Bipartisan border bill fails to advance in Senate for second time

A bipartisan border security bill failed to advance on the Senate floor on Thursday for a second time. Republicans first blocked earlier this year after former President Donald Trump came out publicly against it; the measure fell short in a 43 to 50 vote, which need the 60 votes needed to advance in the upper chamber.

The bill, negotiated by a bipartisan group of senators, was already rejected by most Republicans in February when it was linked to a foreign aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other US allies. Republicans have argued that the president already has the power to stop the flow of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming that the bipartisan deal to expand his authority would do little. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Thursday in a floor speech that “unfortunately, it doesn’t matter what law is on the books if the administration is not going to enforce the ones that already exist.”

Democrats, on the other hand, have attempted to use Republicans’ opposition to the bill in order to shift public opinion in their favor, as voters have been critical of President Biden’s handling of immigration. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday afternoon that “the contrast between Democrats and Republicans is clear today and will be even clearer in November. Democrats want to fix the border and get something done. Republicans want to give speeches, let the border fester and do absolutely nothing to fix the problem.”

In a statement after Thursday’s vote, President Biden said Republicans “put partisan politics ahead of our country’s national security .. Congressional Republicans do not care about securing the border or fixing America’s broken immigration system. If they did, they would have voted for the toughest border enforcement in history,” Biden said, adding that he is “committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system.”

Keith Urban embarked on unorthodox journey for his next album: “This never actually happened to me before”

It’s not every day that you record an album and have it completed, only to return to the drawing board and rework the project. But that’s what happened to Keith Urban when he put together the follow-up to THE SPEED OF NOW: Part 1.

“I’d actually started an album that became this record, and I worked on that for the better part of a year, only to come to the realization when I wrote it in and presented [all these songs] that I went, ‘This isn’t it,'” Keith shares in a recent press interview.

“It was in February last year, and I brought the whole album in, finished, and I could feel as I was playing it that it wasn’t the album,” he says. “‘Messed Up as Me’ was part of that album, so there were certain songs that wanted to be a part of a different record.”

This unorthodox process of creating an album is a first for Keith. Instead of lamenting the extra work required, he trusted his gut and ensured each song fit the project well.

“The vision I had for the album, it was almost like some of the songs started to tell me that there’s another record. ‘We’re part of that record to take us with you. Get back in the studio, get back to writing and finish the album that we’re a part of. We’re not on this record,'” he explains, adding, “‘Messed Up as Me’ is one of those songs.”

‘Straight Line,‘ the first song off this record, was one of the new ones,” he adds. “This never actually happened to me before, where literally, like, the songs told me where they wanted to go and what kind of album they wanted to be a part of.”

Gaga shared a trailer for the film on her social pages, writing: “This film chronicles a time of immense creativity…the fashion, the dance, the music. Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other — you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold-out crowds. The deafening sing-alongs. Chromatica was colorful revenge. The chaos of it all became pure energy and life. Here’s the truth — no matter where life or my career has taken me, my time with you always is a path back to a very powerful part of myself. In a stadium filled with YOU it came to life. Thank you for that feeling. I hope you will feel seen when you watch this film. And know that I edited it carefully to honor you.”

The concert film, originally announced in 2022, was filmed before a sold-out crowd of 52,000 people at Los Angeles’s Dodger Stadium in September of 2022, and features the artist performing such hits as “Bad Romance,” “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Shallow,” “Rain On Me,” “Stupid Love” and more.

Miranda recorded her “pretty honky-tonk” new album in Texas

Love a really country album with steel guitar? Well, Miranda Lambert might just have the record for you.

While Miranda’s still hush-hush about the release date, she did discuss the production style of the project – one that she recorded in the Lone Star State.

“I made this record in Texas, and it meant the world to me. I had not made a record in Texas since I was 18, my independent album,” Miranda tells Variety in a recent interview. “I went there with Jon Randall, who's my partner at Big Loud Texas and my songwriting buddy and one of my best friends in the world, and he co-produced it with me.”

“I just felt like finally, I'm home. I feel like that on the label; I feel like that recording it in Texas,” she says of her debut album with Republic Records and Big Loud. “This music really reflects what made me the artist that I am. I feel like it's pretty honky-tonk, which I'm very excited about. Lots of steel guitar on there.”

As for when the new record could potentially drop, Miranda says that she’s “hoping for fall.”

“That's when we're shooting for. The sooner the better, for me. I'm excited and ready.”

While you wait for the as-yet-untitled project, check out its lead single, “Wranglers.”
