Authorities in California arrest man accused of killing child whose body was found at his home six months ago

Authorities in California have arrested the man accused of killing an 8-year-old girl whose body was found in his home six months ago. After a months-long search and an investigation involving the Department of Justice’s Special Operations Unit, police arrested Dhante Jackson in Newark, California, for the murder of Sophia Mason. According to a news release from the office of California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the girl’s body was found in Jackson’s Central Valley home in March a few days after her relatives reported her missing. The relatives told police they had not had contact with the girl since December, which led local police at the time to arrest Sophia’s mother, Samantha Johnson, on a warrant stemming from a child abuse case the previous year.

According to the news release from the Attorney General’s office, Johnson shared with investigators after her arrest the details of the abuse her daughter faced from Jackson before her death, which included “being forced to live in a shed in Jackson’s yard and suffering sexual and physical abuse. Jackson and Johnson had been in a romantic relationship. Court documents show that Merced police found Sophia’s body in a bathtub, inside a locked bathroom in Jackson’s home, after executing a search warrant on the property.

On Sunday, local police shared the grim news that Sophia had been dead for at least a month before she was found, and her death has been ruled a homicide by the Merced County coroner’s office. After finding Sophia’s body the Merced County District Attorney’s Office charged Johnson with child abuse and homicide for the child’s murder. Johnson has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

1 dead, multiple injured after motorboat flips in at Grand Canyon National Park

Officials confirm that one person died and multiple people were injured after a motorboat flipped over in Grand Canyon National Park. According to the park’s Twitter account, the incident took place at Bedrock Rapid on the Colorado River at 2:12 p.m. Saturday.  Emergency personnel were dispatched to treat and transport injured patients.

It was unclear how many people on the motorboat were injured and park officials didn’t immediately send any updates Sunday.  John Dillon, the executive director of the Grand Canyon River Outfitters Association that represents the outfitters permitted in the canyon, said the boat flipped on a technical rapid when it came up against a rock.

Bedrock Rapid features a large rock island that splits the channel left and right, creating difficulty for some rafters. According to GoRafting.com, “you can get into trouble here by failing to make the move around the rock island and flipping off this feature.”

From “Netflix and chill” to front porch hangs, Kane Brown + wife Katelyn prefer to stay in for date night

Kane Brown and his wife, Katelyn, are a busy power couple juggling Kane's demanding country music career with their home life raising two daughters together.

So when they get some time to themselves, they don't usually spend it on a fancy night out at a club or a party. In a new Q&A video that shows the couple playing Jenga and answering questions, Kane and Katelyn agree that their perfect date night involves staying in.

However, they might have slightly different thoughts about the specifics.

“Netflix and chill,” Kane says with a big grin, when asked about his go-to date night idea. And while Katelyn's on board with staying at home, she prefers different date night activities.

“I don't wanna go out for a date night. I like to stay home, and sitting on the front porch and, like, drinking wine,” she says.

In the video, the couple also answers several more questions about Kane's music and their life together, including sharing their daughter's first word: “Daddy.”

Kane and Katelyn are partners in life, but on Kane's new album, Different Man, they're also partners in the studio. The pair teamed up for a collaboration, called “Thank God,” which appears on the album’s track list.

Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson release new version of the 1980 classic song ‘9 to 5’

Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson have teamed up for a reimagined version of Parton’s iconic hit, “9 to 5.” The original version of “9 to 5” appears on Parton’s 1980’s album, 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs.  The remake of the 1980 classic, produced by Shane McAnally, first premiered last spring in the documentary Still Working 9 to 5, which reunited the cast of the original film: Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman.

Parton shared in a press release: “Nobody sings like Kelly Clarkson. She makes any song come alive  I love her voice on ‘9 to 5,’ and I am so proud I got to sing with her on it. I’m equally as proud of the wonderful arrangement and production by Shane McAnally.”

Clarkson added: “I am so honored that Dolly asked me to reimagine this iconic song, ‘9 to 5,’ with her! She is so talented, an inspiration to all women, and one of the sweetest people you will ever meet! I hope y’all like what we did, but even if you don’t, remember I got to sing a duet with the magical Dolly Parton, and now have bragging rights til the end of time!”

“9 to 5” was written by Parton for the iconic comedy film of the same name. The song and film owe their titles to 9to5, an organization founded in 1973 with the aim of bringing about fair pay and equal treatment for women in the workplace. The track went on to earn Parton an Academy Award nomination, four GRAMMY Award nominations as well as two GRAMMY Award wins for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Tyler Hubbard drops “Everybody Needs a Bar” video as he embarks on first tour as a solo act

This week, Tyler Hubbard embarked on his first tour as a solo artist with Keith Urban's The Speed of Now World Tour. To celebrate, he released a music video that encapsulates the come one, come all vibe he seeks to provide with his live show.

That video is for his song “Everybody Needs a Bar,” which appears on his six-track EP, Dancin' in the Country. The clip was filmed at the home of a Nashville, Tennessee, art director who built his garage into a bar.

“Making the video for Everybody Needs a Bar' was an amazing experience,” Tyler says. “Everybody should have a place — their own version of a bar — to go where they feel a sense of welcoming and belonging. I think we were able to create that vibe in this video.”

Plus, he's got a special relationship with the actors in the music video: Tyler hired them for another video set to come out next month, “Baby Gets Her Lovin’,” and the gang had so much fun that he invited them to stay for the “Everybody Needs a Bar” shoot.

“Having all these actors out with me for two videos made the process incredibly fun and I think in its own way told the story of the song,” the singer adds.

Meanwhile, “5 Foot 9” — Tyler's first single as a solo artist — is currently inside the Top 10 at country radio.

Kane Brown explains how “Pop's Last Name” honors his grandfather: “I had to write a song about him”

One of the most tender moments on Kane Brown's Different Man album comes in “Pop's Last Name,” a ballad that honors the grandfather who helped raise him.

“My pop's last name / Still feel his hand here on my shoulder / I still hear him say / You'll understand when you get older' / Today I couldn't be any more grateful, thankful or proud to say / I got my pop's last name,” Kane sings in the chorus of the song.

“He was my only father figure because my dad's been in prison since I was a child,” the singer explains in an appearance on Today's Country Radio With Kelleigh Bannen, adding that his granddad died last year.

“He was the guy that came and taught me baseball, you know, took me on drives,” he continues.

Kane's granddad took him to visit Civil War monuments in his home state of Georgia, a memory that the singer immortalizes in the lyrics of “Pop's Last Name.”

He also stood up for young Kane during difficult times, like when he was being abused by his stepfather. “When I was going through child abuse and stuff with my stepdad…I wasn't going to get to go to baseball practice one day, he came and took me out of the house and was like, He's coming with me,'” Kane recounts.

“[He] was just a big father figure,” he adds. “And so I had to write a song about him.”

“Pop's Last Name” is on the track list of Different Man, which arrived on Friday.
