The Year in Country 2021: Even with two CMAs, Kelsea Ballerini still hasn't had her “I've made it” moment

Kelsea Ballerini finishes the year with a top-ten duet with Kenny Chesney that could very well go on to become the stars’ next number one.

Along the way, she also picked up her very first CMA trophies, with “Half of My Hometown” winning for both Music Video and Musical Event of the Year.

“It’s my favorite song I’ve put out, you know,” she tells ABC Audio, “so just to have that song kinda get some love on it by my peers is a big deal. It’s also with my hometown hero. Like, there’s a lot of levels to it that make me feel really proud.”

Kelsea goes on: “When we got nominated, I FaceTimed Kenny, and we just kind of had that moment of like, ‘People like our song. Like, What a joy!’ You know, you make it because you like it, and we made it because we liked it. But to see people really kind of relating to it and catching on is exciting.”

Instead of focusing on career momentum, the East Tennessee native seems to view her success through the eyes of the Knoxville girl who dreamed these dreams.

“I still haven’t had the ‘I’ve made it’ moment, I hope I never do,” she confesses. “But yeah, there are certain moments that kinda make you look up and go, ‘Man, 12-year-old me would be losing her mind!'”

“And having a song with [Kenny] is certainly one of those,” she adds.

In addition to touring the country with pop superstars the Jonas Brothers this year, Kelsea also released her first book of poetry, Feel Your Way Through, in November.

Dior postpones Travis Scott collaboration ‘indefinitely’

Travis Scott has been dropped by the perfume company Dior. Dior announced that it has paused indefinitely a “capsule collection” collaboration between Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones, and Scott’s Cactus Jack label, which was due out next year. The partnership was to be Dior’s first with a musician.

Dior said in a statement, “Out of respect for everyone affected by the tragic events at Astroworld, Dior has decided to postpone indefinitely the launch of products from the Cactus Jack collaboration originally intended to be included in its summer 2022 collection.”

The indefinite Dior postponement is the second significant branding deal Scott has lost in a matter of weeks. Weeks ago, Anheuser-Busch announced it will no longer distribute Scott’s Cacti line of hard seltzers.  In addition, Epic Games has removed the “Travis Scott emote” from their massive online game, Fortnite; Parsons School of Design pulled out of their contract with Scott’s ‘Cactus Jack Design Center,’ and Nike postponed Air Max 1 x Cactus Jack collab. Scott has also been dropped from the 2022 Coachella lineup (which he was slated to headline).

“We're prepared”: Walker Hayes and family plan to make it to midnight on New Year's Eve

When it comes to New Year’s Eve celebrations, Walker Hayes‘ focus is on family.

Walker admits that he doesn’t follow food traditions such as eating black-eyed peas, which many people incorporate into their New Year’s Eve meal as a symbol of good luck. Instead, the hit singer opts for a “hearty” dish, adding that he’s often watching football and has a full house on the holiday with his wife Laney and their six children.

“Little football, for sure, a lot of good food. We don’t do the black-eyed peas thing, I’m not really big into vegetables, so usually a Rotel or something hearty,” he describes of their New Year’s rituals. “Just a lot of family time and doors are usually wide open, kids are always at my house.”

The “Fancy Like” singer asserts that he has every intention of staying up until midnight on New Years Eve. Seeing as his wife and their kids also make a habit out of staying up late, it’s likely they’ll be awake to ring in 2022.

“We got to make it to midnight. The older I get, the harder that is, but we always stay up late,” Walker says. “My family, we always go to sleep late and wake up late also, so we’re prepared.”

Walker will commemorate the new year with a performance on ABC’s annual special, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest, airing at 8 p.m. ET on December 31.

President Biden signs $770 billion defense bill

President Joe Biden signed a nearly $770 billion defense bill into law on Monday, which includes an overhaul on sex assault crimes prosecution. The National Defense Authorization Act for military appropriations in the 2022 fiscal year includes $740 billion for the Department of Defense, which is $25 billion more than Biden’s budget request. It also includes $27.8 billion for  Department of Energy defense-related activities and another $378 million for other defense-related activities.

The bill includes funding to change how the military prosecutes sexual assault cases, along with other items, such as military construction, basic pay increase for troops, national security programs and intelligence programs, a brief White House statement shows.

The bill also specifically includes a 2.7% pay raise for troops, an independent commission to review the two-decade war in Afghanistan. Biden said in a White House statement: “The Act provides vital benefits and enhances access to justice for military personnel and their families,” Biden also said in the statement that “unfortunately,” certain sections of the legislation continue to bar the use of funds to transfer Guantanamo Bay detainees into the United States or custody of certain foreign countries unless certain conditions are met. He added that these restrictions “constrain the flexibility of the executive branch with respect to its engagement in delicate negotiations with foreign countries over the potential transfer of detainees,” and urged Congress to eliminate the restrictions.

CDC cuts COVID-19 isolation guidance down to 5 days amid Omicron surge

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) announced on Monday that Americans who test positive for COVID-19 but do not have symptoms can stop isolating after five days as long as they continue wearing masks, cutting in half the agency’s previous isolation period down from 10 days.  The CDC also said it was loosening its guidance for quarantining after a COVID-19 exposure for unvaccinated Americans or those eligible for a booster who have not yet received their additional shot. It now recommends a five-day quarantine followed by five days of strict mask-wearing, but says that if quarantine “is not feasible,” it can be skipped as long as they wear a mask in the 10 days after exposure.

The CDC says people who are fully vaccinated and boosted do not need to quarantine after exposure. The agency had previously said all vaccinated Americans, regardless of whether they had received a booster shot, did not need to quarantine after a close contact as long as they did not have symptoms.

The change mirrors a similar move by the CDC announced last week to shorten its isolation guidance for health care workers. Many communities are now seeing record numbers of cases and rising hospitalizations fueled by the variant. Nationwide, the daily average of cases tallied by the CDC has accelerated to a pace not seen since the deadly surge of cases last winter.

Several industries have blamed the recent surge in Omicron cases for crippling much of their workforce. Thousands of flights were canceled or delayed over the holiday weekend, as pilots, flight attendants and other airline workers were forced to isolate after breakthrough cases. In deciding to shorten the recommended isolation period, the CDC said data shows the majority of transmission “occurs early in the course of illness,” within two days before symptoms begin and three days after. The CDC also cited recent data from South Africa and the United Kingdom, where Omicron has spread widely, showing a booster shot could restore vaccine effectiveness against infection.
