Jennifer Nettles goes to 'Hell and Back' to make music with Kevin Bacon

These days, Jennifer Nettles has a new musical partner onscreen — and it’s none other than Kevin Bacon.

While she’s best known, of course, as half of Sugarland with Kristian Bush, her new musical partnership is a result of her acting, as she stars in Prime Video’s The Bondsman: Hell and Back

“Making Music is fun! Writing Music for tv is super fun!” she commented on her socials. “You enjoying both on #TheBondsman is the MOST fun!!!”

Jennifer plays Kevin’s estranged wife and musical collaborator on the series. In fact, there’s a whole streaming album from the show that includes originals, a duet on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and Jennifer’s cover of Linda Ronstadt‘s “When Will I Be Loved,” which is an Amazon Music Original.

She also recently revived her role as Aimee-Leigh in the final season of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO Max.

As for Sugarland, she and Kristian most recently worked together as they joined Little Big Town‘s 25th anniversary Take Me Home Tour last year.

Suspect in custody after mass shooting at Florida State University leaves two dead, six hospitalized

A suspect has been taken into police custody after a mass shooting on Thursday at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.   At least two people were confirmed dead, with six others hospitalized after police responded to a shooting on the campus of FSU.

Per ABC News, the suspect is identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner — a current FSU student and the son of a current Leon County sheriff’s deputy, according to Sheriff Walter McNeil. The suspect is said to have had access to one of his mother’s personal weapons, which was one of the weapons found at the scene. McNeil said that the suspect’s mother has been a deputy with the department for more than 18 years and “her service to this community has been exceptional,” adding that the suspect was also a “long-standing member” of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office’s Youth Advisory Council.

It appears that Ikner had a handgun and a shotgun with him when he allegedly opened fire near the Student Union at FSU, which prompted ambulances, fire trucks and patrol vehicles from multiple law enforcement agencies to respond after the university issued an active shooter alert midday Thursday. The university’s FSU Alert account on X said the report was made in the area of the student union: Police responded to an active shooter call from the area of the student union around 12:01 p.m., FSU said. The school’s alert warned those on campus to “seek shelter and await further instructions.” The university also cautioned students to lock and stay away from all doors and windows.

Police have not identified the two people killed, but said they were not students at FSU. Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare said it had received six patients, all currently listed in fair condition. The suspected shooter was also being treated at the hospital.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, “My heart breaks for the students, their families, and faculty at Florida State University. There is no place in American society for violence. Our entire nation is praying for the victims and their families.”

FSU informed students that the threat to the campus has been “neutralized” but the area around the campus is still considered an active crime scene.  Per CNN, the university is cancelling classes, business operations and athletic events after the campus shooting: “All classes and business operations are canceled through Friday, April 18. Essential employees should check with their supervisors for further reporting instructions. Athletics events in Tallahassee are canceled throughout the weekend.”

Supreme Court to hear arguments over Trump bid to limit birthright citizenship

The Supreme Court announced Thursday that it will hold oral arguments next month to consider whether the Trump administration can partially implement an executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship.

The birthright citizenship order seeks to limit automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are citizens or lawful permanent residents. Specifically, it excludes children born to undocumented mothers, those in the U.S. temporarily, or children whose fathers lack legal status or citizenship. Under the directive, federal agencies were instructed to stop recognizing U.S. citizenship for children born after February 19.

The high court scheduled the hearing for May 15 at 10 a.m., to hear the Justice Department’s request for emergency relief. These injunctions have so far prevented the federal government from implementing a new framework that would deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents without permanent legal status.

The administration is asking the Court to scale back three federal injunctions that currently prevent enforcement of President Trump’s order across the country.  If the Supreme Court grants the request, the administration would only be restricted from applying the executive order to a limited group: the individual plaintiffs, certain immigrant advocacy groups, and residents of 22 states.

The acting solicitor general wrote in the application to the Court “enough is enough,” urging the justices to limit the injunctions to the individual plaintiffs and specific group members involved in the case: “At the very least,” she added, “the Court should permit federal agencies to prepare and issue public guidance on the new policy.”

Opponents of the order have urged the Supreme Court to maintain the lower court rulings. Officials from 18 states, along with Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, argued in court filings that the administration’s request would effectively strip citizenship from potentially hundreds of thousands of children born in the U.S.

Dierks Bentley offers a guided tour of the 'Broken Branches' that inhabit Music City

If you want a glimpse of what life is like in Nashville’s music community, you might want to check out Dierks Bentley‘s upcoming 11th record.

“My new album, Broken Branches, is all about those broken branches that fall off the family tree. All the misfits that live here in Music City,” he explains. “And that was kind of the theme going throughout the whole album.”

“A lot of songs that kind of tie back into that, and kinda just small town life and religion,” he continues, “and just all the little pieces and parts that make somebody one of those broken branches.”

The follow-up to 2023’s Gravel & Gold includes collabs with Riley Green, Miranda Lambert and Country Music Hall of Famer John Anderson.

Dierks has so far released “Cold Beer Can” from the album, as well as his single “She Hates Me” and “Well Well Whiskey,” which is new.

Dierks kicks off his Broken Branches Tour with Zach Top May 29 in Austin, Texas, before the album drops June 13.

Kenny Chesney, June Carter Cash, producer-musician Tony Brown named 2025 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees

Kenny Chesney, June Carter Cash, and producer-musician Tony Brown have been named the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Country Music Association established the Country Music Hall of Fame as a way to recognize and honor individuals for their outstanding contributions to and impact on the advancement of country music.

Chesney will be inducted in the modern era artist category; while June Carter Cash will be inducted in the veteran’s era artist category; and Tony Brown will be inducted into the non-performer category (which rotates every three years with the songwriter and recording and/or touring musician categories).

The Nashville institution announced the trio of music icons as their 2025 inductees during a press conference in the Hall’s rotunda, where the plaques honoring the new class will be installed later this year during the Hall’s annual Medallion Ceremony.  Each year election process consists of nomination of candidates, which is done by committees and election of nominees, done by a voting body of several hundred anonymous professionals in the country music industry.

Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement: “This year’s inductees embody the relentless drive and dedication that defines Country Music. Kenny, June and Tony have each left a lasting imprint on the genre, shaping its history with their contributions. From a young age, each of them was immersed in music, and their lifelong commitment has led to this very moment. Their achievements speak to the passion and dedication that have defined their extraordinary careers, and the impact of their work will continue to inspire future generations. There’s something incredibly special about being able to surprise each inductee or their family with this recognition – it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of my job, knowing how deeply their careers have touched the lives of so many, including myself. It is with great pride that we honor these three remarkable individuals and celebrate the lasting legacy they have created within our format.”

Eric Church to release new album ‘Evangeline vs. The Machine’

Eric Church will release his new album, the eight-track Evangeline Vs. the Machine, on May 2 — marking Church’s first release since 2021’s Heart & Soul triple project.

Church said in a statement: “An album is a snapshot in time that lasts for all time. I believe in that time-tested tradition of making records that live and breathe as one piece of art — I think it’s important. I’ve always let creativity be the muse. It’s been a compass for me. The people that I look up to in my career and the kind of musicians I gravitate to never did what I thought they were going to do next — and I love them for it. I never want our fans to get an album and go, ‘Oh, that’s like Chief or that’s like this.’ Painstakingly, I lose sleep at night to try to make sure that whatever we do creatively, they go, ‘Wow, that’s not what I thought.’ I think that’s my job as an artist.”

The new album features a mix of tracks solely written by Church as well as collaborations, featuring Church’s co-writers Casey Beathard, Scooter Carusoe and Luke Laird.
