Nashville notes: Sam Williams + Carter Faith cover Tammy Wynette, and more

Rising country artists Sam Williams and Carter Faith have dropped an ethereal cover of Tammy Wynette‘s 1976 hit “‘Til I Can Make It on My Own.” “Tammy Wynette being the legend she is, it was an honor to reinvent her beautiful words,” says Sam. Carter adds, “I have always adored the honesty that Tammy wrote with and this song is such a beautiful example of that, heartbreaking and hopeful at the very same time.”

Chase Rice has released a monochrome music video for “Oklahoma.” “This song was inspired by a trip I took to Oklahoma where I ended up staying for about a week longer than I was supposed to, bird hunting and playing music,” Chase shares. You can find “Oklahoma” on Chase’s latest album, I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell.

To celebrate the release of her new album, Deeper Well, Kacey Musgraves will be heading to NBC’s Today to perform on March 15. You can register for a chance to win a Fan Pass to attend at today.com.

The country icon has teamed up with Sonic to launch Reba’s Sweetheart Meal.

Available at Sonic outlets beginning February 12, the new combo comprises a cheeseburger, tater tots and a newly created chocolate-covered-strawberry shake.

As a longtime fan of Sonic, Reba says she loves numerous items on its menu, including the milkshake in her signature meal.

“I love the footlong [quarter pound] coney. I love their ice. Their ice is the best,” she tells People. “Of course, cherry limeade, I love that. I love all their shakes. But this chocolate covered strawberry shake, I bet I had two of them when we were shooting the commercial. I absolutely love it.”

Reba and her boyfriend Rex Linn, who began dating in 2020, had their first Valentine’s Day date at Sonic. This year, they’re planning to return to the sentimental place for yet another tater tots-filled meal.

“We’re going to be here in Nashville, and we’re going to go to Sonic,” says the “Fancy” singer. “We’re going to hit it and have our favorites. We might even try something new maybe for dessert.”

Scotty McCreery dedicates “Love Like This” to son, Avery

Scotty McCreery‘s tapping into all things fatherhood in his new song, “Love Like This.”

Scotty penned the heartfelt ode with frequent collaborators Frank Rogers and Aaron Eshuis as a tribute to his 1-year-old son, Avery, and wife, Gabi.

“When I first laid eyes on you, that's when I knew/ I've never known a love like this, I've never felt this way/ Girl, I think I might have thought I did/ But everything changed today/ ‘Cause I'm looking at you, looking at him/ And I don't have a clue what this feeling is/ But watching you give our baby boy a kiss/ Now I know I've never known a love like this, no,” goes the real-life-inspired chorus.

“Becoming a father is the greatest thing that's happened to me,” says Scotty. “Raising Avery as he grows and watching my wife Gabi be a rock star as his Mom has been the joy of my life these last 15 months. I knew I wanted to write a song about Avery. I even photographed the room number on the hospital door so I could put that into the lyrics.”

“Love Like This” is the latest preview of Scotty’s forthcoming new album. It was preceded by “Can’t Pass the Bar” and “Cab in a Solo,” which is in the top 15 of the country charts.

Listen to Gwen Stefani + Blake Shelton's new duet, 'Purple Irises'

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton have released their new duet, “Purple Irises.”

The couple throws things back in their respective pre-choruses, with Stefani singing, “It’s not 1999 / But this face is still mine / The way you look at me / I swear my heart hits rewind.”

Shelton, later in the song, sings, “It’s not 2014/ But you still look good in those jeans/ Lookin’ in the mirror/Do you see what I see?”

They come together in the chorus, singing, “But if someone comes along and tries to love you like I love you/ Don’t know what I’d do, don’t wanna lose you/ If someone comes along and tries to take you, tries to make you/ Don’t let ’em change your mind/ Wonder why you took a risk/ On a broken heart you cannot fix/ No, I never knew a love like this/ Now I’m picking purple irises.”

