Canadian wildfire smoke triggers air quality alerts in 4 states across the U.S.

Smoke from wildfires in western Canada has led to air quality alerts in four U.S. states, with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reporting that Canada has 146 active wildfires burning, including dozens in British Columbia and Alberta that are characterized as “out of control.”

In the United States, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have issued alerts as winds carry smoke over these regions.as winds carried plumes of smoke over the region. On Sunday, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an air quality alert in response to a “band of very heavy smoke from wildfires in northeast British Columbia.” The agency said the northern half of the state has since cleared up, but “smoke will linger over southern Minnesota on Monday as northerly winds become light during the day.”

The air quality index, established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to measure daily air pollution levels and communicate the associated risks, reported on Monday that conditions across those four states ranging from “moderate” to “unhealthy” for the general public.

Authorities issued an evacuation order for thousands of residents in Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and Fort Nelson First Nations in British Columbia because of fast moving blazes. According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, Canada experienced its most devastating wildfire season in recorded history last year, with more than 45 million acres burned; and last summer, smoke from wildfires in Quebec affected wide portions of the U.S., sending air quality down into dangerous levels in cities across the Midwest as well as the Eastern Seaboard. The country is once again bracing for a season of increased fire risk.

Small particles in smoke, less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can reach deep inside the lungs, causing inflammation and weakening the immune system. This can exacerbate or increase the risk of asthma, lung cancer, and other chronic lung diseases. Older people, infants, children, and pregnant individuals are most vulnerable when air quality worsens.

A “really, really hot” girl inspired Matt Stell's “Breakin' in Boots”

Country music’s about real-life situations and people, and that’s exactly the story foundation for Matt Stell‘s latest single, “Breakin’ in Boots.”

In a recent interview with ABC Audio, Matt recounted how a chance run-in, well, sort of, with an attractive girl inspired the heartbreak number.

“I wrote it because I was sitting in a bar here in Nashville, and I was watching the game, and I went to tab out, and I looked across the bar and I saw this girl that was really, really hot,” Matt recalls. “I was like, ‘OK, I got to say something. I got to at least hear a ‘no, thank you.’ I looked and she had some boots on.”

“It took a little while and I tabbed out, walked to where she was over by the TouchTunes and couldn’t find her,” he shares. “I never saw her again.”

That missed opportunity catalyzed the writing of “Breakin’ in Boots.”

“The next day I went to write some songs with my buddies and my buddy Ben [Stennis] goes, ‘Hey, I got this song. It’s like, she’ll leave your heart breaking in boots, like breaking in your boots.’ He was like, ‘I’m not sure what that title means.’ I was like, ‘Bro, I know exactly what it means,'” Matt recalls.

“It’s everything I love about a country song. It’s true. It’s about aggressive heartbreak, which is my favorite kind of country music,” he says of “Breakin’ in Boots.” “We’ve been playing it live and, man, it’s been going over great, so I’m excited about it.”

“Breakin’ in Boots” is currently in the top 40 of the country charts. You can find it on Matt’s debut album, Born Lonely, arriving June 7.

Here’s the track list for Born Lonely:

“Built by Broken Hearts”
“Breakin' in Boots”
“Born Lonely”
“Girl Gets Gone”
“Into the Sunrise”
“Smooth”
“The Hard Stuff”
“What We Do Best”
“Take the Girl”
“One Cold Beer at a Time”

Take look at the video for twenty one pilots’ ‘Backslide’ directed by Josh Dun

Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun makes his directorial debut in the just-released video for their song, “Backslide” off their upcoming album, Clancy.

Backslide is the follow-up to the previously-released singles ‘Overcompensate’ and ‘Next Semester,’ and the visual finds singer Tyler Joseph tooling around town on his red and black BMX bike in what appears to be a Groundhog Day-type scenario.  The video also features throwbacks to other moments in the duo’s discography including the bike riding in ‘Stressed Out’, their mascot Ned from the ‘Chlorine’ video, and more.

Last week in a message to fans, frontman Tyler Joseph confirmed that the album’s release would be moving back a week to May 24 in order to allow them to make a music video for every song on the record.  Said Joseph: “When I first told Josh [Dun] and Mark [Eshleman] and everyone on our team that I wanted to do a music video for every song on the album ‘Clancy’ that’s coming up, I told them it’s because I love these songs and I believe in them enough to pretend to sing in front of a camera to each one. And that’s what we’re going to do, because that’s how I want to present this album. But because of that, in order to accomplish that, we need a little bit more time – that’s why I’m making this video. We’re going to push the album back by one week, to May 24th.”

SZA to be honored by Songwriters Hall of Fame with Hal David Starlight award

Billboard reports that the Songwriters Hall of Fame will honor SZA as the 2024 recipient of the eminent Hal David Starlight Award at the 53rd Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner slated for Thursday, June 13th at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

The Hal David Starlight Award, created in 2004, was named in honor of SHOF Chairman Emeritus Hal David, for his longtime support of young songwriters. Award recipients are presented to “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs,” according to the announcement.

SHOF chairman Nile Rodgers said in a statement: “This is such an exciting time for songwriters and music. Phenomenal artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are pushing the envelope of what success looks like, but who could argue that the last two years belong to SZA. Incredible songwriting, incredible performances, incredible artistry. She so deserves to be the 2024 recipient of the Hal David Starlight Award!”

The organization’s top award, The Johnny Mercer Award, will be presented this year to Diane Warren — marking only the second time that both the Mercer Award and the Hal David Starlight Award will be presented to female artists (in 2019, Carole Bayer Sager took the Mercer prize, while Halsey won the Starlight Award).

Previously announced 2024 inductees include Hillary Lindsey; Timothy Mosley — aka Timbaland; Dean Pitchford; R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe) and Steely Dan (Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker). Veteran hitmaker Diane Warren will receive the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award.

Reba McEntire teases “big production” for her ACM Awards performance

When Reba McEntire steps onto the stage as host of the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards on May 16, she looks forward to hearing the “roar of the crowd.”

The country music superstar isn’t just emceeing the awards show for the 17th time – more than any other artist – she’s doing so nearly 30 years after she took home the top prize of Entertainer of the Year in 1995.

“It was a wonderful night,” Reba reminisced in a new interview with Good Morning America ahead of her hosting gig at the 59th ACM Awards. “I was shocked. Thrilled.”

“You work so hard to put on the best show possible, and when I won that, it just gave [me] the enthusiasm and the [positivity to say], ‘They like what I’m doing, so let’s continue on and do more,'” she added.

The crowd will certainly be on its feet when the Grammy winner takes to the ACM Awards stage to perform her new single, “I Can’t,” which she teased as “a big production.”

“I just saw my outfit yesterday. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to [wear] it,” she said. “So, I’m really excited about it.”

Reba described “I Can’t” as “a very strong woman song” that has a lot of the “swampy-type minors” she loves to sing.

“It’s a little different from anything I’ve done in a while,” she said. “So I hope everybody enjoys it.”

As for what she looks for when releasing new music, Reba said it’s always “something different that will grab my heart, because if I love it and it touches my heart when I sing it and I do my job right, it’ll touch your heart.”

The 59th ACM Awards will stream live on Prime Video Thursday, May 16, at 8 p.m. ET.
