Hurricane Helene benefit album features 100+ artists including R.E.M., Jason Isbell, Phish, and more

R.E.M., the War on Drugs, Angel Olsen, Fleet Foxes and Jason Isbell are among the dozens of artists contributing new, rare or live tracks to the 136-track digital download LP, Cardinals at the Window.

According to the Bandcamp website, all of the proceeds from Cardinals at the Window will be split evenly among Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR) and BeLoved Asheville.

The project also features new songs from Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, MJ Lenderman, the Go-Betweens, Sharon Van Etten, Little Brother, Sylvan Esso, the Mountain Goats, Hotline TNT, Six Organs of Admittance, Archers of Loaf, Flock of Dimes and Real Estate.

Libby Rodenbough, one of the compilation’s organizers, shared: “In the aftermath of a ‘natural disaster,’ it’s important to situate this manifestation of ecological collapse within a history of inequitable exploitation of land and people. This is a region that has suffered in the name of human progress for a long time. I hope we’re going to take this opportunity to start building a different kind of world in western North Carolina and beyond.”

Added North Carolina music industry veteran Rusty Sutton: “Give what you can. Hug your friends and family. Use our experience to illuminate what, unfortunately, this new future will be like for us all: always on the precipice of climate disaster. It’s a stark, cold reality, and we’ll only get through it together. A friend of mine who stayed behind to spearhead aid efforts in his neighborhood shared these words earlier, and I think they’ll live with me forever: ‘Our terrain wasn’t meant to handle this storm, but our community was built for the aftermath.’”

Cardinals debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Compilation Albums chart, and in the top 10 on both Top Album Sales (No. 5) and Americana/Folk Albums (No. 8).

Nashville Notes: New tunes from Bella Frantz, Kassi Ashton, Vincent Mason + Runaway June

Newcomer Belle Frantz has dropped her debut project, Why I Sing This Way. The Universal Music Group Nashville-issued three-song covers set features Belle’s soul-stirring renditions of Reba McEntire‘s “The Last One to Know,” George Jones“The Grand Tour” and Conway Twitty‘s “Hello Darlin’.” “I am so excited about this. Thank y'all for the love you've already given me. We are just getting started,” Belle says.

Kassi Ashton‘s new pensive holiday track, “Your Angel,” is out. Kassi shares, “I wanted to write a Christmas song that felt authentic to my artistry and the sonic landscape we've built with Made From The Dirt. Bright and cheery Christmas songs have been done over and over, and while they're fabulous, a song for the lonely felt better.”

A groovy mid-tempo tune from Vincent Mason has arrived. It’s called “Speak of the Devil,” and it’s one the country up-and-comer co-wrote. “It's not every day that you pull together a song with someone who has never written before,” Vincent shares of the tug-of-war love song. “To be able to have my friend, Sutton Smith, get to have a first-hand experience on what the writing process looks like and then for him to receive his first songwriting cut makes this a moment and a memory that we'll never forget.”

“Buy My Own Drinks” trio Runaway June are getting into the holiday spirit with a two-song release: their cover of “Mary, Did You Know?” and a spirited original, “Santa, Send Your Reindeer.” “Mr. Kringle bring your jingle! Our rendition of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ and original ‘Santa, Send Your Reindeer’ are both out now,” the group shares in an announcement post on Instagram.

Lee Brice's 'Single Bells' is a twist on a Christmas classic

Lee Brice has dropped “Single Bells” – and yes, it’s a spin on the yuletide classic “Jingle Bells.”

The tongue-in-cheek tune finds Lee playing a forever-alone guy who’s got no one to spend the festive season.

“Everybody’s got somebody this time of year/ To curl up by the fire with/ I just got me, myself, and I/ And the other half of a Jack fifth/ That’s alright, and that’s okay/ Hell, it’s still the holidays/ That’s a reason to celebrate/ So I’m gonna sing,” Lee sings in the opening verse, bemoaning his single status.

The pity party continues in the chorus over a soulful melody.

“Single bells, single bells/ Single all night long/ Drinking whiskey/ Mistletoe tipsy/ Yeah, till the bottle’s gone/ Single bells, single bells/ Hey, y’all, that’s my song/ It’s fine to be alone like me/ If you’re single, sing along,” the “Hard to Love” singer sings almost as if he’s grown content with flying solo over the holidays.

If you’re intrigued by the lyrics, check “Single Bells” wherever you listen to music.

Lee’s You, Me & My Guitar Tour kicks off Jan. 30 in Wilkes-Barre City, Pennsylvania. Tickets are available now at leebrice.com.

'Liberty' has Sam Hunt reflecting on family life

Sam Hunt has released a new track, “Liberty.”

The reflective number finds Sam, a dad of two, thinking about family life and purpose on his journey.

“Baby, give me liberty or give me death/ Forty hours and a day of rest/ Autumn leaves on these county roads/ Grab a hand, y’all, bow your heads/ A bunch of kids, little fertile ground/ Raise ’em up right, pass it down/ Fences keep the cattle in/ But they can’t hold the souls of men/ Fences keep the cattle in/ But they can’t hold the souls of men,” Sam sings in the southern lifestyle ode.

“‘Liberty’ is a song that I wrote back during the pandemic,” Sam tells the press. “It's a song that I never thought I would put out, but as time passed, I decided that it was timely and recorded it.”

“I flew home off the road this fall to get in the studio and get it recorded and get it out,” he says. “So I'm proud of this one and happy to have it out.”
