Cody Johnson's love for country songs & cattle inspire his cowboy dreams

In November, just after winning CMA Album of the Year for Leather, Cody Johnson was ready to get back to his life on the ranch in Texas.

“We just shipped out a bunch of calves last week, and [we’re] getting some new cows pulled in: a couple of new bulls and we’re going with some different breeds,” he explained. “Like, I breed Braford cows, which [you get from] a Hereford bull and Brahman cows. And I think we’re fixing to get into the black Angus business a little bit for some more beef-type cattle.”

“And that’s when I go home and flip the switch off,” he told ABC Audio. “I mean, I’m not Cody Johnson the singer. I’m the rancher, the husband, the dad and, you know, I take my kids hunting and fishing and all that. And then whenever I get to come out here [to Nashville], I flip the switch and turn into this guy.”

In 2024, Cody topped the chart with both “The Painter” and “Dirt Cheap,” accomplishments that are equally close to his heart.

“Country songs are what I live for,” he said backstage after picking up his CMA trophy. “Besides [my wife] Brandi, besides our two beautiful daughters, it’s the only thing in life for me that’s a constant. It’s in my blood. It’s in my DNA. I wake up with it every day in the forefront of my mind, trying to make country music that means something.”

That night as the Country Music Association handed out its Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, Cody felt a kinship to the honoree onstage.

“To be a guy that comes along and says, ‘I want to change country music for the better,'” Cody said, “I want 35 years from now to be that guy that’s sitting up on stage like George Strait, where they say, ‘He did something.’ And that’s it for me.”

Parmalee earns fifth No 1 on country radio with ‘Gonna Love You’

Parmalee earned their fifth No. 1 single at country radio with “Gonna Love You,” marking the quartet’s fourth consecutive No. 1 single. The group released the Gonna Love You EP in May, featuring six alternative versions of the song.

Parmalee shares in a statement: “Having ‘Gonna Love You’ go No. 1 is special in so many ways. We took a shot with a song completely different from the previous three (we released), and it really connected. Also, this was the song we needed to help tell our story and ultimately film the music video. As difficult as it was on the video set, it was a way to move on, and now we can all celebrate this song and how far we’ve come.”

Parmalee — comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas, Cousin Barry Knox, and lifelong friend Josh McSwain — are also prepping for their Fell In Love With A Cowgirl Tour, which kicks off February 13th in Madison, WI. The tour, featuring special guest Avery Anna, will conclude on March 22nd in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

See Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan in Shenandoah’s video for ‘Sunday in the South’

Shenandoah has released an updated version of their classic hit, “Sunday in the South,” featuring country superstars Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, accompanied by an official music video featuring all three artists. “Sunday in the South” ft. Aldean and Bryan follows Shenandoah’s new version of their smash hit “Two Dozen Roses” ft. Luke Combs, which reached No. 1 on several country charts and amassed over 20 million global streams.

Directed by Edde Brothers, the video with portions filmed at the Country Boy Restaurant in Leipers Fork, Tennessee. The clip also recaptures all the iconic landmarks in Muscle Shoals that were in the original music video, released 35 years ago.  Says Shenandoah frontman Marty Raybon: “Having Jason and Luke on this song has certainly been a highlight for us. This song has always ministered to us in such a special way.”

Bryan shared: “My earliest memories of ‘Sunday in the South’ is that it was a song that was speaking exactly my life. This song shaped the way I thought about music and how I wanted to make music one day.” Aldean added: “It’s just always an honor for us to get to work with these guys we grew up listening to.”

See Shawn Mendes’ video for ‘The Mountain’ off self-titled LP

Shawn Mendes has shared the live performance video for “The Mountain” taken off his fifth studio album, Shawn — his first new album since Wonder (2020).

The new video for The Mountain follows the release of “Nobody Knows,” “Why Why Why,” Heart of Gold’ and “Isn’t That Enough” from the 26-year-old’s self-titled album, which dropped November 15th. Mendes shared of his new LP: “This album is about letting go of, and remembering who I am. It’s been my own personal medicine. I hope you love it Shawn, out now 🫀

Mendes had previously dropped the video for “Heart of Gold”, written and produced by Mendes, Scott Harris, Mike Sabath and Eddie Benjamin, which was inspired by the memory of a dear childhood friend who passed away. Mendes shared of that track: “Grief is a really, really difficult thing to deal with and a huge part of what has helped me has been celebrating that person. I would just like to dedicate this song to anyone out there who has lost someone – some who has passed or someone who’s alive – whichever way. This is for them.”  The accompanying video for Heart of Gold was directed by Connor Brashier with creative direction by Anthony Wilson; take a look – HERE.