Of their heartfelt duet, Shelton says, “We love this song so much. It's a song Gwen wrote with a couple of friends of hers, and I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. She knew there was something different about it and asked me to come in and sing with her.”

“My longtime producer, Scott Hendricks, produced it, and Gwen's been wanting to work with him for a long time now, and it's turned into this really cool and different song that can live anywhere,” he adds.

“Purple Irises” follows 2021’s “Happy Anywhere” and 2019’s “Nobody but You” – both of which became chart-topping singles.

Stefani is headlining the Super Bowl 58 TikTok Tailgate on Sunday and will perform “Purple Irises” with Shelton during the show. You can watch the performance on @NFL on TikTok.

Senate advances $95B in aid to Ukraine and Israel after rejecting border deal

The Senate voted on Thursday to advance a $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine and Israel. The 67-32 vote came after hours of deliberation among Senate Republicans, who voted against passing the foreign aid along with a bipartisan border security deal on Wednesday.

Senate Republicans said they would only support the standalone foreign aid with assurances that they would have the chance to add new border provisions and others raised concerns with the distribution of aid. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the floor after the vote: “This is a good first step. This bill is essential for our national security. Failure to pass this bill would only embolden autocrats like Putin and Xi, who want nothing more than America’s decline. Now that we are on the bill, we hope to reach an amendment with our Republican colleagues on amendments.”nSchumer said the Senate would keep at it “until the job is done.”

The Thursday vote advances a bill that could send $60 billion to Ukraine, as well as appropriate $14 billion to Israel, $9 billion for humanitarian aid in Gaza and elsewhere, and nearly $5 billion for Taiwan. The package must face a final majority vote in the Senate chamber, and it is unclear how the package would fare in the House, where Republicans failed to pass standalone aid for Israel.

Supreme Court hears arguments over Trump’s eligibility for 2024 ballot

On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard argument on the historic case challenging Donald Trump’s ability to hold office again over his role in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021. The legal battle centers on an obscure provision of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment — Section 3 — ratified shortly after the Civil War.

The High Court signaled skepticism that Colorado had the power to remove former President Donald Trump from the Republican primary ballot because of his actions trying to overturn the 2020 election results. Trump, who has long denied any wrongdoing, asked the justices to overturn an unprecedented Colorado Supreme Court decision deeming him ineligible to appear on the state’s GOP primary ballot because, it said, he “engaged in insurrection.”

A majority of the justices appeared during the two-hour argument alleging that states do not have a role in deciding whether a presidential candidate can be barred from running under a provision of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment that bars people who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office. While the justices raised concerns about states reaching different conclusions on whether a candidate could run, several indicated that only Congress could enforce the provision at issue.

A “prepared” Reba McEntire says singing national anthem at Super Bowl is “not about me”

When Reba McEntire performs “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Sunday’s Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas, it’ll be a journey 50 years in the making. That’s because the legend’s career started when she was discovered while singing the national anthem at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo.

While that does ease some of the pressure, Reba’s still doing her homework.

“I prepare by being prepared. I’ve been singing the national anthem in the shower, when we get in the car,” she says. “Rex [Linn], my boyfriend, is a huge football fan, played all sports when he was going to school.”

“And so he’ll say, ‘OK, sing it one more time.’ I said, ‘I think I know the words real good right now so I’m all right,'” she jokes.

The Country Music Hall of Famer also finds comfort in knowing the crowd will likely be singing along in the moment – one she takes very seriously.

“I am honored beyond words to be chosen to get to sing it,” she reflects. “It means that I get to sing a very special song for all Americans, people all around the world who have really worked so hard for our freedom and to give us peace.”

“And it’s not about me,” she adds. “I’m the representation of this song, and I’m just honored to get to sing it.”

The entertainer, who’s spent plenty of time working in Las Vegas, is particularly proud to be included in Sin City’s first Super Bowl.

You can watch Super Bowl 58 on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
