Tim McGraw shares lessons learned on marriage, sobriety and parenthood: “Love is a 360 degree thing”

Tim McGraw shares a list of his biggest life lessons and humblest moments in a new Esquire interview, including the rock-bottom day when he turned to his wife and fellow country star Faith Hill to help him come to terms with his alcohol addiction.

“I remember a moment when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, ‘I have to wake the kids up,'” he recalls. “I went straight to my wife and said, ‘This is where I’m at.’ I was scared. She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life.”

Now, years later, the singer is sober and as resolutely committed to his family life as ever. He and Faith will co-star in a new Yellowstone prequel later in the fall, and one of his daughters, Audrey, recently starred in the music video for his song “7500 OBO.”

But still, the singer stresses that love isn’t easy and fairy tale-esque all the time. “Love is not talking for a day. Love is getting in each other’s face. Love is accepting that I’m wrong,” he muses. “Love is a 360 degree thing. It’s not linear.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Tim reflects on more things that he’s learned from his long marriage to his wife, from little things like the right way to set a table to big, heavy things like the inevitability of fighting in front of your children, no matter how much you try not to.

Kacey Musgraves' star-crossed album chronicles split from Ruston Kelly, but she started writing it pre-divorce

In a new interview with The New York TimesKacey Musgraves reflects on the timeline of making her new album, star-crossed. Structured as a three-act tragedy, the project revolves her summer 2020 divorce from fellow artist Ruston Kelly. But she began writing it before then.

Kacey reveals that the first track she wrote for the upcoming album was “Good Wife,” a meditation on the expectations that come with being in a relationship, which she created while she and her now-ex were still together.

Now, she explains, she sees the songs on the album as her way of discovering her feelings about her breakup in real time. Ruston hasn't heard the album yet, the singer tells the New York Times, which even includes some sentiments she hasn't worked through with him.

“People have come to know me as someone who really speaks my mind,” Kacey muses. “Why is it easier to tell an entire crowd of people what I think than someone who really knows me?”

Kacey will release star-crossed, along with an accompanying film, on September 10. When she announced the album, she dropped the title track, which is also the first song on the track list.

Granger Smith + wife Amber discuss faith and the devastating loss of their son on I Am Second

Granger Smith and his wife, Amber, are opening up about their harrowing journey through grief and faith in a new episode of Christian multi-media platform I Am Second.

In an 11-minute video, the couple share painful details about the June 2019 death of their three-year-old son, River, whom they lost in a tragic drowning accident at home. In the wake of that loss, both Granger and Amber say they leaned heavily on faith, as well as attending counseling sessions.

The couple are also parents to two other children, nine-year-old daughter London and seven-year-old son Lincoln. After River's death, Granger asked Amber if she would ever want to have another baby, and initially, she was adamant that she wouldn't. But as time passed, she warmed to the idea – though she wasn't sure it was a real possibility, as she'd had a tubal ligation procedure, thinking their family was complete. When a doctor suggested in vitro fertilization, Amber hesitated, worrying that undergoing such a procedure was tantamount to playing God.

At the same time, Granger remembered a conversation he'd had with Lincoln, after Lincoln asked whether God grows all trees or whether people grow some, too.

“I said, God makes all the trees, but sometimes man plants the seeds,'” Granger emotionally recalled. The couple ultimately came to a similar conclusion about their decision to do IVF.

“I looked at her and I said, God makes all the babies, but sometimes man needs to plant the seeds,'” he adds.

After much reflection and more ups and downs, including a miscarriage, the couple welcomed a baby boy named Maverick Beckham – whose name is a subtle tribute to River, including the letters “RIV” – on August 20.

“South on Ya”: Luke Combs drops his SEC anthem, uniting his love of music and college football

Luke Combs officially released “South on Ya,” his love song to life in the rural Southeast, this week. It's more than just an ode to the North Carolina native's home turf: The song will also be this year's brand anthem for the SEC Network.

That means that fans can hear Luke's song throughout live college football events and on-air programming this fall.

“Man, this is pretty special,” the singer notes. “In the beginning of my career, I spent a lot of my time playing my music all over towns within the SEC. The fact that one of my songs is now such a big part of the Network is really cool to me. It feels like a full-circle moment, for sure. I am a huge fan of the SEC and am honored my song was chosen to be a part of it.”

In the lyrics of “South on Ya,” Luke shouts out every included state, from “muddy Mississippi” and “swampy Louisiana” to “the grass in Kentucky” and “the blue skies in Carolina.”

On CMT Giants, Nashville's younger set – including Jimmie Allen and Mickey Guyton – tribute Charley Pride

Stars like Garth BrooksAlan Jackson and Darius Rucker stepped up to perform in honor of Charley Pride during the CMT Giants: Charley Pride tribute that aired on Wednesday night. But they weren't alone: Members of country music's younger generation, including Jimmie Allen and Mickey Guyton, were also on hand to remember Pride's enduring legacy.

Mickey kicked off the night with a rendition of Pride's 1971 hit, “I'm Just Me.” She also spoke to Pride's personal influence on her career as a Black Country artist, reflecting from the stage, “Charley Pride impacts almost every space I occupy as an artist as a person.”

For his part, Jimmie delivered an emotional performance of “All I Have to Offer You Is Me.” Jimmie's love and admiration for Pride is well-documented; in fact, it was Jimmie who shared the stage with the country legend during his final performance at the 2020 CMA Awards.

Luke Combs was on hand to perform “Kiss an Angel Good Morning,” Pride's signature hit. Joining him onstage were country up-and-comer Reyna Roberts and gospel pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph.

In case you missed the Wednesday night special, CMT Giants: Charley Pride will broadcast an encore performance on Sunday, August 29 at 12 p.m. ET on CMT.

Pride, who blazed trails as country music's first Black superstar, died in December 2020 of complications of COVID-19. He was 86 years old.
