Forty-eight years ago today, a country legend released her 23rd solo album, Love Is the Foundation. It was a number-one Billboard Top Country album upon its release, and the title track topped the country radio charts, too. Can you name the singer who released it? ANSWER: Loretta Lynn.
When Dan + Shay‘s 2018 album came out, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney kept it simple: the cover’s nothing more than their name on a blank background.
Fast forward to Good Things, their new record out today. The pair’s gone all out, heading to California’s Joshua Tree for the photo shoot — even jumping in the water for what turned out to be the cover art.
“There was a swimming pool there,” Dan explains, “and it was 110 degrees out in the desert. We’re like, ‘Man, it would feel pretty good to go in that pool. Maybe we could get a picture while we’re in there. It might be the thing.'”
“You think about all these iconic album covers,” he reflects, “and they’re always just some random spur-of-the-moment, unplanned thing.”
“We dipped our toes in first,” he continues, “It was like, ‘What if we, like, put our jeans in?’ And then we just kept going in further. The photographer just jumped in, in his clothes… and he’s underwater shooting these photos.”
Sure enough, out of 11,000 shots, a pool photo turned out to be the one.
“It was just that magic moment,” Dan says. “We weren’t staged… we were just… laughing and having a good time.”
“We’re like, ‘How’s it look? Does it look sick? Is it anything?'” he recalls. “[The photographer] said ‘Honestly, man, I can’t see any of these photos. I’m underwater.'”
“It wasn’t until we got back to Nashville that we were able to see those,” Dan reveals. “And there was something magical about that unplanned moment… We were at peace… at ease. And I feel like there’s kinda that thread throughout the album.”
Good Things features the hits “10,000 Hours,” “I Should Probably Go to Bed,” and “Glad You Exist,” plus nine new tracks.

The pandemic for most is a hard way a of life, but some find that silver lining.. In an interview Dierk said “I wasn’t like literally jonesing (to play live) like maybe some people were,” , “I kind of saw an opportunity to re-balance my life in some way that would benefit me when live music did come back around. And that’s exactly what I did. I moved to Colorado and put the guitar in the closet and just was focusing on life adventures outside of the stage, and it was awesome.”… I say good for you!
Chris Young might be playing for sold-out amphitheaters and arenas these days, but like most musicians, he started out playing for tips. Now, the singer is remembering his humble beginnings, and paying it forward, with help from TikTok influencer and self-described “serial tipper” Lexy Lately.
On TikTok, Lexy routinely shares videos of herself surprising everyday people with massive tips, thanks to Venmo donations from her followers. This time, however, Chris tagged along to surprise some unsuspecting musicians in downtown Nashville.
First, Lexy dropped $1000 in the musicians' tip jar, explaining who she is and all the TikTok supporters that helped make the tip possible. Then, she gave the pair of an artists an even bigger surprise, inviting Chris out to meet them.
The singer matched Lexy's tip, and had some kind words for the two performers to boot.
“This is what it's all about right here in Nashville, and these guys sound absolutely amazing,” Chris told the crowd, encouraging them to stick around to listen to the musicians.
He also briefly took the stage, performing a bit of his latest number-one hit, “Famous Friends.” That song is also the title track of Chris' new album, which dropped earlier this month.
Brantley Gilbert is the next artist set to take the stage during season 10 of public television performance series Front and Center. His episode airs on August 15, and like the performances in the series, it'll take place from the stage of Analog at the Hutton Hotel in downtown Nashville.
That intimate venue is giving Brantley the chance to put a more toned-down and personal spin on his songs, many of which he's used to performing in the more uptempo, rowdy and full-throttle setting of an arena or an amphitheater.
For example, selections from his set list include songs inspired by his love story with his wife, such as “If You Want a Bad Boy” and “You Don't Know Her Like I Do.”
A handful of the songwriters who helped write some of Brantley's biggest hits will join him on the stage, such as Justin Weaver and Brett James, who helped write his chart-topping “Bottoms Up.”
“We had such a blast getting together with the guys and playing fan favorites with some of our own,” Brantley says of the taping. “It's not often you get to have all of your buddies and co-writers in one place to do something like this, and I can't wait for BG Nation to see what Front and Center' helped us cook up.”
The series runs through September 19. Episodes are distributed nationally by American Public Television; you can also watch them on “Front and Center”'sYouTube channel.
