Dua Lipa drops her new single ‘Houdini’

Dua Lipa’s new single, titled “Houdini” just dropped, after the hitmaker teased the music for weeks, sharing cryptic posts – one of which featured a photo of her holding a key between her teeth (a nod to the famous Hungarian-American illusionist Harry Houdini.)

Dua’s third studio album will be released sometime in 2024, with Lipa also sharing that this record will have a different sound, but she is keeping it pop, “lest her ‘fans have a meltdown,” (as she was quoted as saying.) Dua also said she doesn’t want to “alienate” her fans, but her new sound on the album will see her move away from disco and embrace the sounds of “1970s-era psychedelia.”

“Houdini’ marks the first new solo music released Dua since her 2020 LP, Future Nostalgia.  You can now stream ‘Houdini’ – here.

Belmont University freshman dies from stray bullet while at local park in Nashville

Officials confirmed that a Nashville college student has died a day after she was shot in the head by a stray bullet while walking on a trail near the campus of Belmont University.  The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a news release that the Belmont University freshman, 18-year-old Jillian Ludwig of New Jersey, was shot Tuesday afternoon as she walked on a track in Edgehill Memorial Gardens Park. She was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition after a passerby found her lying on the ground. The department later shared on social media Thursday morning: “Sadly, Jillian Ludwig passed away during the night.”

A suspect is in custody in the shooting, which happened around 2:24 p.m. Shaquille Taylor, 29, was quickly identified as a suspect and taken into custody. Police said the gunfire came from a public housing unit across the street from the park and that Taylor was allegedly shooting at a car when a stray bullet struck Ludwig. Taylor was charged with aggravated assault and evidence tampering and is being held on a $280,000 bond. Police said Thursday they were in discussion with the district attorney’s office about modifying his charges.

Authorities said the suspect had previously been released for incompetence to stand trial in a separate shooting. At the time of Ludwig’s shooting, Taylor had a warrant for failing to appear in court stemming from a Sept. 21 arrest in a grocery store parking lot. Taylor was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck that had been carjacked by two men wearing ski masks on Sept. 16. Taylor, who did not admit to being involved in the carjacking, was charged with felony auto theft and was released on a $20,000 bond.

Ludwig was a freshman music business major and was remembered by the university as an “engaged member of our community” who loved “music and its incredible power.” Belmont University President Lorentz Gregory Jones shared: “This is a lot for us all to process. We grapple now with grief, anger, anxiety and a strong sense of fear in the face of senseless violence.”

Ludwig’s family said they were “beyond devastated” by her death, saying: “Jillian was a creative, compassionate, fearless young woman. She was thriving in her freshman year of college and on the cusp of so many successes. She was senselessly robbed of those opportunities and we will miss her dearly every day forever.”

Puerto Rico declares flu epidemic with 42 deaths, over 900 hospitalizations

On Thursday, health officials in Puerto Rico declared an influenza epidemic in the U.S. territory. Health officials said there were plenty of vaccines, tests and treatments available on the island; however, the island has struggled with a deteriorating health care system, which experts say was worsened by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Fiona last September.

Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico, Carlos Mellado López, said on social media:“Today we declared an influenza epidemic after registering a sustained increase in cases, hospitalizations and fatalities throughout the island of people infected with the virus. The call is to join the prevention measures to confront the spread of this virus.”

Mellado said that at least 25,900 cases have been reported since July, with 42 deaths and more than 900 hospitalizations on the island of 3.2 million people. Epidemiologist Melissa Marzán noted that officials have seen nearly six times more cases so far this year compared with the same period last year; Mellado said that those who are 0 to 19 years old have been most affected, with more than 13,600 cases reported in that population.

Ashley McBryde knew she wanted to embark on her sobriety journey privately

Ashley McBryde decided to quit drinking alcohol in June 2022, and no one in the public knew about it.

The decision to keep it hush-hush was very much intentional for the “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” singer.

“I decided that I wasn't gonna talk about it at all until at least a year, because what I didn't need was people on social media being like, ‘Ashley McBryde swears off alcohol!'” Ashley tells People in a recent interview. “All people are gonna do is just wait for you to screw up, and that’s really annoying. I did it for me. I didn’t do it for social media.”

Now sober for over a year, Ashley says she’s noticed changes in many aspects of her life, including her physical appearance and vocals – all of which have been aided by exercise, healthier eating habits and therapy.

“It's the best I've felt, the best I've looked,” she shares, “and the difference in my voice . If you had told me even 10 years ago, you think you love your voice? You should hear it without drinking, because along with drinking comes smoking for me.”

Ashley’s currently #21 on the country charts with “Light On in the Kitchen,” the lead single off her latest album, The Devil I Know.
