Ford recalling nearly 2 million Explorer SUVs due to pieces of trim flying off

Ford is recalling nearly 1.9 million Explorer SUVs in the U.S. because a trim piece can fly off and create a hazard for other drivers. Documents posted Wednesday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that clips holding the trim that covers the roof supports close to the windshield can come loose; and if that happens, the trim piece can fly off and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall covers Explorers from the 2011 through 2019 model years; it comes after U.S. regulators opened an investigation into the problem last January after receiving 164 consumer complaints. Canadian regulators also inquired about the problem.

According to the documentation from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford initially decided against a recall, citing the low mass of the part, but decided to do the recall after U.S. regulators determined the problem was a safety hazard. Consumers can also reach the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit www.nhtsa.gov.

Ford said in a statement Wednesday that it expects only 5% of the recalled Explorers to be affected by the problem, and it encourages owners to contact dealers for an inspection when parts are available. Dealers will inspect the trim pieces to make sure the clips are engaged and add adhesive to hold them in place. The company said that it’s aware of 568 consumer complaints and more than 14,000 warranty reports alleging that the parts were missing or detached. Ford said it is not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem.

Owners will be notified starting March 13, with a second letter to follow when a remedy is available. Consumers with questions about their vehicles can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 24S02.

A Boeing 757 passenger jet loses nose wheel just before takeoff

The nose wheel of a Delta Airlines Boeing 757 jet fell off and rolled away while the plane was waiting on the runway for takeoff clearance. According to a preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration, Delta Air Lines Flight 982 was prepping for takeoff from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta on Saturday when the wheel “came off and rolled down the hill.”

Boeing declined to comment, instead directing inquiries to the airline. Delta said Wednesday that Flight 982 had 172 passengers, in addition to two pilots and four crew members, bound for Bogotá, the capital of Colombia.  Passengers were removed from the plane and later put on a replacement flight, with no injuries reported. Delta said in a statement Wednesday: “Delta Flight 982 ATL/BOG was taxiing for departure when a nose gear tire came loose from the landing gear. All customers and their bags were removed from the aircraft, transferred to the gate and onto a replacement aircraft. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.” The plane was put back into service the next day, Delta said. According to an online record of the plane’s history, it has been active since 1992.

The latest incident with a Boeing aircraft comes weeks after a panel on an Alaska Airlines flight blew out midflight, prompting the grounding of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes nationwide and an ongoing investigation. Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said that an internal investigation had found that “many” Max 9 planes were found to have loose bolts.  In a separate incident, another Boeing plane, a 747 cargo jet, was seen spewing flames into the sky over Miami last week.

'Good Lookin' Cookin'': Dolly Parton's here to help feed your family

A week after her 78th birthday, Dolly Parton‘s back at work promoting the latest additions to her Duncan Hines baking mixes.

The newest offerings include muffins – blueberry, cinnamon and banana nut – as well as classic chocolate and yellow cake. Plus, the new buttermilk pancake mix represents a major expansion: it’s the first in ConAgra’s line of Dolly Parton branded products, ones that will eventually extend far beyond the baking aisle.

“I wanted to have foods that I grew up with, foods that I know people like, the comfort foods,” Dolly says, envisioning future additions. “We’re concentrating on those good old Southern meals that people like, whether it be meatloaf and chicken and dumplings, whether it be pork roast and potatoes, and all the good stuff that [goes] along with it.”

If you’re looking for more of Dolly’s kitchen secrets, they’ll arrive this fall, as she’s preparing a long-awaited cookbook that’ll finally be widely available.

“I have done cookbooks before at Dollywood and sold ’em mostly at the park and online,” she explains. “But I have taken a lot of those same recipes that have been in those books and brought them over into a new cookbook that I’m doing with my sister Rachel, who is a great cook, and she has some great recipes.”

“It’s called Good Lookin’ Cookin’,” Dolly reveals, as she lapses into singing the classic Hank Williams song that’s its inspiration.

Dolly’s new Duncan Hines mixes are hitting store shelves now, while her new cookbook will arrive in September.

Attorney for Chris Young demands charges be dropped after video disputes claims surrounding his arrest

Speaking out after the arrest of his client Chris Young on Monday, his attorney is calling for the charges against Young to be dropped in light of the release of video of the alleged assault on a state agent. Young, 38, was charged Monday night with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assault on an officer.

Young’s attorney Bill Ramsey said in a statement: “What happened to my client Chris Young at a bar in Nashville on Monday night was wrong, and he never should have been arrested and charged in the first place. In light of the video evidence, Tennessee ABC needs to drop the charges and apologize for the physical, emotional and professional harm done towards my client.”

According to arrest affidavits filed in the case, Young was approached by Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC) agents doing compliance checks at Tin Roof on Demonbreun Street in Nashville. After presenting an ID, the agents scanned it then handed it back to Young, when the country singer began asking the agents questions about their actions and started video recording them. The agents moved next door to Dawg House, with Young and his friends following.  As the agents tried to leave Dawg House, Young put his hands up as if stopping the agent and “struck me on the shoulder.”

Along with attorney Ramsey’s statement, several shots from different angels of the incident at Dawg House were released (no video from Tin Roof was released). None of the video released captured any of the argument between Young and the agents. In one video, Young turns toward the agents and reaches his hand out toward one agent’s arm or shoulder, when the agent shoves Young backwards. Young then loses his footing, trips over a barstool and falls to the ground. After getting up from the floor, Young puts his arms out to his side and starts to back away from the agent. Young’s friends are seen getting between Young and the agent, with other patrons of the bar standing. Young was arrested shortly afterward.

Following his arrest, Young was taken into custody and later released on bonds of $250 for the disorderly conduct charge, $1,000 for the resisting arrest charge and $1,250 for the assault charge. He’s set to appear in court on Feb. 16.
