18-year-old volunteer parks employee dies while battling wildfire in upstate NY

An 18-year-old  New York State Forest Ranger and state employee was killed on Saturday  while battling a wildfire in Orange County’s Sterling Forest, near the New York-New Jersey border.

According to state police, Dariel Vasquez, a Parks and Recreation aide employed by the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department, was helping mitigate the forest fire in Greenwood Lake (about 35 miles northwest of New York City.). when he was killed. Greenwood Lake Mayor Tom Howley wrote in a statement “Sadly, we have received news of the line-of-duty death of a NYS Forest Ranger Volunteer. Our deepest condolences go out to their family and fellow rangers.”

Orange County’s Sterling Forest fire is also affecting Passaic County, New Jersey — where it’s been dubbed the Jennings Creek Wildfire, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The Jennings Creek Fire is burning in the area of Greenwood Lake Turnpike and East Shore Road in West Milford, Passaic County, as well as in Orange County, New York.  The NJ Fire Service said that the Jennings Creek Fire has burned 2,500 acres and was 0% contained as of Sunday afternoon. The fire service added that about 25 structures are threatened, though none have been evacuated. The NJ Forest Fire Service said on X: “Multiple fires are burning in Orange County, where County Executive Steve Neuhaus is encouraging residents living near the fires to have an evacuation plan. Forest Fire Service helicopter capable of dropping 350 gallons of water is on scene.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement Sunday: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of one of our New York State Parks employees while responding to a wildfire in Orange County yesterday. My prayers go out to his family, friends and coworkers during this difficult time. With recent drought conditions, there have been multiple wildfires ignited across the state, and we have deployed state assets and agencies to coordinate with local first responders in fighting these fires while closely monitoring air quality as a result of them. The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority, and I urge everyone in impacted areas, especially those vulnerable, to stay alert, monitor air quality, and take necessary precautions to stay safe.”

The Jennings Creek Fire was one of several blazes in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast this weekend amid an ongoing drought, dry air and high winds with 11 million people remaining under fire alerts as of Sunday. Cities under fire alerts include Boston and Hartford.  A slow-moving moisture front is continuing to advance east, bringing much-needed precipitation to the eastern third of the country, which includes the Northeast. Showers will move into the Northeast and mid-Atlantic later Sunday evening and overnight, but rainfall totals will be relatively light, ranging from 0.5 inches to 1 inch.

Arrest made in shooting at Tuskegee University that left 1 dead and 16 injured

An arrest has been made in the shooting at Tuskegee University in Alabama early Sunday that left one dead and 16 injured. The shooting happened as the historically Black university’s 100th Homecoming Week was coming to an end.

The 25-year-old male suspect was found with a weapon while leaving the shooting scene at the university early Sunday; he has been arrested and charged with a federal offense.  A statement released by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency identified the man in custody as Jaquez Myrick of Montgomery and said he was found in possession of a handgun with a machine gun conversion device. The statement did not say whether Myrick was a student at Tuskegee University; he faces a federal charge of possession of a machine gun (per AP News.).

In a statement the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), which includes the State Bureau of Investigation, said that special agents were notified about multiple people shot on the university’s campus at around 1:40 a.m. An 18-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene, the agency said, who identified the victim as “a non-university individual.” Twelve people, including Tuskegee University students, sustained injuries in the shooting and were hospitalized at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery. Four others were injured in the incident but not by gunfire, per the ALEA.

Tuskegee University said in a statement on Sunday afternoon that classes would be canceled on Monday “to ensure the officers and their law enforcement partners are able to continue the investigation as easily as possible. The administration joins the students in mourning the event after such a joyous weekend and will provide grief counselors on Monday in the chapel for students who would like to come together to discuss what has happened. Students should not hesitate to reach out for help through the Student Health Center if they choose to do so privately.”

Emergency responders secured the scene with help from campus authorities and local law enforcement, with Alabama’s State Bureau of Investigation opening a probe into the shooting, which remains active.

Why breakfast is Sam Hunt's 'favorite time of day'

You know Sam Hunt, the country music superstar. But do you know Sam Hunt, the husband and father of two?

In a recent interview, Sam – who’s currently off the road until May 2025 – talked about life at home and how being a dad has been both surreal and amazing.

“I still just sit there and look at them sometimes in the morning at breakfast, like, ‘How did this happen? This feels like overnight,'” Sam shares. “We’ve got two now, there are four of us sitting in here or four of us in the car when we’re driving down the road.

