Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson elected 56th Speaker of the House

Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson won the House speaker election on Wednesday afternoon in a 220-209 vote on party lines. All 220 Republicans cast their vote for Johnson, while all 209 Democrats voted for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York. Johnson now becomes second in line to the presidency, finally putting an end to an unprecedented three weeks of disarray among House Republicans after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the position in a first-of-its-kind recall on Oct. 3.  Johnson said in his address to the House chamber after his election: “We want our allies around the world to know that this body of lawmakers is again to our duty stations. Let the enemies of freedom around the world hear us loud and clear — the people’s House is back in business.”

After McCarthy’s ouster, Republicans initially nominated Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, but he learned he would not have enough votes to win the formal speaker election on the House floor and withdrew from consideration. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan was next selected as the new Republican House speaker nominee but after three rounds of voting Jordan was also unable to secure the number of votes needed to win. Current House majority whip, Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer, was then chosen as the party’s third-choice nominee on Tuesday, but he also dropped out when it became clear that he would not have the necessary 217 votes to become the House speaker in a floor vote.

The House Republican Conference then nominated Johnson, 51, on Tuesday evening, hours after Emmer withdrew his name. Johnson served as a deputy whip for the House GOP and sits on the House Judiciary Committee. He is in his fourth congressional term and, has maintained a relatively low national profile, representing his northwestern Louisiana district since 2017.

Johnson — an election denier and far-right Donald Trump ally whose political positions are largely attributed to his ultraconservative religious views, which have led him to fight for prayer in public schools and lobby against reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ freedoms. He introduced a bill in 2022 aiming to ban mention of sexual orientation and gender identity in federally funded institutions, called the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act. Johnson was one of the leaders of the GOP effort to keep former president Trump in power after his defeat to Joe Biden in 2020. Johnson led the amicus brief, signed by 100 Republicans, backing a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the 2020 election results in four swing states won by Biden.

Chris Janson knew “All I Need Is You” was a hit even before it became one

Chris Janson is grateful that “All I Need For You” has become a hit, but he’s not surprised.

Though it’s not a song fans were familiar with right out the gate, Chris says its trajectory was indicative that he had his next hit in his hands.

“With hit songs, sometimes before they’re a hit, people just don’t know them. They’re unfamiliar. And so it takes a minute until they really become a hit for them to start singing it,” Chris tells ABC Audio. “People really embraced [‘All I Need Is You’] from the very beginning, before it was even charted. So I had [a] good indication that it was probably something really special, and it is.”

Now, not only is “All I Need Is You” ascending the country charts, but it’s also become a go-to song for special occasions like weddings and proposals.

“People are using it as wedding songs and walk-down-the-aisle songs and proposal songs and things like that, which is not why I wrote it. It’s very flattering, you know? I’m so grateful for it. And it is absolutely my love story,” says Chris.

“It’s interesting. Sometimes you hear over the years, ‘Well, maybe you should try to write something different’ or maybe this or that. And I’m like, ‘Nah, I just write about the things that I know and I love. And you know me, I just write about my life,'” he shares.

“All I Need Is You” is #13 and rising on the country charts. It’s the lead single off Chris’ latest album, The Outlaw Side Of Me, which arrived in June.

Toby Keith to play two Las Vegas concerts amid cancer battle

Toby Keith will play two concerts at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas on Dec. 10 and 11, marking his two first headlining shows since revealing his cancer diagnosis in June 2022. The shows coincide with the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The 62-year-old Keith said in a video announcement: “Hey everybody! This is Toby Keith. It’s been a while. You know what I’ve been doing — been on the old rollercoaster, but Almighty’s riding shotgun. He’s letting me drive for some reason, but we’re making a big announcement. I’m doing a little deal and thought I’d start in the great Las Vegas. I was going to sit around here and do nothing like I have been, or get up and go outside and don’t let the old man in. It’ll be my first two shows. They’re kind of rehab shows — get the band back in sync, get me rolling again. First time in my whole life I’ve been off over two years. I’ve never been off a year in my life.”

After being diagnosed with stomach cancer in fall 2021, Keith has taken a two-year break from music. He appeared at the first People’s Choice Country Awards in Nashville to accept the Country Icon Award during the ceremony.  Keith shared that he’s “doing all right” and said, “I lean on my faith and I just pray and lean into it. It was my rock.”  Keith also acknowledged the struggle is “a roller coaster … You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down… It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero, but I feel good today.”

The concerts will take place on Dec. 10 and 11 at Dolby Live Park MGM Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 and will be available at ticketmaster.com.

Adele adds 32 dates to Las Vegas Residency

Adele has added 32 dates to her Las Vegas residency, with the new shows extending ‘Weekends With Adele’ at the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace through next June. The announcement marks the second time that Adele has added dates to the original three-month residency; back in March, she added 34 dates through Nov. 4.

Adele posted on social media: “This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have. I needed to reconnect with my songs and remember what they mean to me, and I have! Being on stage over the last year so up close and personal with an audience again after all these years has been a truly extraordinary restorative experience that I’ll never forget. All the hilarious, soulful, wild and heartbreaking interactions we’ve had are banked in my mind for life. The looks on your faces, seeing you laugh and cry together singing your hearts out and hoarding bags of confetti. All the simi dolls, friendship bracelets, flowers, facetime calls and flags. It’s crazy how joyful a show full of sad songs can be!! I’ve felt so much and learned so much about myself and you. It’s humanized everything I thought was scary. Mostly though – it’s just made me realize how much I really enjoy being on stage, that I’m bloody good at it and that it is 100% where I belong! So let’s go one last time before I turn into a showgirl forever! Love you and I’ll see you on the other side soon x”

The final leg of the residency begins Friday, January 19, 2024, and runs through Saturday, June 15, 2024. Registration is open via Ticketmaster Verified Fan. Fans will be randomly selected to receive a code that grants them access beginning Thursday, October 26th.
