Dan + Shay perform their hits and new songs on 'Today'

Dan + Shay took the Today Citi Concert Series stage on Friday, July 21, to perform and chat about their upcoming album, Bigger Houses.

During an interview, Dan Smyers spoke candidly about the struggles the duo faced earlier on and how working through them shaped their new record.

“Being in a duo is very difficult. It’s like a marriage. If you don’t go out of your way to work on it and nurture that relationship, things can fall apart. It’s something that we realized that we needed to spend more time focusing on,” Dan recalls.

“We sat down one night, hashed everything out and we made a goal. Moving forward, we want to spend a few days, at least, with each other,” he explains. “If we’re not on the road, get back in the room, write songs, let’s hang out like we did 10 years ago when we met because that’s where the magic was.”

“It was one of the most incredible few months of my entire life,” says Dan. “We accidentally wrote I think our best album of our career because of that and our relationship is stronger than it’s ever been.”

While on Today, Dan + Shay performed their chart-topping hits “Tequila” and “Speechless” as well as their new single, “Save Me The Trouble,” and “Bigger Houses.”

Bigger Houses is available for preorder and presave now.

Police probing link between accused NY serial killer and missing South Carolina woman

Police in South Carolina are probing a link between accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann and the disappearance of an 18-year-old woman who went missing in 2014. 18-year-old Aaliyah Bell disappeared two days before Thanksgiving 2014 after leaving her uncle’s home in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Police in Rock Hill, South Carolina said on Thursday that they were investigating whether the Long Island murder suspect is connected to the disappearance of Bell, who vanished just 20 miles away from a property Heuermann owns. Property records show that Heuermann also owns a timeshare in Las Vegas and a property in Chester, South Carolina — a 30-minute drive from Rock Hill — that he purchased in 2021 for $154,000. The property is fenced off and marked with a sign reading, “No Warrant, No Entry.” Police in Las Vegas have also been scouring their missing person records for ties to Heuermann.

Rock Hill Police Lt. Michael Chavis said in a statement: “Our investigators have been reviewing any information to see if there is a correlation between the disappearance of Aaliyah Bell and Rex Heuermann. So far there is no indication that leads us to identify Heuermann as a suspect in this case. We will continue to investigate Bell’s disappearance and follow up on all tips and leads.” Chavis added the department was “doing its due diligence” in trying to tie the cases together.

The 59-year-old Heuermann, an architect from Massapequa Park, is charged with murder in the deaths of three women whose remains were found in Gilgo Beach in 2010, and is the main suspect in a fourth slaying.

Senate Judiciary Committee advances Supreme Court ethics bill

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Thursday to advance legislation that would require the Supreme Court to adopt an ethics code. Called the ‘Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act,’ the bill from lead sponsor Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse cleared the committee along party lines, 11-10. It is not expected to get the 60 votes required to advance on the Senate floor, and if so, it is likely fail in the GOP-controlled House.

Democrats followed  through on their pledge for legislative action after a series of reports about Justice Clarence Thomas’ relationship with a Republican real estate magnate. A Pro Publica report revealed that Justice Clarence Thomas had accepted vacations and travel from a Republican mega donor; while Justice Samuel Alito has also faced criticism for alleged ethics violations.

Republicans introduced several amendments touching on the protests outside Supreme Court justices’ homes, the leak of the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, Supreme Court expansion and imposing new rules on reporters who cover the high court.

The legislation has backing from more than two dozen Senate Democrats, and would require the Supreme Court to adopt a code of conduct for the justices and implement procedures to handle complaints of judicial misconduct. It would also require the high court to impose more rigorous rules for the disclosure of gifts, travel and income received by the justices and their law clerks.

Riley Green on touring + collaborating with Luke Combs: “I'm such a big fan of him”

The opportunity to tour with Luke Combs and sing in stadiums is one Riley Green doesn’t take lightly.

“Stadium shows are great. It’s such a big deal to go out there and be in front of 50 [thousand], 60,000 people,” Riley tells ABC Audio. “[It’s] something I never thought I’d be doing, but it’s great to have my first stadium tour be with Luke since I’ve been such a big fan of him and have been for a long time.”

In fact, Riley’s admiration for Luke recently led to them jumping in the studio to rerecord Riley’s 2019 song “Different ‘Round Here” as a new duet.

