors airs September 18 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Maren Morris reveals she’s leaving the country music industry

Maren Morris released two new songs – “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here” — and announced she’s leaving the country music industry. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Morris revealed that she’s leaving the country music genre, and moving forward will release music on Columbia Records, instead of Columbia Nashville. Morris opened up about her decision to “take a step back,” explaining that she’s felt “very, very distanced” from industry and its politics.  When asked if it’s been a good year or a bad year for  country music, Morris said: “I’ve tried to avoid a lot of it at all costs. I feel very, very distanced from it.”

Morris said she didn’t originally think of herself as a “political artist,” but her support for gender-affirming healthcare and addressing the lack of LGBTQ+ representation in country has made waves in recent years. Morris said: “After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display. It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.”

She explained she isn’t afraid of criticizing country music and its audience: “Country music is a business, but it gets sold, particularly to young writers and artists who come up within it, as almost a god. It kind of feels like indoctrination.  If you truly love this type of music and you start to see problems arise, it needs to be criticized. Anything this popular should be scrutinized if we want to see progress.”  She says she’s reached a point where she’s “kind of said everything I can say … I always thought I’d have to do middle fingers in the air jumping out of an airplane, but I’m trying to mature here and realize I can just walk away from the parts of this that no longer make me happy … I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over, but it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Justin Bieber joins SZA on acoustic remix of her hit song, “Snooze”

SZA released the music video for her hit song Snooze a few weeks ago, starring Justin Bieber, actors Woody McClain and Young Mazino, and producer/songwriter Benny Blanco. In the video, each of the men portray a love interest for SZA, mirroring the lyrics of the song that verbalize the feelings that come with intense romance.

Now SZA has released an acoustic version of ‘Snooze’, with vocal help from her video guest star, Bieber himself. And just hours after her new Bieber collab, SZA also made a guest appearance on Drake’s new song “Slime You Out,” the lead single for his upcoming album For All The Dogs.

SZA is set to head back out on the road at the end of September for a second leg of North American shows in support of SOS — and she also just announced a deluxe version of SOS is on the way, entitled Lana.

Enjoy some of Darius Rucker's “Southern Comfort”

Darius Rucker has dropped a nostalgic new song, “Southern Comfort.”

Chris LaCorte, Matt Rogers and Josh Osborne penned the track, and the breezy hometown ode finds Darius reliving heartwarming memories of life back home.

“That gentle breeze makes me think I'm three sheets to the wind/ When the fireflies light me up right makes the whole world spin/ If sunsets were like whiskey, man, I'd be seeing double/ Ain't nothing in this bottle gets me drunk as Southern Comfort,” Darius sings over a rootsy neotraditional production.

“Southern Comfort” is the latest preview of Darius’ forthcoming album, Carolyn’s Boy, and follows earlier releases “Fires Don’t Start Themselves” and “Have A Good Time.”

Of the project’s title, Darius told NBC’s Today in November 2022, “I wanted to name the record Carolyn's Boy because Mom never got to see any of my success. She died before any of this happened, so it's just another homage to the greatest woman I've ever known.”

Carolyn’s Boy arrives October 6 and can preordered now.
