Mass shooting in Baltimore leaves 1 dead, 5 injured including 5-year-old girl

One man was killed and at least six people have been injured, including a 5-year-old girl, in a mass shooting in a Baltimore neighborhood over the weekend.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said  at a news conference that Northern District Officers responded to the 5100 block of Queensbury Avenue to investigate a call for a “reported shooting,” where they located six victims suffering from gunshot wounds,” the Baltimore Police said in a statement. The six victims included four males and two females, as well as the 5-year-old girl, who was shot in the hand. Worley said the child’s injury does not appear to be serious.

A 38-year-old man died from his injuries on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 10, police confirmed; a 23-year-old woman and three men aged 32, 33 and 52, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Worley said in a news conference: “Both our homicide and district detective units are on the scene. We have very little information at this point. All we know is there’s multiple rounds fired, multiple victims,” adding that it appears someone “opened fire” as a group of people were sitting outside eating crabs.

Police believe that the victims were possibly targeted in the shooting; however,  no details of any possible suspects have been released at this time. The Baltimore Police Department restricted access to the area amid their investigation, writing on X:  “BPD is scene of a mass shooting at the intersection of Spaulding & Queensbury Avenues. Multiple streets in the area are closed to the public. Please avoid the area. More information to follow as it becomes available.”

Police are asking anyone who has information about the incident to call Homicide Detectives at 410-396-2100. Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Those with information can also text tips through the Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland website.

Israeli PM Netanyahu defends military offensive, says starvation claims in Gaza are ‘exaggerated’

Speaking at a press briefing for international journalists in Jerusalem on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended plans for a military push into Gaza City, insisting that Israel “has no choice” but to see the fight through and ensure Hamas is completely defeated. Netanyahu declared:  “We will win this war, with or without the backing of others.”

Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s objective is not to occupy the territory permanently, but rather to “liberate Gaza.” He noted that there is a “relatively short timeline” for the next phase of operations. According to Netanyahu, Israel’s goals include stripping the enclave of weapons, keeping the Israeli military in control of overall security, and eventually handing administrative responsibilities to a civilian body that is not Israeli.

Netanyahu has come under intensifying pressure as his plan to seize Gaza City drew criticism from across the political spectrum and mass protests in Israeli cities, while Gaza’s Health Ministry reported rising malnutrition deaths. Netanyahu, however, denied claims of famine in Gaza, and acknowledged only “deprivation” – insisting Israel has “no choice” but to defeat Hamas, and stating that “hundreds of aid trucks” have entered the enclave. Netanyahu went on to place blame on Hamas for the dire humanitarian situation, including civilian casualties, widespread destruction, and limited access to aid. He claimed Hamas still has “thousands of armed fighters” in Gaza and said many Palestinians are “pleading” for liberation from the group’s control.

Netanyahu’s remarks came just two days after Israel’s Security Cabinet approved a plan authorizing the military to take control of Gaza City — a decision that has drawn sharp criticism both domestically and abroad. Opponents have warned it could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and place the hostages still held by Hamas since October 7, 2023, at greater risk.

The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session Sunday, with Britain, France, and Australia among those condemning the plan. The U.K.’s envoy warned it would “deepen the suffering” of Palestinians. The Gaza Health Ministry said five more people, including two children, died of malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the toll to 217, among them 100 children.

The Aussie candy Keith Urban can’t wait to taste when he gets back home

Keith Urban returns to his homeland this week, kicking off a 10-show stint Down Under Aug. 13 in Newcastle.

And just like any hometown boy, he’s hungry for the things he can only find in his native Australia.

But what’s his favorite?

“Awwwww, God, everything!” he reacts. “Everything in Australia is so good — the seafood, the steaks. Man, I mean, I take Vegemite on the bus like all the time, so that's not really the go-to.”

Then, the “Straight Line” hitmaker remembers his favorite candy.

Allen's Lollies! Any kind of Allen's Lollies is the way to go,” he decides.

Though he was actually born in New Zealand, Keith moved to Australia when he was only two.

Rattlesnake Preacher has been a staple of McBryde’s live shows for years and is finally being recorded in response to persistent fan demand.  Ashley shares: “‘Rattlesnake Preacher’ has been a staple in our live show since the bar days, and we’ve constantly been asked by fans when it’ll make it onto a record. As we were gearing up for my second year of co-hosting CMA Fest, it felt like the perfect time to finally get this one out there. It’s my way of saying thank you to the fans who have shown up, listened, and gave this song life long before it was ever recorded.”
