Ex-Trump adviser Peter Navarro sentenced to 4 months in jail

On Thursday, former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro was sentenced to four months in jail and ordered to pay a $9,500 fine on two charges of contempt of Congress, after his refusal to comply with a subpoena related to a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of failing to comply with subpoenas the House select committee investigating the Capitol riots requesting that he provide documents and testimony, claiming former President Donald Trump gave him executive privilege. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said in court that Navarro’s punishment was of his “own making” and criticized the former Trump adviser for claiming his prosecution was politically motivated. Judge Mehta said during the sentencing hearing: “I guess what bothers me ultimately is that here we are after a year and a half plus and you still want to suggest to me that this is a political prosecution. You want me to believe this is a political prosecution. When the evidence is completely to the contrary.”

Navarro, 74, told Judge Mehta at his sentencing hearing in federal court Thursday that he had “an honest belief” that executive privilege had been invoked by former President Donald Trump when he received the subpoena — an argument that prosecutors had disputed at trial. The prosecution previously had asked Mehta to impose a prison sentence of six months and a fine of $600,000. Navarro’s council sought a lesser sentence not exceeding six months of probation and a fine of $100,000. The implementation of Mehta’s sentence could be delayed as Navarro’s attorneys have hinted they will appeal his conviction.

The Justice Department said in a filing ahead of the sentence: “The defendant, like the rioters at the Capitol, put politics, not country first and stonewalled Congress’ investigation. The defendant chose allegiance to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law.”

At the end of the day, Conner Smith's just a dream-chasing Tennessee kid

The wait is over: Conner Smith‘s debut album, Smoky Mountains, has finally arrived.

Out now via The Valory Music Co., the 12-track project boasts a collection of life-inspired songs that chronicle Conner’s Tennessee roots, upbringing, longtime singer/songwriter dream and more.

“That’s kind of been the story I wanted to tell: kid from Nashville, kid [whose] whole life has been about [figuring out] how to become a great songwriter. That’s the process I’m still learning,” Conner shares. “I think this record is really just a look into where I’m at now and [the] success [we’ve had].”

“It’s also broader Nashville, really a Tennessee kid, right?” he adds. “We [were] just up in Boston [on January 18] and there were 20 Tennessee jerseys in the crowd, you know? Because people really bought into like, ‘He’s a Tennessee guy,’ and I love that.”

Despite being a Nashville native, Conner named his album after the Smokies because of its larger symbolism: dwelling and rest.

“To me, [the] Smoky Mountains symbolized the icon of home for me of Tennessee,” explains the 23-year-old. “Over the last couple years of really chasing down this dream and playing hundreds of shows and sometimes selling out and sometimes selling 100 tickets and just the chase of it, the Smoky Mountains symbolized the rest.”

“It symbolized home and the beauty of this place I’m from,” the “Creek Will Rise” singer adds.

Conner will celebrate his album release with a sold-out hometown show in Music City on Friday, January 26. If you weren’t able to get tickets, you can watch it via livestream on Conner’s YouTube and Facebook page.

Upcoming dates for his Creek Will Rise tour can be found at connersmithmusic.com.

Here’s the Smoky Mountains track list:

Eric Church + Morgan Wallen bring 'Field & Stream' back to print

It’s more than “Man Made a Bar” for Eric Church and Morgan Wallen.

The country stars have joined forces again, alongside a team of experienced brand builders, to revive the historic Field & Stream magazine in print.

“I can remember my grandfather kept a few of his favorite Field & Stream magazines on the dash of his truck. That truck took us on hundreds of outdoor adventures and I all but memorized every story and every picture on every page,” says Eric.

“They were my Bible. It is the honor of my life to make sure that legacy carries on,” he reflects. “It is both this responsibility to an American Icon and also to a young boy in his papaw's truck that will be the compass that guides our steps.”

Morgan adds, “There's nothin' I love more than being with friends around a campfire, on a boat or in a deer stand — and Field & Stream represents all of those to me. Being part of its future is incredible and we want to keep bringing people together outdoors, makin' memories, for generations to come.”

The biannual print issues of Field & Stream will be available exclusively via the newly launched Field & Stream 1871 Club.
