Eric Church believes CMA Fest is what “makes country music unique”

Ask Eric Church what distinguishes country music from other genres, and he’ll tell you it’s CMA Fest.

“Well, I think it's what makes country music unique. Find me another format that happens in, it's just not something that happens,” Eric notes. “I think it's because country music is the one format where the fans.the music is really about them. And we're them; we're not different than them.”

“We're not a lot of the rock stars and a lot of the other guys where they're their own person, they're their own agenda.they're not like the people that are listening to them,” he explains. “It's different in country, we are. We come from there, we are that.”

“I think it's just a great thing for them to be able to come to our town and to get just this barrage of music,” adds the “Springsteen” hitmaker.

You can catch Eric’s performance of “Smoke a Little Smoke” and “Bad Mother Trucker” on CMA Fest this Wednesday, July 19, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Receiving Tracy Chapman‘s stamp of approval and congratulatory words has meant a lot to Luke Combs.

Miranda Lambert calls out fans for taking selfies during concert

Miranda Lambert has left fans divided after a recent incident at her Las Vegas residency.

During the show, Lambert paused her set to address a fan who was taking selfies instead of fully engaging in the live music experience.

In the TikTok video posted Sunday, the country singer stopped singing “Tin Man” to say, “I'm gonna stop right here for a second, I'm sorry. These girls are worried about their selfie and not listening to the song. It's pissing me off a little bit.”

“We're here to hear some country music tonight. I'm singing some country damn music,” she added.

While some attendees applauded her stance against excessive phone usage at concerts, others felt she overstepped by singling out an individual.

One person in the background of the video can be heard saying, “Let's go. You don't do that to fans.”

Lambert has not publicly addressed the incident.

New drug to protect infants from RSV receives FDA approval

The Food and Drug Administration (“FD”) announced Monday it has approved a drug by which newborns and infants can be protected against respiratory syncytial virus (“RSV”) for an entire season with a single shot. The RSV virus that causes acute respiratory infections and which can be quite serious for some infants, especially those born prematurely.

Nirsevimab – marketed under the brand name Beyfortus – received approval from FDA regulators following three clinical trials that regulators said proved the safety and the efficacy of the vaccine against RSV.  The vaccine’s makers, AstraZeneca and Sanofi, said Beyfortus will be available in the United States ahead of the upcoming 2023-24 RSV season following earlier approvals in the European Union, Britain and Canada.

Director of the FDA’s Office of Infectious Diseases, Dr. John Farley, said that the prevention of RSV will likely become much simpler and more effective with the development of the single-shot nirsevimab monoclonal antibody: “Today’s approval addresses the great need for products to help reduce the impact of RSV disease on children, families and the health care system.”  Immunization against RSV has mostly been reserved for premature infants deemed at highest risk for serious illness because shots needed to be administered each month throughout the five-month RSV season.

RSV typically starts in the fall and peaks during the winter months. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the virus is the leading cause of hospitalization among babies in the United States — approximately 1% to 3% of U.S. children under one year of age are hospitalized each year because of RSV.

Iowa judge blocks 6-week abortion restrictions, allowing legal abortion in state

On Monday, an Iowa judge temporarily blocked a new six-week abortion ban from remaining in effect. Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the ban into law on Friday at a prominent political gathering hosted by an evangelical Christian group. She told attendees that it represented “an ironclad commitment to the smallest and most vulnerable among us.”

Polk County District Court Judge Joseph Seidlin’s order means the law will remain on hold while the legal challenge plays out in the court system. Seidlin wrote: “The court will grant the temporary injunction requested here. In doing so, it recognizes that there are good, honorable and intelligent people — morally, politically and legally — on both sides of this upsetting societal and constitutional dilemma. Patience and perseverance are also hallmark traits on both sides, traits that continue to deserve respect. The court believes it must follow current Iowa Supreme Court precedent and preserve the status quo ante while this litigation.”

Gov Reynolds said in a statement Monday in response to the injunction: “The abortion industry’s attempt to thwart the will of Iowans and the voices of their elected representatives continues today, but I will fight this all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court where we expect a decision that will finally provide justice for the unborn.”

With the law blocked for the time being, abortion restrictions in the state will revert to the previous law, which allowed abortion until the 20th week of pregnancy. The new law includes exceptions for the life of the woman, miscarriages and fetal abnormalities deemed by a physician “incompatible with life,” as well as for pregnancies resulting from rape and incest. For those exceptions to apply, the rape must have been reported to law enforcement or a “public or private health agency” — which includes a family doctor — within 45 days, and the incest must have been reported to any of those officials or entities within 140 days.

Cody Johnson + Vince Gill preview their 'CMA Fest' collabs

With the annual CMA Fest television special coming up, fans can expect a slew of performances from some of country music’s biggest stars, but that’s not all. This year’s lineup also features multiple onstage collaborations, such as Cody Johnson and Reba McEntire‘s performance of her 1986 hit “Whoever’s In New England.”

“We’ve sang in the studio together when we recorded ‘Dear Rodeo,’ which was really incredible. That was the first time I had ever met Reba. And since then we’ve developed a really good working, professional relationship,” Cody tells the press backstage at CMA Fest.

“She’s the kind of person where if I need something, I can pick up the phone and she answers. And that’s a huge deal because she’s Reba and I am nowhere near that,” he notes. “Today in soundcheck was incredible. We’ve gone back and forth for six weeks about key and tempo and all the different things that we’re going to do for this song, and I think it wound up being perfect. Just she and I and the guitar.”

Reba isn’t the only ’90s country icon taking the stage this year. Luke Combs will be joined by Vince Gill for a duet of “One More Last Chance,” which Vince says will spotlight the “mutual admiration” they have for each other.

“I’m the first concert Luke ever went to as a 9-year-old boy. Fun to find that out,” Vince shares. “I’m a fan of his talent and he of mine. So it just makes for a great friendship. And when people really get on and like each other, I think all that can happen is something good.”

You can catch Cody, Reba, Vince, Gill and more of your favorite stars on CMA Fest this Wednesday, July 19, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