“I mean, being on tour just made sense,” shares Riley. “I reached out and asked him about a song I had called ‘Different ‘Round Here’ that’s been such a big song for me, but it was never a single, it was never on radio. And fortunately, he wanted to be a part of it.”

“Different ‘Round Here” is Riley’s latest single on country radio, and is currently #34 and ascending the country charts.

Coming up, you can catch Riley and Luke at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 22. For tickets, visit Riley’s website.

Alana Springsteen teams up with Chris Stapleton on “ghost in my guitar”

Alana Springsteen has teamed up with Chris Stapleton for the track “ghost in my guitar,” featured on the second installment of Springsteen’s three-part debut album TWENTY SOMETHING: Figuring It Out. Stapleton is featured on guitar in Springsteen’s newest single.

Alana said in an Instagram post: “this song is about the things that haunt us… people who’s memory we can’t seem to shake no matter how hard we try. this duet needed to allude to the person who once was, which is why it couldn’t be a vocal. i had this insanely specific tone in my head for it and ended up seeing chris play his fender jazzmaster live for the first time right around the time i was cutting this song. i knew immediately that it had to be him. there was never a back up plan if he said no. thankfully chris is the kind of artist and musician who believes in the integrity of a song over anything else and i’m forever grateful that he liked this one enough to lend his iconic talent to it. …he asked what i had in mind and all i said was ‘think about what you would do with your voice and do it with your guitar instead’. he did.. and then some.”

Springsteen added: “One of the highlights of Figuring It Out is my collaboration with Chris Stapleton. This song is intentionally not a traditional vocal duet. I wanted it to be a duet between me and a lead guitar, so the guitar feature was crucial to this song. It represents the lingering presence of something (in my case, someone) who’s gone but also very much not. Every time I think I’ve written my way past the hurt, I’m reminded that I have a long way to go. The guitar had to be just as emotionally charged as a vocal would have been to hint at those lingering feelings and memories that just won’t let me be, and Chris’ signature guitar tone was the only one I ever heard on it in my head. I’m so grateful to him for liking this song enough to lend his insane talent to it. I’m honored to have him on this project.”

Shakira faces second tax probe in Spain over alleged fraud

Shakira is facing a second tax probe in Spain. According to Reuters, a Spanish court announced Thursday that Shakira will be the subject of an investigation over alleged fraud on income and wealth tax in 2018.

The Colombian singer was already involved in a different legal case in Spain, where she faces up to eight years in prison stemming from accusations of failing to pay $15 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014. Shakira rejected a plea bargain in the first case last summer, and says that her primary residence from 2012 to 2014 was in the Bahamas, while Spanish prosecutors point to the home she purchased in Barcelona in 2012. That case is set to go to trial later this year.

The new case was brought by a court located in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, which has not revealed how much money is involved. Shakira’s legal team confirmed that she has not been officially informed of this latest allegation, and only found out about it through reports in the media. Her attorney’s are waiting for legal notification at her official address in Miami, where she now resides. Shakira’s reps said in a statement: “As she has already affirmed on numerous occasions, Shakira defends having always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts. She is now focused on her life as an artist in Miami and is confident that there will be a favorable resolution of her tax issues.”

Ariana Grande dating ‘Wicked’ co-star Ethan Slater after split from husband

According to multiple sources, Ariana Grande is dating her “Wicked” co-star Ethan Slater amid her split from estranged husband Dalton Gomez.

TMZ broke the news that Grande and Slater, who is also reportedly separated from his wife, singer Lilly Jay, started dating several months ago after meeting on the set of the film. A photo of the ‘Wicked’ cast from March celebrating Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar win in London showed Grande sitting close to Slater with his arm wrapped around her. TMZ said that Slater and Grande got together after he already had separated from Jay, who married in 2018 and welcomed a son together last year. Grande reportedly separated from Gomez in January, after two years of marriage.

The 31-year-old Slater, who plays Boq in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical, rose to fame starring in “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.” The actor was nominated for a Tony Award for his role.

‘Wicked’ composer Stephen Schwartz said that filming has been paused due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with about 10 days of work to go. Director Jon M. Chu said the disruption shouldn’t affect the film’s November 2024 release date.