“Two years ago, there was just Hannah and I. But it’s going great,” Hunt says.

“I think breakfast is my favorite time of day,” he adds. “We get up, sit around the table and Lucy is really coming into her own. We’re spending a lot more time together because [my wife] Hannah‘s got her hands full with the new baby. We’re having a blast. It’s great they’re coming along [on tour]. I don’t think I’ve messed anything up too badly yet.”

Taking his family on the road this summer was something Sam enjoyed because of the “little adventures” he had with them, especially his 2-year-old daughter.

“I’m starting to build an actual relationship with Lucy. So, you know, it just deepens that bond and makes the experience even richer,” says Sam. “I’m looking forward to doing that with Lowry when he’s out of his eating and sleeping phase and starting to come into his own. But I’m loving every bit of it.”

“Country House” is Sam’s new single and it’s currently making its way up the country charts. You can find the track on his Locked Up EP, out now.

Nashville Notes: New tracks from Crowe Boys, Carlton Anderson + Chase Wright

Country-folk duo Crowe Boys have dropped a new track, “Let Me Feel Alone,” via Universal Music Group Nashville. “At its core, ‘Let Me Feel Alone’ is about the experience of things not being what you thought they were,” says Ocie Crowe, who wrote the song. “It's about subjecting yourself to this new world you didn't see before and subjecting yourself to the hurt and the pain, and allowing yourself the space to feel and to go through it.”

Carlton Anderson, who launched with his debut single “Drop Everything” in 2018, has released “Let Me Get That for You,” a romantic ode chronicling the depth of Carlton’s selfless love for his sweetheart. The Texas native co-wrote the song with hit songwriters Phil O’Donnell and Monty Criswell.

Chase Wright has rolled out his cover of the holiday classic “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” “It’s one of my favorite Christmas songs. It’s [a] very nostalgic song,” Chase shares in an Instagram Story.

Carly Pearce + Michael Bublé team for 'the greatest Christmas song ever'

For Christmas King Michael Bublé to claim that he’s just recorded “the greatest Christmas song ever,” it’s got to be pretty good, right?

That’s the claim that Michael makes in an Instagram video that shows him and Carly Pearce doing the viral #suspectchallenge: You pretend you’re running from the police while someone else roasts you in an attempt to describe you.

“Suspect won’t wear headphones in the studio because he doesn’t wanna mess up his hair,” Carly says of Michael. “Suspect won’t stop chewing gum, even in a really sad music video,” Michael says of Carly.

The video ends with both of them running and saying, “Suspects just recorded the greatest Christmas song ever.”

Michael, who’s currently serving as a coach on The Voice, wrote in the comments, “Just wait amigos. I don't think I've written something this meaningful since we wrote ‘Home.’ Only broke down 23 times while writing it.”

This won’t be Michael’s first duet with a country star. He previously teamed with Blake Shelton on a duet rendition of Blake’s cover of “Home,” and in 2020 sang with Dolly Parton on her original holiday tune, “Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas.”

No word yet on the title of Carly and Michael’s song, the release date or whether or not it’s part of a larger holiday project.

Jamey Johnson returns with 'Midnight Gasoline,' first album in 14 years

Grammy-nominated country artist Jamey Johnson has returned with Midnight Gasoline, his first album in 14 years.

The 12-track collection features two collabs with Randy Houser recorded in the historic Cash Cabin, previously owned by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and now owned by their son, John Carter Cash

Midnight Gasoline is the first rollout of Jamey’s Cash Cabin Series.

“I've always wanted to make an album there,” says the Grand Ole Opry member. “I went in with an album in mind, where we go in and cut and cut and cut. That is when I knew we were off to the races. This is more than an album; this is a series.”

“The main thing is there is a presence there,” Jamey adds of the famed recording studio. “There is a spirit in the place. Maybe it was born there from Johnny and June, and maybe it was born there from the countless other artists who have come to that studio to record.”

“But there is a spirit there and I love it,” he shares. “It feels like home to me.”

Jamey’s known for songs such as “High Cost of Living,” “That Lonesome Song,” a cover of Hank Cochran‘s “Make the World Go Away” with Alison Krauss and “In Color,” which won CMA and ACM Song of the Year in 2009.

Midnight Gasoline is out wherever you listen to music.
